I don't know. Mcallister said he was still recruiting for us. Not enough info.

Maybe it seems too obvious, but I think the only reason we got MacDonald was by promising him the OC position even though he had not previously had that kind of coaching responsibility.

We needed to promise him the OC position b/c what he really was/is is an uber-recruiter. Which is what we needed, at least in the eyes of the HC and/or AD.

Turns out he didn't grow into the role of OC, and now both he and we have soured on his role going forward. Leading to some of his recruits decommitting.

Yes, it's ending badly, but then the only thing that could have prevented it was the uber-recruiter demonstrating that he was more than an uber-recruiter. Turns out he wasn't.

Wasn't all bad, though. He is/was a pretty damned good recruiter.

no need to fire him, he will not come back anyway. but the way it was handled was horrible. as said previously he needed to remain with the title and lester "helping out" give him a new title and a raise as recruiting coordinator/director and wr coach. the only thing mcd will do now is hurt the team further with existing or potential recruits ---he is immature, but i have doubts about hcss as well at this point.

The way it was handled by McD was horrible. Going to the press with his dirty laundry. Good riddance.

...Turns out he didn't grow into the role of OC...
Do you think he was given enough time (and support) to grow into that role? One whole season (which ended with bowl victory) and 1/4th of the following season.

...but then the only thing that could have prevented it was the uber-recruiter demonstrating that he was more than an uber-recruiter. Turns out he wasn't...
And we know this conclusively based on what? He was relieved of his OC duties less than a year and a half on the job so I submit that he didn't have to time to clearly demonstrate what he was or what he wasn't. A developing coach that gets the ax 1/4th of the way through his SECOND season is still only a developing coach, albeit one who's suffered a setback in his desired trajectory.

I have to think that the demotion was never intended to be released/ think of the timing of what happened. First McDonald called the Press Conference and then HCSS did not even respond or say anything for nearly another day and a half. At that time he just confirmed what McDonald himself announced. HCSS was here when Marrone took over for Spencer behind closed doors, he knows how to keep things quiet. So many people criticize HCSS for sticking by his chosen coaches to the end. Why then would he then throw someone under the bus in public. Lastly isn't it at least curious as to McDonald saying that HCSS demoted him over the phone and it was not until days later that he clarified that in fact it actually was in person. HCSS never confirmed even this until another day later after McDonald set the record straight. As I put things together I think HCSS actually tried to keep it hush hush but it was McDonald that blew his cool. Just saying.

I know nothing about what went on behind closed doors.

That being said, if I had to gauge what I thought was logical based upon what I've learned about Scott Shafer and George McDonald over the past 2 years, my gut says that the demotion was communicated and meant to remain behind closed doors, McDonald reacted emotionally as he's done in the past (think back to some of the twitter exchanges he's had publicly) and lost his cool, and then started blabbing about it to anyone who would listen like a child throwing a temper tantrum. That is the scenario that makes the most sense to me based upon what I've observed over the past 2 years. McDonald has a track record of talking first and thinking second, and reacting emotionally.

Bad wording? Which word?

One last time GEORGE MCDONALD WAS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AT WESTERN MICHIGAN FOR TWO SEASONS.

Sorry for the yelling but I have seen too many people post things stating that McDonald had no previous experience as an offensive coordinator.

Terrible thread title...People need to not use that word so lightly as that effects many people in negative ways. Have more respect for your fellow posters.

Or people need to stop being so sensitive about WORDS. It's a completely acceptable use of the word cancer.

a practice or phenomenon perceived to be evil or destructive and hard to contain or eradicate.
"racism is a cancer sweeping across Europe"
synonyms: evil, blight, scourge, poison, canker, plague; archaicpestilence
"the cancer of slavery spread across the continent"

Maybe you should have a 4 year old daughter with Cancer and see how you like the word thrown around talking about something meaningless.

Phil-

I wish only the best for you and your daughter. No one so young should have to deal with such a horrible disease. It's a word. I'm sorry it hurts you to hear it but to blame others as being insensitive, is unreasonable. We'd have to cut out words from our dictionary like heart, car, beer, sugar, fat, smoke or smoking, sad, rope, knives, sleep... These are all reminders of the various causes of death.

I've had multiple, close family members die of cancer. Survival rates climb every year and early detection is increasing. Your daughter will be in our thoughts.

Don't support this thread subject heading at all.

So, is cancer the new r-etard (which gets blanked out apparently)? An every day word, with versatile usage, that can longer be uttered without public backlash?

The vast majority of people on this planet either have cancer, will have cancer, know somebody with cancer, or know somebody who has cancer. Trying to make the word offensive is selfish.

Bad wording? Which word?
Cancer. It is just not a word to be thrown about loosely. Has a horrific and very specific meaning to some of us. Lots of other words to use.

My mom died from lung cancer. My dad beat lymphoma. It's a word with many meanings.

Selfish? Not a bit - you can have the word and use it all you want. Just a question of some sensitivity but what the hell nobody gives a damn about that anymore. Go ahead -- have a ball.

I have to think that if McD hadn't said anything, his demotion would have been kept private.

He could have kept the titles, but Lester would be calling plays.

We knew about it before he was interviewed.

Thats WHY he was interviewed.
