I sit in Section 129 and witnessed a very nice gesture on Donovan’s part yesterday. There is a hawker who has been selling SU Game Programs for decades. He used to wear a SU #5 jersey but now wears a McNabb Eagles jersey. Some folks probably know who I am talking about.

Yesterday Donovan saw him and called him down to the rail at field level and chatted with him for several minutes. You could tell that this made the guys day and was a really nice touch by Donovan.

I know he has had some indiscretions and don’t excuse the bad behavior but that was a really nice thing to do.

Have seen the guy many times. Good job by #5.

Still think he is one of the best college players I have ever seen. Given all the warts those teams had defensively and on the OL, it makes his accomplishments even more impressive.

So many stories like this about Donovan. Of course the negatives dominate what is reported and the public persona outside of Syracuse but Donovan was raised right and truly values the people who support him.

Great story. Thanks for sharing.

Aside: I bought a program from Joe yesterday because I had a feeling this game would be special. Pretty young thing next to me asked if she could use it to fan herself— “Sure! Why not?” She left at halftime never to be seen again. My brother-in-law had a good laugh over it.

But I’d still like to have that program back...

Awesome! I feel like I see that guy at least once every game I go to no matter where I’m sitting and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without that McNabb jersey.

* One game during the national anthem he was out in the concourse screaming “PROGRAMS!!!” Some people were getting so pissed, they were turning and yelling at him to shut up, ironically making even more noise than he was. I found the whole thing hilarious.

My favorite play by McNabb in Orange is the defense of the 2 pt. conversion by VT, an incredible effort that should have drawn a penalty. All the better for the across the field throw that won the game at the end.

Anyone remember his last game in the dome where he went into the stands thanking everyone and signing autographs? That always stood out to me, classy!

a friend of mine coming in late from work passed him coming up the hill with DMAC going down at halftime.Said he had fans following him.

That must have been Joe. Great guy and he’s been doing it for years.

Middle-aged African-American guy with a mustache, right? Who holds up the programs with one arm screaming "PROGRAMS!" I feel like he's a Dome icon.

If I remember correctly, that guy always looked a bit like Wesley Snipes to me, when he (Joe) was younger.

Nice gesture but I've spoken to Joe several times about Donovan. He claims that they're close and talk all the time so if true, it wasn't a random thing.

100% correct. I see Joe at boxing matches at Turning Stone fairly often, I always make it a point to go over and say hi to him! He is, without a doubt, one of the constants of the Dome experience.

McNabb made my 4 years at Syracuse (how the did I end up with the best 4 year stretch possibly ever in SU football history) immensely enjoyable, and I will always appreciate and respect him for that.
