If a college player leaves early for the NBA when the potential is there, does it usually hinder them?

If a college player sticks around in college to take over the game/his team, does it usually help them get closer to their ceiling?

I guess what I am trying to ask is...
if a potential star leaves early can it hinder their chances of becoming a star and keep them further from their ceiling?

All injury thoughts fears and money aside...
Just getting the most out of their game what is your opinion?
