Means nothing now, but still ...

Was Neal down when he fumbled into the 5 yard line? I haven't seen any replays except at the Dome, where it appeared he was down before he lost control of the ball.

I thought it was as close as the Dungey fumble.

The two officiating/commentating mistakes that annoyed me were:

1. Dungey getting rocked late at the end of the 2Q while the ref watched the UNC defender take 2 steps to hit Eric after the ball was released.

2. The color guy saying Custis got away with a push-off when the UNC DB was giving just as good as he got. I'm sure Custis frequently pushes off (like Ishmael) but this particular play showed both players pushing pretty equally.

I agree with both of these. The no call on the Dungey hit was egregious - it is exactly the kind of thing they are trying to take out of the game.

The announcers - IMO - just completely misunderstood the Custis thing. The reason Custis got separation is because he slowed down at the end, allowing the ball to travel over his head where only Custis could grab it. Had Custis stayed at the same speed, it would have been a jump ball for both him and the defender. The defender was grabbing at Custis, and he was handfighting back to extricate himself to make the final lunge for the ball (having allowed it to travel over his shoulder). A offensive PI call there would have been terrible (unlike the OPI call on Butler, which was well earned in my view).

Regarding Neal - it was clearly a fumble. I went back and watched it last night. His knee actually hits the ball as he is carrying it loose, knocking it from his grasp. He grapples for it as he is going down, but he had clearly lost control of the ball well before he hit the ground. I didn't pay close attention to the recovery (i.e. whether it was properly called a touchback vs. being down inside the 1 yard line).

Since we're complaining about the officials... there was a play in the 1st half where Dungey was sacked, and the UNC player lead with his helmet, hitting him in the sternum (and maybe his chin). Dungey was clearly dazed afterwards. The announcers said something like "the officals might want to take a second look at that play. That could have been called targeting". Of course, they didn't.

the UNC guy pushed Dungey down with his hands as Dungey was backpedaling. It was several steps late, and it caused Dungey to fall backward and smack his head against the ground. It should have been a penalty, but it wasn't a situation where the UNC guy speared Dungey with his helmet.

The only ref-related weirdness I saw was when Neal ran into the field judge. That guy just stood there motionless for what seemed like forever as Neal barreled towards him. Move one foot over for christ's sake.

I am pretty sure they are not supposed to move. I could be wrong. It happens a lot. Ask my wife.

Agreed -- not sure what it takes to get a holding call anymore, given that this stuff gets let go every play.

Yeah, I recall reading that Clemson's DL only had 1 holding call against it at least up through our game. Doesn't seem possible.

I think if the guy is past you, you grab his jersey and pull him backwards, and to the ground, you will probably get a call. Otherwise.

I was amazed at how much they were letting the DB's get away with... There could have been a half a dozen PI's called... Yet I remember none...

He got destroyed, too.
I bet he felt that one on Sunday.

Look if you’re playing a Carolina team you gotta assume the spots will unfavorable to us all game. Most of them feature this “guy was close, why are they placing it there?” spots

I thought the officiating was fine...the broadcasters however were interesting.

So after UNC kicks the FG in the 2nd OT...our offense trots on the field. Everyone in the building is thinking “advantage SU”. Not the announcers.

The first thing out of the Raycom announcers mouth is “UNC can win this if they can force a Syracuse turnover.”

Seriously? That is announcing from the UNC perspective.

10 seconds later he catches himself and says “of course, Syracuse can also win if they can get it into the end zone.”

No shitake Sherlock.

Nobody ever has a perfect broadcast but I thought Dave Archer did a solid job. Didn't have a strong opinion on Werme. Guess I don't let stuff like this bother me.

I think a precious few on this board understand what it is like broadcasting a game, prepping for the better part of a week, then providing play-by-play (or color) for 3-4 hours, while attempting to have fun, remain neutral and not piss off one of the fan bases. Oh, and then there are the hundreds of fact that they have to share ... all done in real time. No do-overs. Even the best make mistakes every night.
