Melvin Gordon 408 yards, breaks FBS record of 406 yards by TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson

If that's true...pretty much sums up why we're where we are.

I agree that it is one of the reasons (that I didn't even remember). Wow, the Thompson brothers, and now this?

The game is hard enough already. Doesn't help to make it harder by turning away the Heisman candidates whom desparately want to come here. Frigging meatheads.

And to think this is the one player whom saw that awful Express movie, and wanted to come here b/c of it, and we turn him away? Wow. Not a good way to start a Sunday.

I watch teams like Missouri, Northwestern and even Minnesota and think what are we doing differently? How do we go from looking better than all three of them within the past 3 seasons to looking significantly worse?

What's the difference?

The players were there for us to compete and win before. Our recruiting supposedly picked up in that timeframe.

When you find out be sure to let us all know!

Yeah, but we got Tyree Smallwood instead. Oh, wait. :noidea:
Indeed.

When Orangeyes told Coach Wheatley about this RB out of Wisconsin with extraordinarily ability who wanted to come to SU, Tyrone told him, no thanks, we are set at RB in this class. We have Tyree Smallwood. Smallwood was small, slow, stupid and a criminal too. Never came close to enrolling here.

Nice call.

This is why I'm so disappointed. We beat Minnesota last year in our bowl game. We didn't lose that much talent yet they are trending up and we are going in the opposite direction. Injuries hurt us for sure but even before that we looked like crap. Our talent is much better, so all I can come up with is we are underachieving which is on the coaches.

Didja hear that Coach Kill is on the sideline?

I will say recruiting is a crapshoot. And there are a lot of programs around the country who have these types of stories.

That being said, taking Smallwood instead of Gordon without investigating anything further and simply saying "no thanks" isn't doing due diligence.

That is why the majority of his coaching staff is in the NFL. They didn't like/understand recruiting at the collegiate level.

Syracuse fans always over rate the talent. We have no NFL difference makers in the program. NONE!
Some people thought Hunt was a Heisman candidate. A good D-1 program that wants to use the forward pass would never recruit him as a QB.
The personnel stinks from a Power 5 perspective.
Its a miracle these guys are competitive.

Who knows what kind of talent Smallwood had he never played right? Couldn't clear academics?

AAM was in that class too. As was Broyld and Smallwood as athletes and potential RBs.

I don't disagree but I was comparing this years talent to last years

Our friend Ish Wittier had a pretty good game for Missouri yesterday as well.

Melvin Gordon just ran Bo Pelini out of Lincoln. It seems insane to think an 8-2 team would consider firing a coach but after that performance and outcome I just can't see Nebraska keeping him if they were strongly considering firing him during this past offseason.
There's no way Pelini gets fired unless he curses out more boosters and loses out.

100% fact. What a shame. He would've truly been the next #44.
We've been snakebit with a few of these (Ray Rice, Brian Leonard + Greene to Rutgirls, Gordon to Wisky) Two potential "44's" and all four NFL players.

At some point, the coaches need to start listening to the fans' sales leads. ;)

By Get a Life are you saying because the guy who said that refused to believe college football was worth investing money into (while all our competitors were), or are you just saying it's because he said Get a Life so people are still mad about that.

Please say the former.

Please?

Ha...the former. You've been here long enough to know. :)

44cuse

couldnt clear academics then went ahead and got arrested

Curious if AAM would have had some good numbers if he went to Wisconsin instead of SU. In this SU system who even knows if they would have even have used Gordon correctly and the Badgers may have had the perfect system for him to flourish. A qb like Wilson would do well for Wisconsin as well.

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon, a 2014 Heisman contender, once visited Syracuse football (PS: Axe)

This is the story of how Heisman candidate Melvin Gordon had boots on the ground at Syracuse University, but never spoke with a member of the coaching staff that day or was seriously pursued by SU until it was too late...
