Mets 2019 Season Thread

I've been trying to figure out our rotation. This is what I've got so far this year:

DeGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Matz, Vargas
DeGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Wheeler, DeGrom
Syndergaard, Matz, Wheeler, Vargas, DeGrom
Syndergaard, Matz Wheeler, Vargas, Flexen

I know DeGroms in the injured list for the moment and Flexen had to fill in. How did DeGrom go from the top of the rotation to the bottom? How did Matz and Wheeler switch places?

The switched Matz and Wheeler because Matz and Vargas were killing the pen back to back days so wanted to spread them out.

They skipped a Vargas start I think at one point so deGrom could pitch on 5 days rest cuz of an off day.

You mean something Calloway did actually made sense?

Hard to fathom how things have turned out this poorly. Between the pitching and defense, they'll be out of it by mid May. If this means Callaway gets fired, screw it.

The ERAs of key Mets pitchers, last year and this through 21 games (13% of the season):

DeGrom- from 1.70 to 3.68
Syndergaard- from 3.03 to 5.90
Wheeler- from 3.31 to 6.35
Matz- from 3.97 to 4.96
Vargas- from 5.77 to 9.58
Gsellman- from 4.28 to 2.77
Lugo- from 2.66 to 5.68
Familia- from 3.13 to 5.59
Diaz- from 1.96 to 1.17

It's early but I don't like the trend.

I thought Mickey was a pitcher’s coach?

Reality tho... pitchers gotta pitch. Callaway can only be blamed for so much.

This is also on Brodie... why sign Lowrie when pitching is such a major need. We all knew it going into the season, how did he not see it?

If the guys I noted had last year's ERA's our pitching would be just fine and we wouldn't be discussing this.

Going into the season counting on 30-35 starts from your 1-4 guys is criminal. Counting on 30 starts from Vargas that aren't slop fests is criminal. But yet, they sat on their hands and did nothing. I would think if the Yankees release Gio the Mets will give him a long look.

This team isn't going anywhere unless the pitching improves.

They built up all this position player depth (good! that's good!!) and totally sat on their hands and did nothing to add starting pitching. Very weird

Last night was what the 2019 Mets are supposed to look like: a quality start supported by 5 runs and then three shut-out innings by the bullpen. if we can get that consistently, we'll be tough to beat. We have not been tough to beat so far.

if the 5 man rotation and the top four relievers perform as they should, I don't think it matters who fills out the rest of the staff. I like the old days when teams carried 10 pitchers, (with a four man rotation, the fifth guy being long relief and a spot starter), had 8 position starters and a bench with 7 guys on it. You could carry three catchers, have a pinch hitting specialist plus a couple of back-up infielders and out-fielders. the over-use of the pitching staff in recent years, (the number of pitchers used), has eliminated real depth in the roster.

need G and Lugo to be consistent, get Famillia to mostly consistent and the get to the closer.. really wish they had 1 more arm they trusted... its gonna be tough if they cant get 6 most nights from the starter and Degrom not being DeGrom will not end well..

the lack of a 5th starter and having all the starters struggle to get thru 5 is adding up.. Noah needs to figure it out

When Lowrie comes back I think they will have to move smith/frazier/Davis. I move Frazier, but if Davis has options maybe they can send him down and stash him for awhile? smith might have options too?

Dont know what happens if Cespedes comes back healthy but they will need to move another body too.

Mcneil needs to hit. this team is set up for DH for the first time in forever..

I don't know what the story is, but outside of DeGrom, this generation of Mets pitchers really struggles to pitch to contact. They get ahead in counts and rather getting the batter to hit the ball for an out, they try to get cute and try to get him to strike out. This then leads to a ton of foul ball, high pitch counts and more walks. Again, outside of DeGrom, this generation of pitchers also seems pretty bad at getting themselves out of trouble, maybe because they don't like to pitch to contact and induce ground balls? Once a guy gets on base they seem to lose concentration which leads to a loss in control. Noah is the prime example of this... with his stuff he is unhittable but he tries to be too fine and strike people out instead of just getting people out. This leads to short outings...

Anyways... they definitely will need a bullpen arm and a rotation arm at some point this season if they are going to stay in contention. It would be nice if Cano didn't decide to apparently fall of the cliff this year also.

The problem with that, as I see it, it is 2 fold

1) Vargas is awful.
2) No one uses the same 5 starters all year. Attrition is inevitable.

If the top 4 guys in the rotation combine for somewhere in the vicinity of 120 starts, it still may not matter, those 120 starts may be good enough to cover for the 42 bad ones. But thats very unlikely

This night was also what the 2019 Mets are supposed to look like. We'll see what tomorrow looks like.

the rest of the month will tell us for sure what we have. 16 games against the phillies, braves, brewers & cardinals.
last night's win puts them at 6-6 with 4 to play ...

The fact they continue to start Vargas every 5th day shows you the owners are not willing to try and field a championship caliber team.

Part of me doesn't want the Mets to win a World Series if the Wilpons are still in charge.

I hate Vargas - he hasn't been the issue his last two starts
