Miami Postgame Thoughts

Just back from the game and post game celebration beers/food.

My general takeaways:

I thought Red coached great down the stretch. I continue to see him get more comfortable. The Cuffe/Bell switch was great. But he also thought he called a couple of smart clear outs for Judah towards the end. Very encouraging. Can’t judge him in the blowout loses when the team is overmatched.

What is up with Benny’s shot?!?! It looks like his freshman season all of a sudden. Is his hand hurt.

The basket looks like the size of the Atlantic Ocean for JJ right now. Ride it as long as we can.

If Taylor’s not making shots, he’s not giving us anything on the court. If he doesn’t come out on fire, Q needs to be inserted asap.

What a shot by Q. Obviously not our first choice to take a game winner, but so happy for him. He plays hard and has no fear.

Gotta say that Judahs numbers tonight shocked me. Knew he boarded well, but the assists snuck up on me.

I thought Bell played well. He’s just too slow laterally to be an effective defender. You have to live with the poor pct shots because he hits them often.

Brown is just so steady. Too bad he doesn’t play above the rim. We need a guy to erase the penetration mistakes

Great atmosphere there today. It’s the kind of win that will generate water cooler talk and get more people to the games going forward. The games at home have been very pedestrian up until today…this one moves the needle.

Win the games we’re supposed to, pick off Clemson at home and a game at the ACC tournament and I’ll tune into selection Sunday.

I'm very impressed with Judah for trusting his teammates and giving the ball up at the end. 9 times out of 10 he takes an off-balance jumper in that situation.

Well, to be fair, Judah did dribble into traffic and had nowhere to go, and tossed it in Q's general direction. Good thing Q is 6-6 or else that pass was going out of bounds. Q only had about a second to catch the ball, come down, and set his feet. Quite a finish for Mr. Copeland.

The biggest thing I noticed. I watched the last play quite a bit before and after. In the timeout all 4 assistants HUDDLED TOGETHER to discuss the play they were going to run. That says a lot about them trusting each other.

Second, 9-0 at home for first time in 10 years. LFG
That happens every game and just about every timeout.

no close game summary is complete without mentioning free throws were 15-5 . i know for a fact we'd all feel jobbed if that script was flipped.

Last game against Pitt he was making silky smooth jumpers, today we're back to square one. It's so bizarre.

So much of shooting is muscle memory, but Benny apparently has amnesia in that regard.
Benny’s brain trumps his muscle memory.

I don’t have any evidence off hand, but Benny seems to flatten his shot when he’s going off the dribble or not within the offense and pressing.

He’ll elevate well, but then he’ll scissor his legs and then he just flattens the shot.

I think there is a lot of emotion with Benny. I think when he’s locked in and seeing good things happen, he can execute. I think he gets loose when things may be amiss.

Think Bells issue is more about strength and agressiveness

I've seen traffic cones that play better perimeter defense than Chris Bell. It almost costed us the game. He should be embarrassed by how they were hunting him on that end.

With a guard. They played all guards.

He stays low, but he doesn’t use his lower half to ward off the offensive player. He needs more strength.
It was not a matter of strength, he got beat off the dribble. Why, when you see his on the break dunks there is no question about his foot speed. It is just a lack of concentration on his defensive assignment IMHO.

With his stroke he can be a good player, but he needs to round off his game. Get stronger and get more focused on things other than his shot.

well they were missing some key dudes. shot 49% from the floor. 35%deep. not too bad.
And they still lost. Cry me a river.

I was disappointed in Autry's plan in the first half. Norchad was out and we had them in early foul trouble but just kept chucking instead of trying to create quality looks. We attempted more threes than twos in the first half. Maybe they were going off-script but even if that were the case it's Red's job to get them back online. Still don't like the zone looks on OOB plays and didn't love seeing Cleveland slash us to shreds.

He did a much better job in the second half, especially not panicking through Miami's run. I feel like Maliq-Benny D/Bell O-Quadir-JJ-Judah is as good of a winning time lineup as we have and they brought it home. As I mentioned earlier I thought the final play was a good call and well-executed.

Larranaga's a really, really good coach. He knew exactly what he wanted his guys to do especially when Maliq had to take a seat and they went out and did it. For Autry to get the last word speaks pretty well of him, IMO.

Why isn’t this game on demand???
I don’t know. It was on ESPN2 so it should be. I’ve been looking for it all afternoon but can’t find it.
