Michael Carter-Williams has done some eye-opening things in his limited minutes.

In about half as many minutes as Brandon Triche, Michael has 15 defensive rebounds to Triche's 11.

(And we tend to think of Triche as a good rebounder because he's a big guard, but about half of Brandon's rebounds so far have been offensive boards.)

Michael's 15 defensive rebounds, in fact, compare favorably to his much larger classmate, Rakeem Christmas, who only has 2 more than Michael, in about equal minutes played.

When it comes to assists, of course he had the one game with 8 that inflated his statistics, but he has 28 assists in about half the minutes of Triche and Dion; they have 35 and 34, respectively. And we think they've been doing a fairly decent job sharing the ball so far, compared to last year.

Now, compare Michael to Scoop, who also has about double his minutes, and Scoop's got 44 assists so far on the year. Not bad for the part-time minutes he's been playing, averaging 4 a game; down from last year's 5.9, but he isn't playing that many minutes yet.

On a minute for minute basis, Michael would be averaging about 25% more assists per minute than Scoop, on par with how Scoop did last year (which happened to lead the league).

His turnovers per minute are slightly less than Triche and Dion, and noticeably better than Scoop, by about 50% fewer per minute played. Michael, although he has looked a bit shaky a couple times with his handle in the first couple games, is arguably our best ball handler and distributor to this point.

He is also 4th on the team in blocked shots (!), with 50% more than C.J. or Kris (again, in half or less than half the minutes), and twice as many as fellow guards Dion and Triche (again, in half the minutes). His steals per minute are right up there with Scoop, although a bit behind Dion.

(Southerland is really doing an outstanding job with the steals, too, which makes up a bit for his lack of rebounding so far...)

Anyway, long post to say that the numbers indicate that when Scoop passes through at the end of the year, Carter-Williams ought to be ready to handle more minutes. He's doing remarkably well for a freshman point guard so far, although it probably helps him a lot to have 3 experienced guys to pass it to, if he gets too much pressure.

He's gonna be a star next year. If Dion stays (small chance but still), our back-court will be be a dream - basically NBA size and quality. Also if Dion stays I see Triche being Scooped next year (starts but plays small minutes).

MCW is genetically engineered to play at the top of the Syracuse zone. The fit is so perfect, and like you guys said offensively he's gonna be special. I love his attitude so far too.

I like MCW, don't get me wrong...but aren't his stats going to be a little inflated due to the level of competition he's playing against? If he's not logging minutes against the UF and NC States on the schedule, his numbers are bound to be higher on a per-minute basis.

I don't think JB does that to Triche, he will give him his chance to shine. Can't do that with Scoop b/c Scoop routinely makes bad decisions and basically forces JB to take him off the floor.

I agree. I think Michael will be the third guard. Brandon will be our most experienced guy. I'm wondering how that's going to work out. In one sense, he's a poor man's Derek Jeter for us; doing all the fundamental things really well; plays with that stoicism, seldom shows emotion; "just do it". Not a vocal guy, though, so it's hard to say if he will be our "leader" next year in that sense.

Absolutely. But he has looked pretty darn good at times, and he's fortunate to be learning slowly rather than crushed in Rakeem's situation.

As someone who still feels a bit nauseous thinking about David Patrick subbing in for Lazarus Sims in the national championship game, I think it's really cool that Boeheim has a #4 option like Williams.

I think MCW is going to be very very good next year.

If MCW is at SU for 4 years I think he may push at Sherm's assist mark even if Dion stays and MCW does not start next year. Its the way he dribbles, looks and sees the floor. I like how he is anticipating how things will develope and where players will be. With his length he should be great at feeding the post a skill we will need to be better at to use Coleman. His rebounding and defense is rediculous and perfectly fit for our system, could easily see him being the best defensive gaurd ever in the 2-3.

I like MCW as well, but I noticed you ommited scroing numbers and percentages from the analysis. They would not shine the same favorable light. There is allot of work to be done there.

I think Michael will be a star too in time. But it can be a stretch right now to make "per minute" assumptions of what he would do with starter's minutes based on what he has done with very limited minutes. The sample size is too small to simply extrapolate this out. With that said, he should dominate when in a larger role. Add the ability to score and that will open things up even more for great passes and assists. Would love to see MCW and DW in backcourt next year.

I won't blame the thread for cherry-picking stats...because there's a lot to like about MCW. The first thing I notice is his size. He moves and handles (after a few early jitters) like a shorter player, but he has the height to see over the defense and the instincts to make the right pass at the right time. I love his 'Jeremy Lamb' floater as well .. he's not afraid to take the ball to the rack. (We can thank DW for showing him how to be aggressive).

Next season, I think MCW logs major minutes (20+) backing up Dion and BT. His offense needs seasoning, but this will come with minutes and confidence. Defensively, he's very smart and knows where to be, but he's not quite as quick laterally (or as strong) as Dion and Triche. Look for this to improve next year, along with his outside stroke. He will improve even more on defense as he gains strength.

The future is bright. Having veteren guys (DW and BT) backed up by MCW and Cooney... gives us another year of quality depth and firepower at the guard position.
