Wow, harsh! I just don't see what the hatred is about. He's a good reporter, has great insights, and is responsive to readers comments. I see a bunch of folks saying that he's too young to be taken seriously, which is just stupid. I don't care that much, just seems odd...
That's just it. He isn't a great reporter. How can one be a great reporter a year out of college. Will he be? I don't know. All I know is that he isn't one now. Junior has a lot to learn.

There's the disconnect. I don't think he's a good reporter at all. He's a hack that wants attention right now. He frequently takes a negative slant when it's not needed. He comes off as a reporter who covers another school that plays SU. With that said, he does give us a lot of articles so his volume is exceptional. He needs to better understand that the people who want to read about SU are SU fans.

I'm not looking to get into a big debate - I just don't care that much, but for you to say "How can one be a great reporter a year out of college" is kinda silly IMO. Anyway, there are more important things to discuss I suppose...

If Cohen's work even approached "greatness" it would have been recognize while he wrote for the DO and some better gigs than writing for the PS/Syracuse.com would have surfaced.

When the kid sticks to the story itself and doesn't interject his slants, labels and opinions, he does a good job. The Flemming article today is good. When he provides much-wanted info. on recruits, it's good.

That is all it is about volume. The other day while he and his cohorts produced volumes of little blurbs on the Allen/Hunt decision and Shafers' thoughts on Allens' first game I found this one AP story that said it all in one article. Now I am just wondering who is this AP writer.

Not quite sure why there is so much hatred towards this kid. I like his reporting, and find him to be well spoken. Guess I'm in the minority...

He has an incredibly negative bias. His articles often lack any knowledge of the game of football. I personally like how he tries grading recently committed recruits, or posts as fact that a certain recruit will be changing positions as SU. He has already gotten into it publically with McDonald and has been shut off from any insider team activity.

What he needs to do is study Dave Rahme's past work/philosophy. Dave was a gifted writer who lacked bias and was able to secure quality info from previous coaches out of built-up trust and repoire with them. He also understood the game of football, which helps when writing about it.

Cohen is a kid with alot to learn.

Whoa there. I never said anything about greatness. I guess it's all subjective, but I enjoy his stuff so far. Go SU!

You did say he "had great insights". You're definitely in the minority on that opinion.

You guys are brutal. Okay, he sucks donkey crap. Happy?

Easy, Michael. Hate is a strong word. Dislike would be a better word.

I fully agree and I think the kid has potential once he lets go of the premise that he needs to be controversially opinionated to be good. Honestly, most of us just want information. We love to hear about things, stats, quotes etc. that we are normally not privy to. We are SU fans and crave real information. We don't need or want his categorization of what "tier" SU is in or what grade he wants to give a recruit he's probably never seen play a single game.

I have been very negative on this guy and I do think he's pretty smug and annoying - but lots of writers are those things. I've come to the conclusion that Cohen is being used by his employers. He's definitely the attack dog, and now they have Bud urging restraint when judging the team. It's actually pretty funny. The problem is that the kid is not a bad writer and the post standard will literally ruin his career with the stuff they have him doing. He's not good either, but he is serviceable to decent with a lot of upside - which is not something you can say about most 22 year olds today who's idea of writing an essay is a test message that requires more than one 'send'. You don't get to the NY times with unsubstantiated provocation pieces. You end up on the waste heap of sports blogosphere. I mean maybe it's his goal to be a blogger, but I don't think so - I think he wants to be Pete Thamel. Hopefully he realizes before it's too late that his employer is using him in a way that is detrimental to his professional future. Some of the more recent work tells me that either he realizes this or his employer realizes that they need to tone it down - not sure which.

I really wish Cohen were a member of this board. I can imagine a black hole of dark commentary forming immediately upon his arrival.

Why would a UConn fan be a member here? I can imagine him reading comments here and then posting how mean we are in the Boneyard.

You really think he's not a member here? At the very least he reads it regularly...probably doesn't comment.

If he is a member than maybe he should take note on how people are responding to his style. I don't read his stuff and don't really care one way or another. I don't care to read negatively spun things.

The young thing is irrelevant. Whether he's 12 or 72, with the role he has there is a certain level of responsibility that is required and that transcends age.

He has a tendency to pull things into his reports that show "the other side of the coin" as I like to call it, perhaps to try to give the reader the impression that he is impartial. Often these tidbits are not well researched and thrown in for their surface value. A great example is the article that he wrote on Corey Cooper not qualifying then tossing in towards the end that he had been previously committed to Louisville to create doubt in the reader on Corey ever coming to SU. He did an interview with Corey where he gained quotes for the article, felt the need to mention the Louisville thing, but never bothered to ask Corey about what happened with Louisville to get his side of it. That I consider to be lazy reporting at best, at worst it's manipulating facts to lead the reader into a conclusion that you want them to come to and personally I don't care for that. That's just one example and he's done it in other articles, his "zingers" he tends to feel the need to throw in.

Also, getting back to responsibility, the whole situation with him posting rumors on twitter about AJ Long was completely irresponsible, and regardless of who he was posting that to or for what purpose, it's a public forum and he needs to respect that and act with some level or restraint unless his info is rock solid. Even if it is, posting stuff like that is not going to endear him to the staff or help him get access to the program - something I definitely want from a beat reporter. I don't want someone with limited access because they can't grasp when it's appropriate to put a filter on. This isn't CNN. He's not reporting on political corruption.

His writing ability is fine (to me that's not the issue), his reporting is questionable at best, he's irresponsible, and his tone is that of someone who is incredibly arrogant and smug. The criticism has more to do than just with writing ability.

His goal is to present a point of view that frequently agitates people. That way, he's always talked about and he becomes relevant. It's less work and less time consuming than developing relationships with the staff/team and requires less work.

I doubt he really intends to develop a long relationship with Syracuse and SU sports. He's a young who wants to put in his time and then move on to bigger things.
