Michigan is now 10-1 to win the national title, trailing only Ohio State, Baylor and LSU.

What? How is Harbaugh in CFB and not in the NFL? I mean this team sucked since 2010 and they have been mediocre since Lloyd Carr retired. I mean the fact Michigan has those odds are insane and just show how important coaching is in FB.
If Michigan beats Michigan State and Ohio State both of which are at home this year they really could make the CFB playoff. They lost on the road at Utah in a tough game.

Shows what a great coach can accomplish. Michigan is going to be a monster again. And sooner than we all thought.

Look at what the guy at Florida is doing as well.

And Dykes at Cal.

We've got the fastest track on the eastern seaboard. And a lot of very young talent. Maybe Shafer's the guy. Unlikely though. The next guy up (having faith in Coyle) will have a lot to work with.

I still think the team gets to 6-6 and Shafer survives. But maybe that's not the best thing for the future?

They look like the best team in the B1G right now. Massive turnaround in less than a year. Harbaugh is one hell of a coach.

He also inherited amazing recruits and stud athletes. I am not questioning his coaching ability because it is clearly excellent, but he is not doing that if he came to Syracuse last year. It was a perfect setup for him to come in and dominate right from the start IMO.

Also, CuseCactus, why is Shafer "unlikely" our guy? Due to the USF outcome? This board is on a seriously emotional rollercoaster this year. This season is long from over.

Do you think they are having second thoughts at all about opening the coffers and paying Harbaugh $$$$ ?

Go big or go home.

Diaco? What?
He's started his head coaching career with "garbage" and has been competitive in every single game. 3 point loss to a SEC team, held BYU to 30 points in a night game at the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, and they never looked embarrassed against the Cougars. I would bet money that our coaching staff would have been blown out on national TV even will far better athletes...

People were really down on them for losing to Utah week 1. They are all of the sudden the favorites in the PAC12 so UM's loss to them now looks extremely excusable

Please. They’re 3-3. No moral victories in losing to BYU 30-13

They get South Florida at home otherwise I’d say USF wins easily. USF is bipolar and will probably play like crap in cold weather and lose. But make no mistake Uconn is terrible.

That Saved by the Bell cameo "cool factor" will only carry Harbaugh so far with recruits these days :)

100% correct. The NFL it's all about the players. In College it's all about the head coach!!

I agree with this and think we should offer any "great" candidate a blank check. But would they even come here for a massive amount of money?

Let me preface this with the following - I 1000% hope Shafer gets it done. Nice guy. Like the rah rah, etc. Seems to be recruiting better players.

But, let's step away from our mutual love for Syracuse football and look objectively at what's happened so far.

Near term - the team just lost by 3 touchdowns to a 1-3 USF from a non P5 conference. And there are no excuses this time re injuries. Erv was back. Dungey was back. Ish was back. This was coming off of a bye week. USF had no bye week to prepare for Syracuse. That's a fail, any way you look at it.

Longer term - Shafer is now 13-17. He inherited an 8-5 squad. Yes there have been injuries. MAYBE the "cupboard was bare" when Marrone left. But his record is not, by any measure, impressive. There have also been a lot of questionable decisions/actions along the way that wouldn't give an objective viewer much comfort in his management. (I won't repeat all the various criticisms - from coaching choices to gameday management.) We'll see if it gets better - really hope so. The team offensively and defensively ranks in the bottom quartile. And ranked in the bottom quartile last year. It does look like things are getting considerably better under Lester - while at the same time regressing considerably under Bullough.

The future - Virginia is an 8.5 point favorite. They are 1-4. I believe Syracuse will win this game - but an 8.5 underdog to Virginia? Really?

I agree Rocco, the season is far from over. Before Saturday's game, I was in the 7-5, 8-4 club. Very hard to imagine that now with Virginia as the easiest game left on the schedule - at least on paper. All of which gets me to my point - so far, by just about any measurement you can find, Syracuse football has been below average, under Shafer. And what we are likely looking at this year is maybe a 6-6 or 5-7 record.

So, yes. I am frustrated. Every year another program seems to lap us. While we toil in obscurity. The USF game looked to me like a reversion to the mean with Shafer.

Here's to a win a VA. And then maybe a surprise upset over Clemmy or FSU. And a couple of other wins sprinkled in. Getting the team somehow to 7-5. I would love nothing more. But looking at history - I'm not holding my breath.

Brady Hoke and Rich Rod say "hi".
They both had the same players and did nothing, yet Harbaugh strolls in and 5 games into the season they look like a different team.
Talent means diddly if it isn't coached up.
I'm a HCSS fan and hope he's here a long time- but we need to see some tangible results...and blowout losses to the likes of USF are not very encouraging.

My post was more about that he is not doing that at Syracuse this year like he is currently doing at Michigan. Overall talent level is a different world between the two teams.

So is the competition. We can't even compete with middling AAC teams or middle of the pack ACC teams. Wake is our b***h though so I guess that's cool. Michigan is beating the souls out of good teams. So is McElwain at Florida pre Grier suspension. Yea, they have better talent (although people here would make you think Shafer is a recruiting god) but they also play and beat much better teams.

The rhetoric is over the top. Not one poster has claimed that Shafer "is a recruiting god," just that he is clearly bringing in better talent than several of his predecesors.

Well clearly, it was meant to be over the top.

I think that has more to do with being in the ACC than Shafer.

...and the facilities, and having a better group of ACs who excel at recruiting.

I don't think anybody has expressed that it is all about Shafer, just that the results are improved. I know things seem gloomy after Saturday, but the young skilled talent plus the starters on BOTH sides of the ball we return [7-8 on both sides of the ball] plus a very solid incoming class is exciting to think about.

The season isn't over yet. Bowl eligibility is still attainable, especially if we TCB on Saturday.

As a Bay Area person, I first noticed Harbaugh when he took over a crappy Stanford team and turned them into a top 10 team his first year (helps to have A Luck), but the guy did a great job. 4 years later, he takes over a mediocre 49er team and takes them to the NFC championship game 3? times in a row. Hated to see him go to Michigan. The guy would be worth 2-3 games a year to Syracuse just on his coaching ability.

Harbaugh was 4-8 his first year and 5-7 his second year at Stanford, I'm pretty sure they were not ranked in the top ten in either his first or second season there. With that said he is still an amazing coach.
