Might as well say it now - the inevitable front runner attendance criticism

And the people who religiously planned their days around watching Cuse on TV all of sudden won’t mind not watching - a complete afterthought. The deterioration of support will be crazy
This team has accomplished something no other Orange team has ever done in the decades I’ve been watching on tv.

I fell asleep during the game…sometime I think around the 8 minute mark of the second half.
Yes…this team put me to sleep.

I'm going to Bucknell game on 12/28. My 5 and 7 year old have talked about wanting to go. My 7 year old really wanted to get back after I took him to the UConn football game. He was mad he wasnt going to Miami the following week. Tix were reasonable, school break and taking my dad, so 3 generations attending together.

I will not boo Red or the team. I may yell something to JW if I see him in the concourse.

When attendance tanks, there will be all kinds of talk about how spoiled us fans are and how they're front runners

When really people have been incredibly supportive, leading the country in attendance with a small population and terrible weather for trudging up a hill after work on a weekday

Can't blame anyone for taking a break, it's just that everyone will take their break at the same time. It's not some petulant or permanent problem, it was long overdue

Childhood goes by so fast, really wish my kids had as much fun watching su basketball as me
Well the way the fans treated JB after the lifes work he gave to this program and sport it's only fitting the thankless fans get to bask in the crap after that man is gone.

Most of us are very grateful for the first 40 years. But he was being paid really good money to be the coach for 47 years and didn't leave the program in good shape like a good leader does.

Look in reality, JB was only part of the reason
for the program becoming great. The opening of the Dome, the new Big East Conference, players wanted to come and play on National TV before 29,000 fans.
The fans were as much a part of the greatness as anyone.

Have a great time! Your kids will love it and you’ll have a lifetime memory.

I went to a bunch of games in my youth when the Pats and Sox were terrible. What I remember is spending time with the family that took me.

Plus, the guy was treated like a God. Put aside the internet and talk radio crazies (of which I am one), and the vast majority of people cheered Boeheim til the day he hung it up.

The idea that “the fans” weren’t grateful is sheer insanity.

If you want sports to be a business, expect the customer to treat it the same. Who repeatedly pays hard earned money for a subpar product of any other kind or devotes limited time resources to a leisure activity that isn't enjoyable?

He wasn't doing charity work for orphins or building hospitals in third world countries. He made a crap ton of money to coach a sport. He did it well for a long time. But when he no longer held himself to the standard he established or put forth the effort his competition did, he deserved criticism.

People voice their opinions with their wallets.

Its not only their wallets (which is no doubt true).

They also voice their opinions with their time -- people have varying alternatives, various teams they like, and Syracuse may be falling down the ladder in terms of choices over the years. Perhaps the day trip this year goes to something else rather than Orange basketball. Or if the Knicks are on a Saturday night, and the Orange on a Saturday noon, you decide to do things during the day which you would have never done before.

I'd say the latter (losing people's attention to other alternatives) is perhaps more dangerous, because it takes time to get it back.

Also... the hoops team raked in cash on ticket sales for decades while JB was on a very, very friendly contract. It was an extremely unique situation financially.

And that cash cow got milked, and realistically, probably didn't get the full investment it could have because it helped compensate for lean years on the football side.

Autry should be happy that he's in a awful ACC. If we were in the SEC or B1G I feel like we'd only get 2-5 wins in conference.
I don't see how you can assume we will do better than that as it is. I cannot see us winning a single road game. home games will be either dog fights or well be heavy dogs.

Agreed, now that he is gone my take on Jim, is he stayed on too long and criticism for that is fair game. At the same time, I will say he deserves a statue outside of the JMA for those 40 and some change years.

I live in the Austin, Texas area and my eyes lit up when I saw Syracuse was playing SMU in Dallas on March 4. I haven't seen a Syracuse game live in many years and started making plans to get to the game. Now I'm wavering on whether I want to spend money on a hotel room, gas, food, and tickets to the game to see this underperforming team play. Sad.

It will still be a fun trip. Just keep expectations low. Plus the SMU campus and surrounding area are really nice.

Fans vote with their wallets and time. They don't owe the program anything. Everyone has their own breaking points and they're all valid. Telling people how to spend their hard-earned money and limited time is a surefire way to never get them to your side.

Win and bring people stories they'll care about and the fans will come back, to whatever extent they've been lost.

This year's team would be like going to the same pizza place over and over again, even though they hock a big old loogie in the middle of your slice while handing it to you... every time.

I watched about 4 minutes yesterday, made a post about it being unwatchable and went on with my day. It’s the feeling of indifference that is kind of scary for me.

I was driving for the entire duration of the game. Never once flipped it on. Didn't even look for it. Listened to Penn State-SMU early on, then flipped to Chiefs-Texans and some stand up comedy on Sirius. The occasional Axe text was providing some updates, but nothing good.

I've had moments where my SU hoops interest level has waned considerably, but nothing quite like this.

Thankfully my Maryland alum wife felt so bad she never even mentioned the game. Christmas season pity I suppose.

This will pass and we'll be all in like it never happened

The sabres, now that might permanently be over but you were smart enough but to choose them

We all might pass and people will act like we never happened at the rate our program is going.
