Mike Hopkins hired by New Orleans Pelicans

Yup. So much less time to actually gameplan/coach. You not only have to recruit high school kids, but you now also have to recruit the transfer portal and basically recruit your own players back every year. It has to be beyond exhausting.

Not to mention the fiasco of dealing with all of the new age/borne pimps players pitching their one night stand commitment and ensuing goods to the highest $$$ entity/bidder.

Hop is unquestionably one of the most gracious human beings out there. He visited a friend of mine, a huge SU hoops fan, in the hospital when he was dying of cancer. He spent well over an hour with him just shooting the bull. He brought all kinds of SU swag and autographed goodies. My friend died about a week later, and at the wake his casket was covered with all the stuff Hop had brought to him. His wife said she had never seen him so happy when it was just he and Hop talking about anything and everything. Hop was in the hospital at night, away from his family, and spending his time cheering up a stranger who just loved SU Basketball. I have never had the chance to thank Mike in person for that gesture, although I spoke to him many times before that time when my son attended his basketball academy. He is a gem of a person and someone I wish nothing but the best in life. Thanks, Hop.

Like ADs with coaches?

It seems most have a personal Hop story. Hop was the guest speaker at my HS's end of year sports banquet my sophomore year. He golfed before and clearly enjoyed a few drinks. He was lubed up pretty good and very entertaining and funny when he spoke.
This is 3rd hand, but Wayne Morgan allegedly say that Hopkins was the blackest white guy he ever met.

This seems awesome for Hop. Getting out of the college grind is not necessarily a bad thing. Good money, less stress, and coaching the best players in the world

Coach P has been bouncing around the NFL as a position coach the past 10 years. Maybe Hop can stick around the NBA for a awhile too

Why? He has proven he is not a great coach, even with great talent.
Most new coaches need time to figure out how to win, and even years in, winning isn’t easy. Over the past 10 to 15 years, the great experienced Coach K and Coach Calipari have assembled some of the greatest talent year after year and fell very short in the tournament.

The several years of coaching at Washington, assistant coach on an NBA team, and now as head of player development for the Pelicans, should help him if he decides to coach at the collegiate level again.

Unlike the “family” guys who have returned to SU in some capacity, Hop would be coming back with a wealth of experience, something we have not had and most on this board have moaned about. Jason Hart is the only former SU player with somewhat comparable credentials.

My guy is ready.

History says that us Polyanna thinking. The HCFB experience should embolden everyone to be open to the reality that we are far more likely to find a great coach in the greater coaching universe than from the limited coaches with SU pedigrees.

I agree in principle, going outside the Syracuse coaching tree is not a bad idea. At least a national search should be done if they fire Red.

On the other hand, the major lesson I take away from the the Fran Brown hire is that there is no upper limit to the effect that a truly magnetic recruiter can have on a program.

Hopkins had an outsized effect on Syracuse recruiting when he was an assistant here. With the open transfer portal and NIL, his ability to connect with people is magnified...

Hopkins can charm high school recruits, donors and transfers alike. He might be even more invigorating to the program in the new era than he would have been as a direct successor to JB.

Having NBA and previous P4 head coaching experience is kind of a cherry on top of the sundae sort of thing... The real prize is his ability to recruit in all areas.

"Hopkins can charm high school recruits, donors and transfers alike."
right ! despite washing out on his only attempt at HC. but no worries ,
he'll negotiate that "ASST." title to "HCIW" cuz we all know that's a real thing.

Former Cuse assistant Troy Weaver is having input in New Orleans. Unfortunately, he might go down as one of the worst NBA execs of this century. Not hyperbole. The Athletic had a rather insightful/damning article on his track record and more than questionable moves.

Hop will be in The Big Easy for less than a year. Not his fault.
