Hypothetical... Hop, Red, or someone else in 2025-26?

To answer your three questions:

1) Yes, I'd consider it after proper vetting. If he really wanted it, I'd consider it.
2) He has the ties, the name recognition, the accomplishments. He was the on court coach ("The General", a nickname he earned) for multiple NCAA championship contending teams. He broke the NCAA record for career assists. He knows the X's and O's. He knows how to motivate a team.
3) Carolina Blue. Enjoy the tundra.
Autry was the "general" of a few Syracuse teams also... so what?

I can't tell you how happy I am that you are not the SUAD.

Can we just come to grips with the reality that Jim Boeheim's coaching tree is the saddest tree one can imagine?

Well, he does get credit for Rick Pitino, right?

Who seems to have done pretty OK for himself, for the most part.

If one year of working with JB is responsible for Rick Pitino's success... Autry should be able to coach 10 teams at once and have them all in the top 25.

Pitino was at SU for 2 seasons.
I guess JB's coaching prowess peaked before 1980... because the rest of his tree is pretty meager.

Brendan Malone was 17-39 for Rhode Island and 29-71 in the NBA.

Hopkins went 4-5 on a Syracuse team that went to the Final Four, before being a .500ish coach at Washington.

Orr was 201-201 in his career.

Ralph Willard was here for one year, before embarking on his career.

Tim Welsh was a bit longer and better.

Wayne Morgan had some minor success.

Who are we missing?

While this is true one interesting thing about Sherm is this:

My daughter was watching Houswives of DC and I was walking by and said "Hey, that's Sherm!.". She says "You know who Sherm is?". Yep, our Sherm was one of the boyfriends or husbands on the show. My daughter said he was one of the nicer guys on it and really liked him.

So AZO...some of the younger generation do know who Sherm is!
Because she correlated him with you from being a Syracuse fan and im sure they said who he was and what he’s done in his past on that show. Otherwise 99 out of 100 younger generation people have no idea who he was. After all that was a lifetime ago and we are now trash.

Technically Rick is a branch of the JB tree but we all know JB/Rick was not a mentor/apprentice relationship like Jedis and siths. Just like JB served as an assistant under K in the Olympics folks do not consider JB as part of the K tree.

I think the difference is JB did not groom and prepare his assistants to replace him, he just use them for certain tasks, I don't know if that's fair but be that's my observation from 30,000 miles up.

It wasn't just being out on the west coast that Hop struggled. He's not a good bench coach. Same situation we're in now.
I would be okay with giving Hop a chance, but only if he had Bouie and Coleman on the staff to coach the bigs. And Devo, too. Devo would need to be on the staff to teach these kids how to play with intensity.

The next great coach anywhere is out there to be found. It’s up to JW to do it.
I would think JE might get calls similar to the one he got from HCFB if it was known the job was open.

I'd agree giving JB credit...credit for hiring him that is. Rick was JB's first hire as a head coach, and he, as a greenhorn himself, was just learning the ropes so to speak. Rick's stint at SU was very short in just being 2 seasons. So, again, with JB figuring out himself what type of coaching style, system he'd run, etc. and learning on the job. By the time JB figured anything out, Pitino was long gone by then.

Moreover, over the years, I haven't heard Rick mention in any interviews, articles, etc. of JB having influence on him relative to his coaching style, tactics, etc. Rick has mentioned other individuals whom had the greatest impact on his coaching, etc., but not JB, regardless of their long enduring friendship.

Sad, yeah. Saddest? Not close. There are some legends across multiple sports who produced absolute turds out of their assistants. Assistants being atrocious head coaches after serving under incredible head coaches is practically the norm.

Agree. I would argue Boeheim's coaching tree is better than Calhoun or the beloved Jay Wright. have a look if interested. Hoe does get credit for Pitino, as Rick has even said those two years at a big time program vs his Hawaii experience totally shaped his career.

I can see why with Pitino - his teams represented everything that JB's didn't. Tough, aggressive and committed to man D.

I remember people here saying Pikiel is good and would be a great replacement at UConn if Hurley failed. He’s barely over .500.

This year was supposed to be their can't miss year to at least make the tourney... and they are missing. I admit I was one of those who thought Pikiel was a good coach, although didn't tout him for the SU job.
