Mink notes on today's practice...

I was afraid that Wayne was going to be a non factor because of conditioning. He has a long time to go until the season starts i really hope he takes this seriously and uses the next few months to get himself in shape. It just seems like such a waste. There is a glaring need at the position, and if this season is lost due to conditioning, he will basically only have 1 year to produce, and that's if he can get into shape.

Come on Wayne don't waste your talent.

Riley Dixon's backup is Riley Dixon. Hodgkinson is doing some punting, but Syracuse is looking to add another punter before August.

Smart.

My gut instinct is that Wayne Williams wants to be a beast on the field and he will follow the lead of the strength and conditioning coach. WW has a ways to go, so by fall I expect that he will be in good enough shape to be a productive player off the bench, contributing in every game. His senior year watch out, BEAST mode in full effect!

  2. Shafer said the offense is often practicing faster than it would be allowed to in a game. Said it's been a smooth adjustment.

  2. Shafer said punter Riley Dixon's backup is Riley. Walk-on Alex Hodgkinson or "the Brit" as Shafer calls him is starting to take reps.
  1. Shafer said Ron Thompson nearly made an "unbelievable" diving interception on Sunday dropping back in coverage.

  2. Defensive line coach Tim Daoust on the DT rotation: "It’s really been by committee. We’re playing a lot of guys in there."

Hodge is doing some good work at middle linebacker. "He's got a natural vision to the football that you can't teach." - Shafer

All defensive ends have been getting reps inside, but Robinson, Thompson and Johnson look like three best options right now to build depth.

Provo is considered a tweener (FB/TE). He's practicing with TEs &s taff thinks he could develop into traditional H-back role down the road.

Mitch Kimble "threw it around today and he looked good out there." Kimble is still being limited in practice, Shafer said.

Shafer reiterated Gulley is best pass protector among RBs. Morris and Ameen-Moore are running hard. Adonis needs to cut a few pounds.

I love seeing that Thompson has a lot of potential because there was a lingering thought of mine about his potential at tight end. A game-breaking DE means more than a game-breaking TE so I cannot knock the move. I love hearing some news about practices.

The more I read about the offense - the more amped I'm getting for game 1. If Estime and Funderburke (or Ashton or a frosh) can really get in sync with THunt, and they start speeding up the play calls - could be a breakthrough year on O.

The few reports we're getting out of camp all say THunt is looking great... Can't wait.

I would like to hear how Sloan is doing

I hope they are designing some plays in which Estime has Broyld set up as a blocker who would target the first likely defender to have a shot at the speedster. Broyld turning into an exceptional downfield blocker, could make Estime a home run threat every time out.

That used to drive me batcrap crazy when they had Clark block for those. It seems like this offense is getting some pretty sweet options out there.

I'd have to think that Thompson would have the best hands out there of any of those Dlinemen. Should really be solid as a dropback DL as well and hungry to catch a ball and take it to the house to show off his offensive skills!

Love these updates. Have a really good feeling about this group, if it stays healthy and a couple key incoming freshmen can contribute.

AAM is like what, a 12th year senior now? Feels like he's been here forever. Here's hoping his career ends on a high note.

And thanks, fellas, for the updates.

One more spring note. How impressive has Hunt looked so far in spring. One assistant, hesitant to compare, mentioned UCLA's Brett Hundley.

"I think (Hunt) has that potential. He’s a little bigger framed, but there’s a lot of potential for that quarterback."
