I noticed that the Northeast Conference (which includes Bryant) has arranged their conference schedule this way (in lieu of the usual home-and-away format). I assume it is intended to limit exposure associated with travel, and it also saves money during a season where there are no paying fans in the stands.

They were in the area and available. Minnesota needed a replacement for North Dakota State, who dropped out of a game with Minny due to COVID.

The Gophers men's basketball team has to play Loyola Marymount twice to replace NDSU as part of their MTE on Saturday and Monday at the Barn. COVID-19 state restrictions prevented second game with different opponent within a three-day span.

Yep that's what the Mountain West is doing also. It makes sense to me.
