Misdirection was the hallmark of the option attacks run by McPherson, Graves and McNabb.

Whether it was the option-reverse or just a series of jab steps or a reverse pivot by the QB or even the TE throw back.

It was done to offset aggressive run defenses and to offset any talent deficit on the OL.

Can someone on this board who understands the Xs and Os tell me why we see no misdirection in the McDonald Offense?

Thank you.

I miss the old Toss sweep.. we killed some teams with that. Is it a function of formation out of the shotgun?

They worked on some option plays this fall. Haven't seen it yet.

They ran one inside zone to Gulley last week where he cut back against backside and it went for 10+ if I'm not mistaken. Haven't seen much of that this year.

Isn't the zone read supposed to have misdirection built into it when the QB sidesteps with the RB while holding the ball in his gut and reading the defense, then deciding to pull it out and take it if they dive down on the RB or give it if they don't?

Not necessarily option football - misdirection football.

I have seen none of it under this OC or under Hackett or Marrone for that matter.

It seems that teams have loaded up on the run against us this year.

It seems that that over aggression can be and should be addressed with misdirection.

You've missed it. I charted the entire CMU game and just about every play had a run pass option, with fakes/playaction going the opposite direction. Every time Hunt pump faked it was to an outside screen and or underneath pattern and then a handoff on the RB dive or a deep throw.

By definition the zone read is misdirection. Either the play goes up the gut in with the RB or Hunt pulls it out and runs the opposite way. We gashed CMU by Hunt keeping and gashed MD by giving it to the RB.

This is what we should do more of, IMO.

I agree-saw a bunch of fake screens in the CMU game, but haven't it seen it much in other games.

I really, truly miss the freeze-option offense. Why can't we go back to that? Why can't we recruit a QB who can run it? That offense didn't hurt McNabb's chances of playing in the NFL.

It's been replaced by the bubble screen.

I have seen the RB take a quick step in the opposite direction on certain plays, but not sure they really sell it.

I love the jet sweep out of the read option. TE on one side, trip WRs on the other. RB lines up on TE side. Bring WR across and quick snap once he gets to the Tackle. Jet sweep, TE responsibility is to quick pop OLB and either knock him into the CB, or to try to peel and get a quick hand on CB coming across. If you have a good TE blocking, boom, whole side is open.

Alternative would be to only go 2 WR's one side, TE/WR on the other and same scenario. If the WR gets a good block, could be a huge play.

Percy Harvin eats these for lunch. only problem is that I don't know if we have a WR (maybe Erv) who is fast enough to run it. Estime is supposed to be freaky fast, but I've never really seen him break into space enough to know if he'd get separation.

I think Gullys long TD vs Nova was on a counter trap. Believe we tried some of the same vs ND but they had defenders pulled In so tight that it didn't create much space.

TheCusian makes a lot of good points. That being said, I'll be honest I haven't paid attention in the run game as much this year.

BUT

Now that you said this I'll surely be looking for counter and trap tonight.

I'd be very surprised if I didn't see it.

There is almost always a pass option off all our runs and vice versa. The zone read in principle is misdirection, but, not in the classic terms you're thinking. Basically the premise is to leave one man unblocked (typically the backside DE) and if he crashes the QB keeps, if he stays home he gives. You can make any guy on the D your read man but it's reserved mostly for DE's and to a lesser extent DT's. (Villanova was known for switching their read man)

In the run game you can still pull lineman and bring motion across to setup the blocks you want out of our offense, it just looks different than counter/trap out of the classic I even though it's a very similar premise. It's all about stretching the field and creating better angles for blocks and running lanes.

Now for a quick example as to how this works in the pass game. Out of a 2-back Spread set you run fake at the DE, (if he stays home then fine the QB gives), but, if he bites and the QB keeps, now he rolls out, occupying SLB or WLB. At this point you make the corner make a decision with a slant or a go from the WR and as a combo route a swing from the other RB or an out from a slot man. In theory the defense can't cover everybody if done correctly. And there should be an easy decision for the QB. It's basically misdirection at all points on the field. Evolution baby!

This I love! Haven't seen it done before, but I love the innovation. Does the second RB follow the QB as an option run attack?

That said, I don't trust Hunt to run it because he has a hard enough time moving through his progressions on designed pass plays. This would just be a complete overload for him.
