MLB, MLBPA Agree To Single Trade Deadline, Changes To Roster Size

“Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have reached an agreement on a series of changes regarding roster construction, per both Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) and Jeff Passan of ESPN. While it seems that this wave of agreed-upon changes will not technically impact actual in-game rules, the two sides have agreed to make July 31 a hard deadline for the completion of trades, thus doing away with the convoluted August waiver system. That change will go into effect for the 2019 season, and beginning in 2020, the standard roster size will expand from 25 to 26 (with a 13-pitcher maximum). September rosters, meanwhile, will shrink from 40 to 28 (with a 14-pitcher maximum).”

I like all of these changes.

Eh, I liked the 40 man roster. It was fun seeing a bunch of randos.

I like it all.

Girardi once had a plan where the 40 man should be used in April and not September. Said it’s cold and teams are dealing with more injuries, so to allow them to bring guys up and not have it hurt their eligibility, but to give some teams a relief and a look at prospects in the bigs, was good.

September should be for real baseball.

Also, many teams don't call-up their top prospects in order to minimize service time.

This is supposed to be getting addressed in their talks going future. Everyone hates it and it makes no sense. That and I believe fixing the ridiculous pay scale where Cy Young winners are getting paid $500k.

All-Star Game: Runner on 2nd for 10th inning and beyond.

Mound visits reduced to 5.

I don't love the "minimum number of batter for pitchers," but I can live with it. I do think it will go a long way in speeding up the late innings.
I hate that.

Now they are with strategy too much.

Goodbye lefty specialist...

Address the shift, call it an illegal D and make them start 2 & 2 on the IF and on the pitch you can shift etc.

Not how you can substitute.

I hope they don't address the shift. I would prefer players adjust.

I get that side of the argument too, but to me its like legal pass interference.
I am talking a bit out of my a$s because I don’t follow hockey closely, but I recall ten to fifteen years ago the “Trap” being a problem. I remember people proposing rule changes to prevent it. To my knowledge, no rule changes were made. I do not hear it discussed anymore. I suspect that offensive strategy evolved. I hope that in ten years we can say the same thing about “the shift.”

they made rule changes that made it more difficult to trap, but you still can if you are good enough...its just easy to break.

basically they took away the '2 line pass is a no-no' so we go back to the defensive end for a faceoff and made it legal for a longer outlet on a fastbreak. refs were also told to call more penalties.

in other words, Pat Rileys Knicks all would've fouled out in the 1st half.

its why i think my suggestion of 'shift if you want, but you cant go till the pitch is thrown' will work better than a ban on shifts.

you just have to make the play, cant set up for it.

Lefty specialists can still be used but they must finish a half inning or face 3 batters.

Well, yeah.

But nobody sets a lineup lefty lefty lefty.

Aaron Judge wants to...and will, hit off you...

Bring a lefty specialist with 2 outs.
If he can’t get the out well then he didn’t do the job anyway.

don't like it.

its Big Brother telling managers how to manage.

Lefty specialists have been declining the last few years anyway. Didn't realize it but saw some stats on it
On the Effectively Wild podcast, I believe it was said that this rule would have only impacted 4.5% of relief appearances last season.

I have warmed up to the rule. This will actually require more strategy on the part of managers. I do hope something is added to the rule to deter the faking of injuries.

They can probably say you need to go on the IL or something if you leave with an injury
