Bromley Against Minnesota in Last College Game
SU DT Jay Bromley Chosen in 3rd Round by NY Giants (PS; Mink)
Syracuse defensive tackle Jay Bromley was selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday night.
The No. 74 overall selection, Bromley joins former teammates Justin Pugh and Ryan Nassib in New York.
Bromley, a third-team All-ACC pick and team captain, led Syracuse with 14.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks last year, a breakout season after recording only four sacks in his previous two years as a starter.
"The light started coming on with him," ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said during the broadcast. "I saw a little bit more explosiveness. I liked his motor, and he chased guys down from behind for a bigger guy."
Bromley was projected anywhere from a third- to sixth-round pick in this year's draft. Giants general manager Jerry Reese told reporters he "reminds you of a shorter Chris Canty the way he looks in his uniform." Reese said Bromley is expected to immediately contribute for a spot in the defensive line rotation and will remain at defensive tackle.
Bromley is only the second Syracuse defensive player to go in the first three rounds since 2006. Chandler Jones, a first-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2012, is the other.

Jay Bromley Was Shopping at Tops When He Got the Call (PS; Mink)
Needless to say, Jay Bromley did not expect to hear his name called by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday night.
Bromley, the No. 74 overall pick in this year's draft, was out shopping at Tops Markets with ex-teammates Jeremi Wilkes and Dyshawn Davis when he got the draft call.
Bromley told reporters he was shopping for juice and getting the movie "Gravity" from Redbox. He was planning to watch with his girlfriend.

What the Experts Are Saying About the Bromley Draft Pick (PS; Mink)
Defensive tackle Jay Bromley was the first Syracuse player taken in the 2014 NFL Draft, becoming the third-round pick of the New York Giants on Friday night.
The Giants have made it a habit recently to turn to head coach Tom Coughlin's alma mater to fill their draft needs, and Bromley is expected to contend for a spot in the defensive line rotation right away.
What is the buzz regarding the pick?
Giants.com writer Dan Salomone breaks out the national narrativeregarding Bromley, plus some other reaction from Twitter.

Doug Farrar, SI.com
"Bromley is a penetrating defensive tackle who should thrive in the Giants' rotation. He led the Orangemen with 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss in 2013. He needs to get stronger (especially against double teams), but there's a lot of potential there."

More on Bromley to Giants (PS; Mink)
Jay Bromley made a quick run to the grocery store Friday night while the 2014 NFL Draft was in progress. Thinking he wasn't going to get drafted until the later rounds, Bromley went shopping at a local Tops to pick up some juice and the movie "Gravity" when the New York Giants called him as their third-round pick.
Total shock.
"I'm one of those guys that think in the worst-case scenario, so I didn't expect to be drafted," Bromley told Giants reporters Friday night on a conference call. "I heard four to six, but the way the draft works, players start going and it's just a whole bunch of sliding scales that I didn't understand, so I just thought of the worst-case scenario — going (Saturday) at the earliest."
Bromley graduates from Syracuse University on Saturday afternoon and must report to Giants headquarters by Monday.
The Queens native grew up a Giants fan and idolized the dominant defensive lines featuring Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan. Now he heads to New York where a par of ex-teammates already reside: Justin Pugh, a first-round pick a year ago, and quarterback Ryan Nassib.
"It's crazy, this is my favorite team — Big Blue," Bromley told reporters. "And then I get picked by them, that's crazy. It's amazing."

Marquis Spruill (11)
Marquis Spruill Drafted by Falcons in Fifth Round (PS; Mink)
Syracuse linebacker Marquis Spruill was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon.
"It feels like a dream," Spruill told AtlantaFalcons.com. "I'm beyond happy. I don't even know what to call this emotion right now."
Spruill, regarded as a late-round pick by many draft analysts, was taken in the fifth round primarily because of his ability to rush the passer and his versatility.
"He flies," ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said during the broadcast. "Change of direction is not quite there, but you get him on a straight line and point him in the right direction, he'll get there in a hurry. His closing burst is tremendous.
"On third down, you just turn him loose."
Spruill ranks second in school history with 41 career tackles for loss. He was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine but showed off his freakish athletic ability during Syracuse's pro day in late March, when he reportedly ran in the 4.5s in the 40-yard dash.

Ri'Shard Anderson Signs with Titans as List of Undrafted Free Agents Grows (PS; Mink)
A third Syracuse University football has found his way into an NFL camp via free agency, as cornerback Ri'Shard Anderson will join the Tennessee Titans.
Anderson reports to Tennessee on Sunday.
"Tennessee was the best fit for me with their new coaching staff (and for) making a 53-man roster," Anderson wrote in a text message.
A three-year starter out of Miramar, Fla., Anderson recorded 30 tackles (two for loss) and one interception as a senior in 2013.

SU RB Jerome Smith Goes Undrafted (PS; Mink)
Syracuse running back Jerome Smith was not selected in the seven-round NFL Draft this weekend.
Smith was projected as an undrafted free agent by most draft analysts, including ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. He was one of a record 98 underclassmen to declare for the draft early, leaving Syracuse with one year of eligibility remaining.
Smith, who led Syracuse in rushing each of the last two seasons, has repeatedly said he holds no regrets about his decision to enter the draft.
His draft fate seemed sealed after a poor showing at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis earlier this year, when he ran an official time of 4.84 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 30th of 33 backs who ran in Indy.
After the combine, Smith said a "handful of teams" thought highly of him and his running style, and his game film will hold significant clout when it comes time for a team to consider signing him to a free agent contract.

2014 Draft: How First Round Picks Fared Against Syracuse (PS; Axe)
Round one of the 2014 NFL Draft is in the books.
Let's take a look at how players drafted in the first round who faced Syracuse University in their college careers did against the Orange.
They appear in order of how they were drafted Thursday night.
Clemson WR Sammy Watkins
Sammy Watkins, who was drafted fourth overall via trade to the Buffalo Bills, came to the Carrier Dome on October 5, 2013 and had a big day in front of 48,961 at the Carrier Dome.
Watkins had four catches for 126 yards against the Orange, including a 91-yard touchdown catch.

Sources Say ACC Leaning Towards 8 Game Conference Schedule Model (cbssports.com; Fowler)
Maintaining an eight-game scheduling model for ACC football has significant support entering a vote of league athletic directors this week in Amelia Island, Fla., several sources told CBSSports.com.
“Momentum seems to be going that way but a discussion and vote is a few days away,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said Sunday night via text.
Added a separate athletic director who has supported a nine-game model: “I think it's leaning toward an eight-game model. That's what it feels like."
The ACC is the last of the five power conferences to decide on the surprisingly divisive eight-vs-nine issue among college football fans.
The ACC is also not as set on the direction as the SEC, whose officials were overwhelmingly in support of eight league games. An ESPN.com story in late April revealed half the ACC's athletic directors prefer nine games.
But as one league athletic director pointed out, much of the legwork has been done well before the meetings. Athletic directors have been discussing this either privately or in meetings for months.
Faculty athletic representatives ratify the athletic directors' vote, which should come Tuesday or Wednesday. Sources stress that the discussions will be thorough and that nothing has been finalized. Directors from recent full-time additions (Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville) plus Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock (hired in January) could prefer a spirited debate in Amelia Island.
