Morbidly curious who will announce first

Who did we land that is elite? Thought so.

We have a better chance of landing a guy like Kadary out of HS and finding a way to keep him here vs getting him via the portal as a SR.

Or guys like Malachi, Ennis as one and done vs their equivalent via the portal.
You are not winning with freshmen. One school(Duke) can. If Red wants to save his job he needs talent in this years portal.

Agree not winning with just Frosh. We need to use the portal to have a solid squad. But that won’t get you to the Sweet 16 consistently. You need elite talent. There is only one place we can get that.

To kick JJ to the curb is asking for another Mintz to Carlos situation, even though JJ was much worse than Mintz as the lead guard last season. I really can't stand how casual people are with thinking the portal will solve all our problems. It is a massive gamble to rely on getting in a competition with literally every other school for a small group of desired guys. If you do not have any continuity of any kind, and just want to replace massive amounts of your roster with portal adds, you will not improve unless you have preposterous money bags and a roster that portal guys would want to join. Last year we were somewhat close to being a tournament team with a first year coach, this year we were well below .500 with a coach who has shown no improvement in year 2. That matters. It costs money to make up for that. It is also likely there will be less portal options this offseason compared to last year.

We simply have to accept the reality of that situation. We cannot expect us to land a guy better than JJ, while also grabbing a new and improved Lamkin Davis Taylor Moore Carlos McLeod Bell etc. That is impossible in our current situation! Unless JJ has ridiculous money demands, or Melo comes through in an insane way with the bag, if he wants to stay we have to keep him, period. Otherwise don't be surprised when we drop a major bag on someone who can't create offense 1v1 against the toughest competition.

The portal should be used to supplement your foundation and fill in the holes from year to year. That foundation needs to be built with freshman classes over the years. The problem Red has and what we face now is we do not have a solid foundation to build on. So we have to replace an entire starting lineup via the portal but replacing the entire starting lineup via the portal isn't going to be a long term recipe for success year after year either. It will be important for programs especially a program like ours to find the balance.

If Red was a brand new coach this would be easier you would target talented Sophomores like Freeman who didn't get playing time at other places and bring them in and build your talent up but Red has to win now so he can't do that. So that will be the job of the next coach if Red can't get the job done next year.

Would rather keep Moore. Higher upside.

Teams are still in the tourney. High major guys like to have landing spots identified generally
What’s that got to do with our guys?

Post of the day.

100% spot on.

Why would any coach spend 3 or 4 years kissing a HS kids arse when three things out 4 are against you.
1: They stay because they weren't very good.
2: They transfer.
3. They go pro.

4. They are good and they stay.
So, 3 years minimum of sucking up for a 25% chance you get two good seasons out of the kid.
No thanks. It's all about the portal. HS kids either need to be one and done to the pros or the odds are stacked against you.
High school recruiting in basketball is pointless unless you’re after a top 10 recruit. Pitino has it right with the Johnnies

Players announce their entrance to the portal. They'll want to go somewhere they like and get a nice bag, so they probably see a need to announce it to prospective suitors.

Also, setting up your own transfer and NIL bingo card with your own rules and limitations is likely a sure-fired way to get the results you deserve.

They can announce all they want. From the school side we need to know where we need to backfill and not sit around to wait for decisions and moving targets.

We need to go out and hit the portal for good players and not assume so and so will be back or so and so is still deciding or negotiating on multiple fronts. The best we should do is to give a player a courtesy "right of refusal". If you are coming back for sure, these are the terms and sign here. If you are undecided, want to test portal water or go pro and need time, fine, we will go find someone, when we are ready to commit to that player, we give you a chance, 24 hours, to decide if you want to hold your spot by signing, if not, your spot and associated NIL will be allocated away from you. I think that is fair.

Once signed no more negotiating and backtracking without penalty.

Say you signed a NIL agreement with XYZ car dealer for 500K, if you change your mind and go to another school you should suffer some financial consequences for backing out.

There is no sense in deciding to recruit from HS or portal as your primary means to fill out your roster. You need to do both and land quality talent wherever you can get them, the right coach will develop and get the team to gel base on the team's makeup.

What we don't want us to be the feeder to the higher tier programs by developing raw talent and losing them.

Right now we have no danger in that we don't seem to be developing good players, our players are all one dimensional with glaring deficiencies.

What if competing programs are not requiring the same stipulations and backout penalties?

I mean it sounds like great hardball until the players lawyer says "Programs X, Y, and Z don't have these stringent stipulations and backout penalties and are offering similar funding."

Do you stick to your guns and move on to player B on the list?

Addition by subtraction.
