Syracuse has by a fairly wide margin the most Big East wins all time. They are the only team that has been consistently good for the entire history of the conference.

But, since expansion for the 2005-06 season, SU is only 3rd behind Pitt and Louisville. There is an outside chance that they can pass or tie Louisville this year, but it will require winning out and the Cards losing at least two other games beside the season ender to Syracuse. Most likely, if it is going to happen, it will have to be next season. Would be nice to leave the conference as the winningest team both all time and post-expansion.

The most remarkable part of this is that expansion occurred while SU was in the midst of one of its worst stretches in JB's tenure, including the first sub-.500 conference record in a quarter century. In the first three years after expansion, Syracuse was barely above .500 and was 9th in total wins. The last 4 years have been really remarkable.

For the record, the best season record in the 16 team era was 16-2 by Louisville in 2009. Hoping the Orange can top that this year. It will be fantastic to leave the conference as the winningest team on so many levels.

(note - UConn also went 17-1, but that was in the pre-16 team era).

LOL. I was going to make a similar post but wanted to hold it off until the end of the season to see if we ended up #1. Since the NBE started play we are arguably the best program and that includes our "down years" during that span. The crazy thing is UConn is 9th over that 7 year span. Yet they are the only school with a ring. Imagine they didn't make that run last year?

As we begin to exit the Big East, I was starting to do some similar research in regards to the history of the league and Syracuse's place in it.

As all are aware, the Big East has been pretty much dominated by three teams (alpha) Connecticut, Georgetown, and Syracuse, although I suspect not quite to the same degree the ACC has been dominated by UNC and Duke.

In terms of regular season titles (either outright, shared, or divisional for those years there were divisions) the count is:

Connecticut - 10
Georgetown - 9
Syracuse - 9
Boston College - 6 (that one surprised me)
Pittsburgh - 5
St. John's - 4
Villanova - 4

In terms of BET championships:

Connecticut - 7 (with 3 runner ups)
Georgetown - 7 (with 6 runner ups)
Syracuse - 5 (with 9 runner ups)
St. John's - 3 (with 2 runner ups)
Pittsburgh - 2 (with 5 runner ups)
Boston College - 2 (with 1 runner up)
Seton Hall - 2 (no runner ups)
Villanova - 1 (with 4 runner ups)
Louisville - 1 (with 1 runner up)
West Virginia - 1 (with 1 runner up)
Providence -1 (no runner ups)

If we use a regular season title (outright, shared, or divisional) or a BET championship or runner-up appearance as significant benchmarks, Syracuse never went more than 4 consecutive seasons (93-94 through 96-97) in the Big East without at least one of these benchmarks. And during that stretch, the Orange did get to a Final Four in 1995-96.

Connecticut had a 10-year drought from the start of the league through 88-89, but they also had a 4 year drought from 06-07 through 09-10. Georgetown had a 9-year drought from 97-98 through 05-06.

While we certainly do not need to hit any more of these benchmarks to show we have clearly been the most consistent of the three dominant programs in the Big East, I would like to see us win at least one more regular season title (almost sewn up at this point) and both of the remaining BET championships so it is clearly evident that neither UConn nor the hated Hoyas did more in this league than we did.

LGO!!!

Cheers,
Neil

I would never guess that Cuse has been in 14 BET championship games.

Wait so - UConn has the most Big East Regular Season Titles, Big East Championship Titles and the most National Titles but Syracuse is the best program in Big East history?

He said should we win one more BET, and how can anyone not agree if SU does do so? We should pull even for Reg season titles this year. Another BET would put us one behind but since we have been to the most you can argue that should count for something. Then there is BE Ws which SU is clearly ahead of UConn (352 to 314). Nationally UConn has SU beat with 3 titles to 1.

Pretty much yes.

Serious question, if you can handle it.

UConn has more Big East regular season titles, Big East post season titles and in the BE Era (1980-present) UConn has more Elite 8s, Final 4s and National Titles.

Tell me why Syracuse has been better.

Because we are Syracuse. I thought that we cleared that up. You could win 10 titles and you still are Uconn. Plus we won the 6OT game and that is worth at least 5 national titles.

lol. Hey - my first post was just for some friendly banter. If any of you guys are making the trip to Storrs, hope you have a safe trip and good (but losing) experience at the game.

Some of us actually have a sense of humor...should be a good game.

Do you know off hand if anyone else has won 16? I seem to recall either a UConn (Ray Allen era), or perhaps a Pitt team (Blair, maybe?) that may have been 16-2.

I only was able to go back to 01-02 and noone won 156 games other than Louisville

are you here to bask in the light of your overtime thriller against 11-15 nova, who was without there best player?

Copied this from a post I made in January discussing the best regular season records in BE history...

UL went 16-2 in 08-09. First loss was against UConn on 2/2. They got to 8-0 before losing.
Taking only schools that finished with 2 or less regular season losses, this is what I found:
UConn 05-06 16-2 Lost their first game of the Big East schedule to Marquette.
UConn 98-99 16-2 Lost to Syracuse after going 10-0.
UConn 95-96 15-1 Lost to Georgetown after going 14-0 in conference play.
UConn 94-95 14-2 Lost to Villanova after winning their first 13 in conference play.
UConn 93-04 14-2 Lost to Syracuse after starting 8-0 in conference play.

That list only goes back to 93-94. I believe no BE schools has ever gone undefeated in regular season league play. The best record ever of the one loss teams is that 15-1 record posted by UConn in 95-96. The Huskies have a chance to keep it that way on Saturday night (assuming USF is unable to shock the world tomorrow night).

Looking at those numbers I have to ask why did we get DePaul again? Was it to try and make Rutgers look good in basketball?

No doubt UConn has more of those accomplishments. The achievement Syracuse has is being consistently excellent from the founding of the Big East until now. Unlike our football program, we've never disappeared from the national stage for any stretch of time.

Since 1970-71...this is when our current run of excellence started.

Our worst season was 1981-82 when we lost in the NIT and finished 16-13. UConn and Louisvile can't show a streak of consistancy like we can.

DePaul once used to be a good program, and they are in Chicago. But they have fallen and they can't get up.

Is that 42 years without a losing record ??? That has got to be a record. Even North Carolina, Duke and UCLA have had losing seasons during that time. Remarkable.

Pretty amazing. Actually in the 69-70 season we went 12-12 so the last losing season was 68-69 which we went 9-16. Like you said remarkable.

Wow so in the last 42 season we have had ONE year under 19 Ws. That is crazy. 16 Ws isn't even that bad and it is our worst.

Serious question, if you can handle it.

UConn has more Big East regular season titles, Big East post season titles and in the BE Era (1980-present) UConn has more Elite 8s, Final 4s and National Titles.

Tell me why Syracuse has been better.
The UConn highs have been higher, but the lows have been much, much lower--even since the arrival of Calhoun.

UCon's volatility is remarkable in the 16 team era. Besides their title run, they also made another Final 4 3 years ago and were upended in the 06 Elite 8 by George Mason, a year in which they had a dominant regular season and were thought by many to be the favorite to win it all. That's a nice set of accomplishments in a 7 year span, its shocking that at the same time they're so low on the regular season victory list.
