When comparing minutes played, you cannot use career total mins, because many did not stay for 4 years. You cannot use season total mins because the number of games played varies between 28 and 40. The only fair way to compare player court time is to use average minutes per game (mpg) per class. I have never seen this data before and some of the numbers surprised me.

Note: Minute data is only readily available from the early 1980's. Here are the mpg numbers for the top 20.

1. Billy Owens (Jr.) - 38.0
2. Dave Johnson (Sr.) - 37.9
3. Hakim Warrick (Sr.) - 37.5
4. Jonny Flynn (So.) & Hakim Warrick (Jr.) - 37.3
5. Preston Shumpert (Sr.) - 36.9
6. Allen Griffen (Sr.) - 36.7
7. Preston Shumpert (Jr.) - 36.5
8. Carmelo Anthony (Fr.) - 36.4
9. Gerry McNamara (So.) & John Wallace (Sr.) - 36.3
10. Paul Harris (So.) - 36.1
11. Billy Owens (So.) - 36.0
12 Damone Brown (Sr.) - 35.9
13 Donte Greene (Fr.) & Raf Addison (Jr.) - 35.8
14 Jason Hart (Fr.) & Adrian Autry (Sr.) - 35.7
15 Lazarus Sims (Sr.), Rick Jackson (Sr.) & Gerry McNamara (Jr.) - 35.6
16. Sherman Douglas (Sr.) & Jonny Flynn (Fr.) - 35.5
17. Derrick Coleman (Sr.) & Lawrence Moten (Sr.) - 35.3
18. Gerry McNamara (Sr.) - 35.2
19. Ryan Blackwell (So.), DeShaun William (Jr.) & Wes Johnsom (Jr.) - 35.0
20. Dave Johnson (Jr.) - 34.9

Observation: JB has been playing a larger rotation in recent times. No current players on list.

Take away the 6OT game, and Jonny Flynn hardly played at all. :)

use a ratio of minutes played vs minutes available

I would bet Gerry McNamara played the most minutes in Syracuse history as he was a 4 year starter that played a lot of minutes freshman year thru senior year. Gerry had 3 35 mpg years.

I think you're right - at least for the first half of the season. Once the conference slate and tournaments hit, the rotation tightens and the top 6 or so guys play 85% of the minutes or so.

I'm stunned that there were 4.4 minutes per game that Lazarus Sims wasn't on the court.

Must reflect some early-season routs (plus the Georgetown game) where we were able to get Nelson and Patrick extended playing time.

Also, thanks for the analysis - this explains why Billy Owens is invariably the example when Boeheim says that he'd rather not bench his stars.

Fascinating data, thanks!

The one that sticks out to me is Paul Harris playing 36 MPG as a sophomore.

That team... :bang:

I can't believe Z isn't up higher. I thought for sure he would be above Shumpert but maybe it's because I've tried to stricken those teams from my memory. Although it certainly wasn't Shumpert's fault.
