I lived in Rochester twice. There are SU fans in Monroe County. But there are also some who are jealous of their sister cities, Syracuse and Buffalo. (They accuse one another of having more snow as if the difference between 140" and 150" in a season was significant) So don't expect 100% positive press coverage or 100% support from your neighbors and co-workers. You'll come across far more negatoids than you might expect.
I liked the Upstate New Yorkers, if for nothing that their stoicism in the face of one of the worst winter climates in the US. (Summers are great.) But as a group they are negative. Where others see a silver lining in a cloud, they'll spot a cloud in an almost completely blue sky and complain.
Expect more SU basketball fans than SU football fans. That's primarily due to the relative success of the basketball team over the past 20+ years. It's also true that Western and Central NYers try to enjoy those last few days of warm, sunny Saturdays in the Fall outside. So sitting inside in the Dome or even at home in front of the TV is less attractive than it is during February at night.
For football, an important part of being an SU fan is the history of the program. Ernie Davis, Jimmy Brown, Floyd Little, Joe Morris and on and on are reasons why a large number of SU football fans have remained interested in the program despite this protracted down period it has been suffering .
We suspect an upswing. But, as with your team MSU, we are still the conference underdog. We expect SU to be better, but few are anticipating us beating the ACC powers regularly in the short or intermediate term. (Sort of like MSU in the SEC)
Coach Babers is, I think, a very easy guy to like and he appears to have an approach and plan for elevating the SU football program. If you like him, it'll be very easy to root for him and the Orange. He also has introduced a rather entertaining brand of football running 80-85 plays a game with a lot of passing and QB running. He doesn't have the kind of spectacular athletes you are used to seeing in the SEC and he attempts to overcome that with strategy and tactics.
