Moving from the south

They sound like Southern Miss. My heart kind of goes out to UAB. The good old boys from Bama apparently tried to do away with UAB's football program because recruits were starting to look at UAB a little more. Btw, I'm not supposed to hate, so just let me say that I can't stand Alabama!!! Ok, I feel better now. Maybe I can get some sleep to preach tomorrow.
I came to Syracuse in 1984 via Wisconsin and North Carolina. I root for the teams from those areas, but SU is my #1. Don’t be too afraid of winter here - it’s kind of exciting! Only problem is it bleeds over into April, which is altogether a disappointing month.

We are going to have a very good basketball team this year. Do try to catch one of the fall games on a Saturday afternoon. (I do understand the difficulty of having children and being able to WATCH a game, let alone drive 2 hours to see one.) I go to all the bball games and if you look at the schedule and see one you are interested in, I could buy you the tickets when I am at the game and mail them to you. Better seats are available for the fall non-conference games than for the ACC games.

If nothing else, dvr the games and try to watch them during your “free” time. Ha ha ha ha! Yeah, I remember having young kids.

Welcome to Central New York!

I am in the process of moving my family from Mississippi (where I am a Mississippi State fan) to just outside of Rochester. I will still cheer for State, but I'm too much of a college sports fan to not cheer for a team, especially football and basketball. Syracuse seems like the obvious choice to cheer for. So what can you share about Syracuse, including tips for attending games?
My wife is an Ole Miss grad, and I am a native Tennessean who is a North Carolina grad. Welcome to ACC country. Hopefully you get into lacrosse. But you will need to find another 'local' team to root for in baseball, because Syracuse does not play baseball.

This brings a happy tear to my eye.

One more word of advice.

It's very possible for a family from somewhere else to be very unhappy in Central or Western New York. In the hey day of Xerox and Kodak, I saw it happen many times. These people were constantly disappointed because it wasn't like home. They couldn't do the things that they were used to doing with the people they are used to doing it with.

Our family learned to do and enjoy the things that were available and that the Upstate New Yorkers did.

1. Consider skiiing as a family activity, either downhill or cross country. It's an absolute blast and kids learn it easily. It'll shift your perspective on snow from dreading it to anxiously awaiting it.

2. The fishing is extremely good. It's just different from the bass fishing and ocean/surf fishing you do in the Deep South. Lake Ontario is the best. The Finger Lakes are good but require a higher skill level. And there are all sorts of streams and smaller lakes.

3. Ice skating, especially for kids. In our old town of Pittsford, there were ponds that would ice over. Kids would spend hours out there, many playing pick up hockey.

4. Lacrosse is a fun sport to watch and to play. SU is the best team, but there are some good DIII schools in the area that are a lot closer. (Hobart? ST John Fisher? RIT? Nazareth?).

5. Minor League Baseball. The Rochester Red Wings are a AAA franchise in the International League. I always like their stadium and thought it was family-friendly. You are watching almost Major League quality at the fraction of the price.

6. Minor League Hockey. Rochester has the Amerks. I went a few times and was put off by the antics of the crowd which I thought was there primarily for the fights on the ice.

My advice about becoming a Syracuse fan: Don't. The only thing it brings is an unusually long life (p rick s live forever) filled with misery.

Welcome. I don’t think we have many ministers on this board.

If you have the money, it's great. We have family who live on the west side of the lake. Their tax bill is staggering.

No one mentioned the most important factor in becoming a Syracuse fan: you must, at all times be somewhat upset about the status of our football uniform.

(Secondarily, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and Jim Brown wore #44 and their history is an amazing deep dive into understanding Syracuse football. Ernie Davis is the heartbeat.)

But openly pining for McNabb era uniforms (the last time we were relevant for a prolonged time) is the key issue as best I can tell.

Helpful tips to fitting in:

- pretend to not recognize team
- complain about not being able to read numbers
- be familiar with the term piping

But most importantly, never get exhausted with the discussion and make your point like it’s the first time you’ve ever shared your opinion on it. Inevitably, there will be a picture of McNabb vs Michigan (we won vs Tom Brady) wearing the correct uni. Auto-like that post.

I love how you complain and get on your high horse about the uniform threads when you've contributed more posts than just about anyone to those threads. That's cute.

Thanks! I’ve worked hard at cultivating that perception and it’s nice that you noticed.

;)

I have never moved from the south but I agree with those who say to make the best of the great aspects of upstate NY. Take advantage of all that it has including winter (skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing). Or, sometimes it is nice to stay inside by a warm fire.

Take advantage of proximity to Lake Ontario, Finger Lakes (including wineries), 1000 Islands, Adirondacks, Cooperstown. I think you will be impressed with what those areas offer.

As for Syracuse games, keep an open mind. Tailgating is not the same as those schools with huge parking lots / tailgating areas. It is more broken up but that does not mean it is inferior in my opinion. The dome atmosphere can be very exciting when they are competitive. It is loud! If you get seasons tickets, get a parking permit. Both tickets and parking is very reasonably priced. Enjoy the indoor football games. You will appreciate them when it is 40 degrees and rainy outside. Enjoy the basketball games...very unique experience. In the spring, take in a lacrosse game or 2.

Hopefully this April is a lot better for Syracuse fans. Specifically, April 8th.
