'Cuse Clinches Share of Atlantic Division Title
Orange beats Boston College in double overtime, 2-1
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Skylar Thomas made his final regular-season game at the SU Soccer Stadium a memorable one. The 6-3 back, who was recognized before the match as part of Senior Night, scored the winning goal in the 103rd minute to lift No. 3 Syracuse (14-2-1, 5-2-1 ACC) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Boston College (5-8-3, 1-6-1 ACC) in front of 1,672 fans on Friday, Oct. 31.

The goal was Thomas' second game-winner of the season and the victory assured the Orange of a share of the ACC Atlantic Division title.

"I am very proud of the way our guys kept grinding," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre said after the game. "There were a lot of tired legs out there. It was a heavy pitch tonight and both teams laid it out there. Thankfully, we came out with a win and a valuable three points."

Syracuse controlled the flow of the match from the opening whistle, but Boston College was the first to score. Diego Medina-Mendez sent a hard cross into the box that bounced its way through traffic and past goalkeeper Alex Bono to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Playing from behind for only the second time this season, the Orange answered back in the 29th minute. Oyvind Alseth brought a defender to his knees with some fancy footwork, carrying the ball into the box before being taken down. Syracuse was awarded a penalty kick that Nick Perea converted at the 28:09 mark to equalize the match.

In the second half, Syracuse continued to dominate the pace of play. The Orange outshot the Eagles, 7-2, and recorded six corner kicks in the frame, but could not capitalize on its advantage. Boston College goalie Alex Kapp recorded four second-half saves to help preserve the stalemate and the match proceeded to overtime.

Much like in regulation, the Orange kept the Eagles on the defensive in the first extra session. The Orange recorded four shots in the period, including a try by Alex Halis in the 93rd minute that riccocheted off the post.

Finally in the second overtime, Syracuse broke through. Less than three minutes into the frame, Halis tracked down a loose ball in the box after a free kick and fired a shot that Kapp turned away. The rebound made its way to Thomas, who buried the ball into the open net with 7:21 left to secure the victory.

Bono finished with three saves for the Orange and moved into sole possession of second place on Syracuse's all-time wins list with his 37th victory. Kapp tallied six saves for the Eagles.

The Orange outshot Boston College, 18-6. Syracuse also held a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The conference will announce the seeds and matchups for the upcoming 2014 ACC Men's Soccer Championship after the conclusion of regular-season play on Saturday.

Match Notes: Following the early miscue, the Syracuse defense regrouped and allowed just three shots on goal in the last 92 minutes ... The win was the 150th of McIntyre's career. He is 150-101-41 (.584) as a college head coach ... The 18-6 shot differential was the team's greatest since Oct. 7 when it outshot Albany, 17-4 … Perea is 3-for-3 on penalty kicks and has four goals this season ... The victory snapped Boston College's six-game series winning streak and was the Orange's first against the Eagles since 1999.

Syracuse, N.Y.
– On Senior Night at the Syracuse University Soccer Stadium, Friday, it seemed only fitting that senior and team captain Skylar Thomas scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Orange (14-2-1) a 2-1 victory over the Boston College Eagles (5-8-3).
Thomas scored in the 102nd minute of play following an Orange free kick. Sophomore Alex Halis received the kick in the box and directed a shot toward the net that was blocked by BC goalkeeper Alex Kapp. However, Thomas followed up with the rebound and slid the ball into the lower right corner of the goal, giving the Orange the win and causing fans to jump out of their seats in celebration.
“I can’t remember much but the ball was crossed in, I think it came down on my foot and I just hit it and it went in,” Thomas said. “It was an excellent night, I couldn’t ask for much more.”
Eagles strike first
While the Orange had the last goal of the game, it did not get on the board first. The Eagles scored in the 10th minute of the game when Diego Medina-Mendez directed a shot toward the net from the left side of the field. The quick strike found its way into the lower right corner of the goal and put BC ahead 1-0.
“He whips the ball in the box and the tough thing is the guy got free and if you give a touch on that I have to try and stand my ground but he missed it and it scored toward the back post,” Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono said.
Medina-Mendez’s goal for the Eagles also meant the Orange was trailing in a game for the first time since its matchup against Notre Dame on September 13.
Syracuse quickly responded to even the score. In the 28th minute of the game, sophomore Oyvind Alseth was weaving in and out of defenders inside the box when he got tripped up by BC defenders. A foul was called, one of twelve for the Eagles, and set up a penalty kick opportunity for the Orange. Senior and team captain Nick Perea took the kick and sent the ball into the left center of the net right past Kapp, who dove to his right. The goal was Perea’s fourth of the season and the tenth of his career.
“Just calm and pick a side,” Perea said as he described what was going on in his mind before the shot. “And then just hit it as hard as I can and hope the keeper doesn’t get it.”
Head Coach Ian McIntyre praised Perea’s overall efforts after the game but also pointed out that senior night can be an emotional one for players as well.
“(He) covers every single blade of grass and was emotionally and physically drained at the end of the game,” McIntyre said. “Sometimes these senior nights can be tough on your team because there’s a lot of swirling emotions off the field you can’t control.”
Second half: “Focus, boys, focus”
There were no goals in the second half but Syracuse applied significant pressure on the offensive end, firing seven shots. The Orange’s strong offensive attack was met with an equally aggressive defensive effort. Led by Thomas, who could be heard shouting “Focus, boys, focus!”, the Orange held the Eagles to only two shots in the half.
The shot trend differential continued into the first overtime as the Orange had several big chances to score. With four minutes remaining in the overtime period, Korab Syla sent a shot that sailed just over the top of the net. Then with 35 seconds left, Chris Nanco fired a shot that sailed just over the top right post.
In the second overtime, the Eagles had a chance to end the game in the 101st minute when Junior Dylan Pritchard had a wide open net but he steered the ball just inches too far right to score. Thomas’ game-winning goal came just one minute later. It was his third goal of the season and second game-winning goal this year.
Cultural architects
Thomas and eight other seniors on the team were recognized before the game. After the win, McIntyre reflected on the role those seniors have played both on and off the field for the Orange.
“I refer to them as the cultural architects of our program,” McIntyre said. “They set the standard, they lead by example and as they mature they become more vocal leaders as well. It’s great from a coaching perspective to see these seniors create their own memories. But what I did say to the group is October memories are wonderful but there’s nothing better than creating November memories.”
The Orange will look to create those November memories when ACC tournament play begins. Tonight’s victory means Syracuse will have a top spot in the tournament, which will take place on November 5th, 9th, 14th and 16th. The official tournament bracket will be announced after all remaining regular season games are played this weekend.

After conceding 1st goal for 2nd time all season Syracuse defense bunkers down in 2-1 win over Boston College

It was a situation Syracuse has only found itself in one other time this season.
An opponent scored first, which Boston College did 11 minutes in, and SU found itself in an early hole.
“Literally, when it went in I thought to myself, ‘We’re still going to win this game,’” defender Jordan Murrell said.
Murrell was right, and the Orange defense stymied the Eagles’ attack for 92 minutes before defender Skylar Thomas won the game in the 103rd minute. The back three of Murrell, Thomas and Tyler Hilliard was stout after conceding early, and held off the Eagles just enough in No. 3 Syracuse’s (14-2-1, 5-2-1 Atlantic Coast) 2-1 win over BC (5-8-3, 1-6-1) at SU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
“You don’t draw it up to concede the first goal,” head coach Ian McIntyre said. “This business end of the season, we will concede goals. It’s how we bounce back from that.”
After Diego Medina-Mendez’s cross snuck inside the right post and past a frozen Alex Bono, SU’s defense buckled down for 74 minutes, not surrendering any serious threats from the Eagles.
But with four minutes left in regulation, the hosts saw the game flash before their eyes.
BC forward Zeiko Lewis fired a shot destined for the bottom-right corner. The goal could’ve sent SU on the road for its first ACC tournament game, but Bono came up with a diving save with the tip of his left hand.
Then in the 102nd minute, Boston College forward Dylan Pritchard shanked a wide-open attempt wide right from 5 yards out after Bono got caught out of position. SU winger Liam Callahan applied just enough pressure from behind Pritchard to rush the forward’s shot and save the game, again, for the Orange.
“You take a big sigh of relief,” Bono said. “You kind of made a mistake on that one, but Liam came back and put some great pressure on him. If there’s no pressure, that’s an easy tap in and we lose that one.”
A minute and 13 seconds after Pritchard’s miss, Thomas tallied the game-winner and validated the effort that the back line and Bono had put forth from the 11th minute-on.
Thomas had repeatedly risen up to win headers over the smaller BC forwards. Murrell and Hilliard consistently won tackles and distributed to the midfielders and forwards with near perfection.
The back three that only allowed one goal in the first 10 games came back to life, and bided time for an offense that had a plethora of chances, to finally salvage a victory.
“They have a chance to knick it and secure a postseason berth and we go down the other end and then score,” McIntyre said. “There’s that fine line between winning and losing games at this level.”
Syracuse has conceded four times this month, against Albany, Wake Forest, Louisville and Bucknell. The opponent drew first blood this time and even had two other threats, but the Orange withstood, thanks in large part to the back three giving the offense time to salvage the winner.
“If they’re going to get a goal, we’re still hungry,” Murrell said. “We still had that much time and we knew we were going to get the goal.”

Confirmed that Syracuse will host an ACC quarterfinal next Sunday at 1 p.m. The opponent will be known after today's final 3 ACC games.

Curious if anyone knows if Ian McIntyre is related to the Ian McIntyre who played for Hartwick (1975 NCAA D-1 national champs)?
