My awkward Joe Lunardi story

Love this thread - have some ties to all of the above random occurances
- our summer rec team in Watertown MA picked up Derrick Kellogg (who I always hated and thought sucked), we won every game he showed up too, had a smokin hot GF who came to watch. He could get to any spot on the floor at will. Good competition but not A10 caliber. His GF was unreal.
- Z and his crew show to Onondaga park, their 1st 2 baskets are dunks, fast break by 5'10 kid who could sky and the next one an alley oop. I was checking Z , actually picked his pocket and scored. We wound up winning and owning the court. 3 games later Bernard Blunt (st joes alltime leading scorer or close) and his crew take us down. Crowd was 3 deep cheering on the white boys. Respect earned!
- BE tourney '92 at the Charlie's in the Garden entrance was talking smack about Pitt and coach Paul Evans was 2 feet away. Being well on my way to a great day, I kept it up and picked up the volume. He downed a beer quickly and left. Curly headed bee-otch!
- wife went to St Joe's - great school, Lunardi is a dink though, best cheesesteak is Larry's across the street from campus. Good times in Philly.

Larry's is awesome, even Kobe agrees.

Please tell me you made him fold, he asked you "did you have it?", and you responded like a boss, "I'm sorry DWIGHT, I don't remember."

Probably '94 I was on an intramural flag football team with other drummers from the marching band. We saw the team we were about to play was made up of athletes in their offseasons. Guessing track, etc. The most notable (or at least noticeable) guy on their team was JB Reafsnyder. I'm about 5 11 and was as tall as anyone on our team so had a good deal of man coverage on Reaf. It mostly wasn't pretty, but I still remember an interception. He wasn't actually in the vicinity of that play, but I reimagine it as getting perfect position on a fade pattern and outleaping him.

Other fun one is '98 when in grad school during block party. I was playing in a band on a porch and there was a decent crowd for us. One guy in the band gets my attention as we're playing and nods toward one area of the lawn up front. McNabb was dancing to us playing. Might have been the coolest moment in school (which probably reflects poorly on me, but whatever)

I had a friend who slept with a couple football players, Kirby Dar Dar for one. Anyhow this was 92 or 93, and somehow I ended up driving John Biskup and Chris Gedney to a South Campus party and hanging out with them for most of the night. I barely remember the details considering the amount of alcohol that was involved.

I have no cool stories like this, but am hopeful this will change!

The closest I have: the wife and I had just crossed the border leaving Canada into Alaska. No cell service, not many cars. We see an old guy on the side of the road with a flat. Spun around to help him change it. I'm 99% sure it was Santa. I might have saved Christmas, ya'll!

Yesterday my buddy posted a picture on facebook... Standing in JAB's office. He delivered him golf balls... You wouldnt have been able to get me out of there. I would have made a hooch, and settled right in.

What was his name?

I have no stories as crazy as others shared in this thread, but this is the best I have:

2 summers ago my cousin was employed by Syracuse University as part of a summer job/internship. He is from California, but ended up in NY since he did his undergrad at Cornell. He knows I am a huge fan of the Orange and asked me if he could get me anything, since I now live in PA and don't get there as much as I once did. I jokingly told him "I want JB's autograph." This was back in the May/June time frame. As time passed I nearly forgot this conversation altogether. It is also important to note that my cousin doesn't know a lot about basketball so Syracuse/Boehiem do not have a ton of significance to him.

The following November he was visiting me in the Pittsburgh area (where I currently reside) and we went out to dinner. He was telling me about his summer work experience, and recounted to me this very funny but not too surprising story:

He was bored one day and decided he would make a serious attempt to get JB's autograph. For his job he had some kind of badge that granted him access to many buildings all over campus. He looked up the building where Jim's office was and decided to try his badge on it to see if he had access. Sure enough, it worked! He walked all around the building for 5-10 minutes looking for Jim's office. He found it; the door was cracked open, the light was on and Jim was inside! Being the smooth and polite person that he is, my cousin decided to open the door without knocking, and confront a very surprised Jim! He hurriedly told Jim the whole story, and ended it with asking for an autograph request for my cousin since "he is a huge fan." Jim was very, angry and said, "This is neither the time, nor the place. You need to Leave NOW."

Needless to say he didn't sign any autographs, but the story was so funny/ridiculous that I laughed for 10 minutes. Needless to say, if you watch Jim's press conferences his reaction to these events is no surprise at all!

My favorite Syracuse Athlete run-in story involves T-Rob and Devo at Chucks...you can guess where this is headed.

Some SU football players were also there talking junk to the basketball players and before you know it, T-Rob swings a right and decks somebody, literally right next to me. I was like "crap, I'm getting out of here," and I did, but not before seeing Devo literally throw a chair right at the face of one of those Chucks bouncers in the yellow jackets.

Needless to say nobody missed any games as a result, so it couldn't have been that big of a deal. But to me, it was NUTS!

Good times

I do have one story involving Chuck's, but I should wait a few more years before telling the story for the sake of our basketball team. It's an awesome story I will say that if somebody wants the private details lol.

One night at the Turning Stone a couple of years back, the entire basketball team was there. I was with my girlfriend. I'm walking with her through the slot machines to go towards the fountain area with my girlfriend. I notice while I'm walking that MCW walks past us AND he checks out my girlfriend in the process. I was pretty pissed as any guy would be, but then told myself I have a girl that a current NBA player player found to be attractive.

This story has a reverse twist. The lobby of the New Orleans Marriott after the semi-final win against Texas in 2003 was total chaos. People were packed shoulder to shoulder, and the place ran out of beer. Young man comes up to me and says: "Are you Joyce?" I say yes, and he introduces himself as a reporter from SI and asks whether he can ask some questions. I say yes, so he proceeds to ask me a lot of questions about the game ... and about the experience of being in the Final Four. Finally, he has one more question... and asks: "What did you think when your son did (whatever)?" Ooops. I tell him he has the wrong Joyce, and I lead him through the crazy crowd to Joyce McNamara. The funny part is ... if the mistake had not been recognized, Joyce McNamara could have been reading in SI her quotes... that she had never made.

The morning after Ohio State beat SU at the Dome in September 1992, I am boarding a flight to NYC, and carrying way too much stuff. I have a dreaded middle seat, and by the time I get on the plane, a man is sitting in the aisle seat. While attempting to put my stuff into the crowded overheard bin, I drop my Sunday NY Times on the man, and the various sections cover him like a blanket. Then, while trying to fix that, I panic and drop my trenchcoat on him...and then my pocketbook. At this point, he is really scowling at me, and looking very angry. I profusely apologize, but he doesn't acknowledge it. I literally have to crawl over him to get to my seat (he doesn't stand or move his legs), and he scowls about that. I decide to bury my head in my newspaper and ignore him for the duration of the trip. As soon as the seat belt sign is turned off, a flight attendant approaches my seat mate and says: "Mr. Brown, there is a young man seated back there who says he's your biggest fan ... and he would like to get your autograph." Yup, it was Jim Brown... who recently had been charged with some violent crimes against women. All I could think was... Thank goodness he cannot throw me out of the plane window.

Not really much of a story, but I always found the 2 a.m. scene at Chuck's when the basketball players there so amusing. The amount of girls desperately trying to go home with one of them was so pathetic. At one point I think during his freshman year, there were girls literally in a single-file line waiting to talk to Devo after last call. He might as well have had a velvet rope there.

This thread is entertaining but also makes me feel pretty lame. I was never a Hill guy but spent countless nights in Armory with HS friends on winter/summer break so I like/can sorta relate to the Dave Johnson story.

The best I've got also took place in Philly @ a Starbucks near St. Joe's - the City Ave plaza, not the 54th Street one. I don't see big black guys with UNC gear there very often. Why it's Hubert Davis, probably. I decide to not say anything and just walk to the garage, which I forgot I did not park in because the stupid thing is full & have to turn around to the PNC/Target plaza where I parked. Here comes Hubert walking right towards me.
"Hi Hubert"
"Hey how you doing" [walking fast, looking at the ground] (loosely translated, I'll try to be friendly but really don't want to talk).
"Are you ready for Cuse to own the ACC"?
"Yes I am", very loudly/assertively.
I don't think he heard the italicized part but still makes for a solid C+/B- story imo. In retrospect I would've tried to work in a phantom foul call on Scottie Pippen jab (though he probably gets that all the time if he ever goes to Chicago).

Definitely gonna check out Larry's Steaks; I work like 2min's from there.

I'm trying to decide what I would pay to watch HD footage of this entire scenario going down. I think I'd drop $100 to see it.

I was interning with the SU Athletics Communications office at the time and couldn't believe that no one would "confirm or deny" anything about the incident to me when I got there on Monday morning...

But yeah, it was a wild scene. T-Rob just hammering on people and Devo chucking chairs. I mean honestly, those Chucks employees in the emergency yellow jackets were always complete tools, but man, Devo got that one guy pretty square on. And anyone who's been to Chucks knows that those aren't flimsy bar stools.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself for about 30 seconds before I realized that I might lose my life if I somehow got involved and got the "" out of there!!

I have three pretty funny stories

The first one was when I was at my frat and Sean Williams walked in and one of the kids in my house just yells out "OMG it's the black avatar!" Sean Williams was a good sport and laughed with the rest of us.

The second was when Jonny Flynn and Devendorf ended up and our frat house late one night at after hours. Devendorf was pretty messed up and the whole night kept following my friend and kept calling him Chuckie Finster from Rugrats. He thought it was the funniest thing ever and kept giggling like a little school girl.

The last one was when I was sitting in a booth at Chucks one time with my girlfriend and Kris Joseph sits down with us and looks at me and then my girlfriend and says "You know, if I wanted to, I could take your girl home right now." My response, "Please don't..."

Ugh - really? Joseph always seemed like such a down-to-Earth guy. That's pretty obnoxious.

I always thought Joseph seemed like a class act. That's pretty low, unless he was completely joking or just trying to be funny. I don't think I'd have taken too well to that. Then again, he's 7 or 8 inches taller than me and 70 lbs heavier...

He, uh, evolved in his time on the Hill.

That crazy culture and lifestyle can do that to a kid. Gregarious freshmen might become somewhat more offensive and entitled as juniors and seniors. Especially with Chuck's in the equation.

Pretty much this. Although he definitely was joking, it's was still pretty douchy.

Now that I think about it though, I've actually had quite a bit of run-ins with athletes (I graduated in 2011). My freshman year I sat right between Onuaku and Ongenaet in a huge lecture hall. They only came to class for tests though so never really talked to them. I had a few classes with Scoop and he would just sit in class with his Dre Beats and flirt with the teacher or other girls. He was actually pretty funny. Wes Johnson used to see this girl on the soccer team that lived next to me on South Campus. One time my mom was in town for something and he was outside on the phone. She is a huge Orangemen fan herself and very outgoing, so she just goes over and starts talking to him right next to his pickup. She said he was really polite and used the word mam when talking to her...She was very impressed. I also had a sociology class about Family with Rick Jackson. We got partnered up for a project where we had to pretend we were a couple and how we would delegate the tasks of the marriage...It was pretty awkward and obviously he was the woman. Needless to say we kinda made a joke out of the whole thing. Every time I saw him out after that he would always give me love though. He was cool. Lastly, I would always run into Jonny Flynn late night at like Acropolis or Cosmos and he always had a huge posy of girls all over him but he was super outgoing and always laughing. He seemed like a very happy kid.

Other than bball, Mike Holmes and Bud Tribbey from the football team were in my very first class and I became friendly acquaintances with them throughout my 4 years. Bud was especially hilarious. I also once saw Arthur Jones bring an extremely drunk girl home that had passed out in a lawn on south campus. Talk about a reeeeally nice kid. Honestly in my experience the football players were the most down to earth, followed by basketball. Lacrosse bros were complete a**holes from my experience (Sid Smith once tried to fight me because he was drunk and started throwing cans at my car) Steve Keogh was really chill though (He would always be walking around campus smoking cigs which I thought was strange for a D1 athlete.
