I’m sure I’ll get called a SU Homer for this view - but here are my biggest takeaways from the past two games.

- This is why the QB is the most important position on the field and it’s a must that you bring in as much talent here as possible. We saw all season what this offense does with Dungey, who is the best QB here since McNabb IMO. When he’s hurt - this offense falls to pieces. With Zach and Rex showing they have limitations to their effectiveness, it’s really important for Devito to be a hit and to bring in a couple more for depth purposes. (What a perfect transition...)

- DEPTH. Dino said from the start that one of the biggest needs for this team is to establish depth that can compete with the rest of the ACC. Sure, we have some really great players in the starting lineup, but our three deep needs to have the ability to step in without missing s beat when they’re on the field, and sadly, we’re not there yet. I truly believe we are on the right track. We are getting the players here. The next step is getting them ready from a size and strength perspective. We all know this takes time. When you lose two starting safety’s, and are now relying on players that for the most part, struggle when on the field - it’s too big of an issue to overcome. Same with the OL. We’ve seen glimpses here because we’re young. Once the strength portion catches up, I’m Not worried a bit.

- Lastly, if someone honestly doesn’t believe this team is on the right track to getting there, I don’t know what to tell you. This is the first time in a long time that (when ED was healthy) I truly thought we had the ability to win every game we played in. Dino Babers is one of the best things to happen to Syraxuse Football. Let’s try and close out against BC and then finish the recruiting year with momentum.

The next two years are going to be really fun to watch.

Good post.

- Slow and bad angle taking Safeties get abused in 2016
- Babers identifies the problem, finds good replacements, defense looks pretty good
- replacements get hurt
- old players go back in, get abused

QB might be most important, but a DE that can get to the QB and disrupt is a close 2nd.

Yeah, if anyone is wondering why Ellison ended up so deep in the rotation, yesterday's game is a prime example. He had a clear shot on the opening touchdown run, and didn't use his arms. Instead of a short gain, he bounced off the running back, who proceeded to the end zone.

WhIle I agree with the main thrust of your post, it is really painful for the faithful at the moment and a legitimate concern with the defense has reemerged.

I never thought we could win without Dungey so, the offense without him was not a surprise. As a matter if fact, the only surprise was how well we did in the first half against Wake.
I continue to have faith in Dino.

The shocker was that we thought the defense had been fixed, at least to the extent that these blowouts were a thing of the past. Now, we know there is a lot more work to be done. The degree to which the defense fell apart is truly shocking and can shake the confidence of the most ardent fan.

I don't know if the defensive scheme is a keeper or not, but it is now a valid concern.

I am not worried about the offense going forward, but I no longer have blind faith in the Cover 2.

Which is weird, because last season he was one of our best tacklers.

Great post.

UCLA likely has the #1 pick playing QB, but because of injuries, they are 5-6.

ED is our best QB and our best RB. And we have limited depth.

Depth. Early in the season when we beat Clemson. Played Miami, LSU, NCSU - our defense was much more healthy. The amount of times Williams and Ellison were out of position yesterday, makes it obvious they weren’t recruited for this type of system. The T2 requires certain skill strengths that sole of our backups just do not have. Hell, even Zaire who is an out of this world LB, struggles in the T2. I guarantee Nick Richards won’t have that difficulty next year. Once our depth he’s to where it needs to be, the T2 will be much better. Especially with big offensive leads, the T2 will do wonders.

That is the obvious answer (and it surely is correct, at least in part), but I think Bailey's take has merit as well - even more so after Lamar Jackson. Why Syracuse football's defensive meltdown may not be an anomaly (commentary)

you might need to explain the term TAKEAWAYS to our defense .

I think some of that is confidence also. The margin or error is so thin at that level that confidence can play a huge swing. Just look at Miami
