Well, I was at the game tonight. Lots of posts about the game on the board already. I'll give you a rundown of some things from being there vs. watching on TV.

Non-game action...

Before the game came on ESPN, I don't remember this happening at other games I've been to thus year, but both teams were arm and arm during the national anthem (each team on one side of court), then both teams met at half court and shook hands. Thought that was nice.

There were several but not much orange to be found in the sea of white among the fans. But there were some faithful. It was funny at halftime, an orange SU fan in the student section was booed as he went out to get a beer, and booed again when he came back in. But nothing bad, just students being students.

At all games during one timeout, the announcer gives fans 3 songs from different artists to choose from to play and dance to. Tonight, at a timeout during second half, all 3 songs were by Whitney Houston, which was nice to see. The fans enjoyed that.

Game action...

The beginning of the game was crazy loud in there. UofL came out in a zone, which I knew they would. Next to SU, Louisville probably plays the most zone in BE. It stymied Cuse who just threw the ball around the perimeter with little penetration in the middle. On the other hand, UofL was able to penetrate inside. I thought it might be a long evening at that point.

As has been a hot topic on the board, the refs were as bad in person as on TV. That 3rd foul on Siva was huge, didn't seem like much of a foul. It changed the whole game when he went to the bench with 6+ in 1st half. And then when Siva didn't reappear until 13+ in 2nd half, couldn't believe he was out that long. A UofL fan behind me was wondering why he was out so long, since he had 3, not 4 fouls. I agree. Had that 3rd foul not happened, I believe SU might have been down much more than 2 at half given how aggressive Siva was before his third.

As you guys saw, some of the fouls on both sides were laughable. I stood there (in the student section, you stand except at time outs) literally laughing out loud. The Fab continuation call...wow, I know many think Fab will be in the NBA next season, I didn't realize he was there now. The foul on Scoop which looked like was Siva's 4th, hmmm. Plus many others. The UofL fans dislike Burr as much as Syracuse fans do...3 separate times, the fans chanted "Jim Burr sucks!" But it wasn't just him. The calls were all over the place.

How SU won the game was crazy. Some folks may be negative about the team after this. 1-15 from 3. Many times in 2nd half I muttered, "Come on, hit an 3!" Never happened. 1-29ish outside the paint (are you kidding me?). Outrebounded by a little, but killed on offensive rebounds and put backs again (argg!). A crowd that was extremely loud! I swear the acoutics were turned up or something...incredible noise in there. I really cheer the SU players for playing through the noise, especially in 2nd half after SU was up 8, and UofL came back to be up 5. It was deafening in there. A tribute to the Syracuse players for their concentration and perseverance!!

Couple key players...Dirty following his own missed 3 from the corner (one day he'll hit some) being aggressive and going after and getting his own offensive rebound for a put back. Dirty again with a dandy layup underneath. CJ and Fab with a few impressive throw downs (despite CJ's mid range jumper hitting way too much rim). Couple nice lobs from Scoop, pulled from game never to return during crunch time. No he wasn't hurt. He was on the sidelines cheering his team on.

As you know, the defense won this game. They played aggressively, moved well, causing many steals. That, plus their play down low. Good thing UofL was off too, including free throw shooting. After the game driving home, heard Pitino's news conference on the radio. Said they were absolutely devastated with the loss. You could tell he was mad.

Bottom line, a terrible shooting game for SU. Crazy crazy hostile loud crowd. But yet, Syracuse still won. This team IS special. No one wins in those circumstances. Syracuse does! Way to go boys!

Oh yeah, when I got home, heard ole Digger Phelps say this team will get beat because of their shooting, blah blah. Yo Digger, SU shot the worse they could possibly shoot from outside and still won, away. Doesn't that tell you something, ya !?

That's all.

Thanks for the report.

I though you were the student in Orange? :noidea:

The third on Siva was absolutely a good call on a reach, replay showed he grabbed Kris' arm.

As an aside, I believe we are now 3-0 this season for opponent white outs.

yeah 3rd foul on Siva was correct. he hacked Kris pretty bad causing him to lose the ball. Replay clearly showed he grabbed his forearm and wasn't close to ball.

I was going to post the same thing, he almost took Kris' arm off. One of the easier calls of the night - never came close to getting the ball. They replayed it a few times as well.

From my perspective, it was hard to tell about Siva's 3rd foul in real time. Didn't have the luxury of instant replay. Thanks for the clarification.

So, I was right, the crowd WAS chanting "Jim Burr Sucks". For that, I applaud UofL.

Louisville has been getting on my nerves...football and hoops they have owned us so this was a very good win. Thanks for the write up and it's nice to hear some outside the lines perspective.

I wonder if Pitino was teaching Siva a little lesson because it was odd he didn't come in earlier.

As for the foul as many have written it was a pretty obvious slap and more times than not refs call that arm movement as we saw when Joseph got called on his whiff that that resulted in a 3 pt play late in the game for his 4th I believe.

And it seemed like once ESPN figured it out, they squelched the field mike some.

Siva should have had 4 fouls at the half. He ran into a Cuse player on a loose ball near the break and no call.

I know I am going to get pummeled for this ... but it was nice getting a crap call going our way. That continuation call was utter nonsense. From the persepctive of he LVille fans they should have been chanting worse about Burr. That puppy cost them the game (along with realllllly bad foul shooting).

I do see what you're saying but I thought it was a point of emphasis that refs were told to call more intentional fouls and for some reason they have not and what happened is what happened. It reminds me of the "high" strike in baseball, they just go and call what they always called.

Didn't White Outs start as a Coaches vs Cancer thing? I was trying to figure out what the significance was last night. I thought it was a CvC thing, something like when the coaches wear sneakers, but this gets the whole fan base involved.

I still prefer Orange Outs. One thing I will say for the White Outs, though, it allows our Orange jerseys to stand out on the court. I thought that was cool.

They do both at The Dome (nearly) every game. Each SU starter individually seeks out each ref and opposing team's starter and shakes his hand. I thought that was "normal". ;-)

Watching the replay, if the continuation call was a bit over the top but if it wasn't call then an inttentional foul should have been. The guy clearly grabbed Fab's arm to keep him from going up. The ref may have thought that it caused the slight bobble and gave him the continuation. Otherwise it shoudl have been 2 shots and the ball.

Was there something in the air there last night? Cause neither team could hit a shot.

Offensive boards were 16-16. We all think we're getting killed, when in reality, it isn't always the case.

Yes, tight defense. there's a reason why both teams are ranked high in many defensive categories (except our rebounding).
