My Take

Totally agree on the game plan. We can't just push people out of the way and win. The two-man game between Tucker and Shrader, the RPO roll-outs and the play-action pass all give the defense multiple things to think about and if the right decisions are made, we can move the ball and score points, including some big plays, despite the lack of a long-range passing attack.

Tommy gives us the long game and can make the QB draw work but Shrader makes the overall running game much better and gives us a toughness we haven't had since Dungey. I'm glad that Tommy already had his redshirt year because we still need him if
Unfortunately he already is

I just don't think any DC going forward is going to let GS run wild for 30 and 40 yard TD runs. Yes Tuckers going to get better lanes, they will probably try to rush Shraders passes and go man on the receivers and try to stop Tucker on the left side with safety help.
On his big run he broke the tackle of FSU best DL and made some others miss. GS is as big or bigger than most LB or safeties. Not saying he will break 55 yard runs every game but I do not see him with many negative plays even with a spy.
Also with his ability to move it could really allow for that Erv type player to step up. If they commit to tackle GS he hits a pass over the middle or to his right for 10 to 15 yards.

Agreed, but the establishing the "Erv-type" player has always been an option...the QB needs to look.

Agree. I think he will more going forward. Only second game starting and really first week working primarily with the ones.

Ftr, I wasn't questioning GS's use of WR over middle. I was just reminding folks that it's always been there and, for whatever reason, TD rarely used that option.

Gilbert is in over his head much as Hackett was in the early going. He will have to grow into the job for us to succeed. My hope is that he will build the offense around the option/play action game that fits Shrader. He likes to run and doesn't shy away from contact - he seems to be cut from the same mold as Graves, Donnie Mac and Dungey..

Six years with Babers has convinced me we can't recruit the pieces to run a spread offense with a pro style QB. We need to return to our roots and go all in on dual threat QBs with an offense featuring a healthy measure of option football. Coach P ran the freeze, trap and triple options with a lot of play action.

SU style option based offense was a nightmare to prepare for and boy it was fun to watch. And it doesn't require NFL bound grade linemen, which we have trouble recruiting.
.
While I agree on some fronts, I think it’s unwise to tie our hands in the wild new frontier of transfer portals, player movement, NIL, etc too much.

I still think we need to be able to make use of the 6-7 games in perfect passing conditions.

There’s probably a way to incorporate all of that. Maybe Dino has already got a blueprint in mind.
