Sorry for posting this late.

Yesterday was a long day, and there was no way I was gonna have time to do it after I got home. And then I had an early tee time this morning at Green Lakes, so I had to wait until I returned from there.

It was a very nice tailgate. I worked some on the big grill, and if you went to the tailgate and ate a burger, hotdog, or coney, there’s a decent chance that I cooked it. Special props to Obie9 for his work prepping the chicken for,the chicken sandwiches, and to VTAaron for grilling them. I had two of them and they were both very good. That was all I had, but I saw there were a lot of very nice, delicious looking high carb choices that I opted not to partake of.

Maybe I should’ve known things were headed into disarray when the prevailing wind kept blowing the smoke from the burgers into our eyes. It wouldn’t be the first time I cried yesterday. There was also some bad foreshadowing early when we saw Heritage Hill had stolen another parking space from our set up. Not cool, Heritage Hill.

13 tubas. Again. Very nice. The SUMB sounded great and I really like the orange berets the sousaphone players wear. Are they the only ones that don’t have to wear the fez-like caps with a giant feather? Anyway, it is a cool look. Sousaphones rule!

Pitt didn’t bring many fans. But they did bring more than most years they have visited here. Maybe 500? I hope someday they start to travel in decent numbers. It would be nice if they started acting like a big-time program sometime soon.

My sister and law and nephew went to the game with me. It was his first football game. He goes to a Syracuse public school and if he keeps his grades in order, can get free tuition to SU. Mom wanted me to start lobbying him to be Orange some day and the process has been started. I think he’s only 10 so it’s gonna take a while.

Let’s talk football.

I get it. Almost everyone has lost faith in Rickie Collins. I think at this point, it is safe to say he is not very good. And perhaps never will be. In his defense, he did make some very nice long throws, and he kept some drives alive with some very nice runs. He is athletic and we should probably take advantage of that more.

But man, he makes a disturbing number of throws directly to the other team. And there were a lot of plays where we had a receiver open, and he just was not able to get the ball where needed to go. I think he’s doing a little bit better job of looking off the primary receiver now, and I like his awareness of the rush when he’s in the pocket. But his accuracy needs to improve markedly as does his judgment.

So we finally got to see the kid play. When Carney first came in, he got a big warm ovation. People were excited to see what he could do.

But he was not able to put points on the board or even to get much yardage. Get beat to the corner by linebacker, which is not a good thing. I think he looks athletic, which is great, but the offense didn’t come to life magically upon his arrival. I don’t think we gave him a lot of chances to throw the ball, and when we did, it was conservative throws to the sideline. I believe they were afraid if he threw over the middle, he was gonna turn it over.

I think the staff knows more about the quarterback situation than we do as fans. I think they want to win as much or more than we do. They are not playing Carney for a good reason. And maybe we got a little insight into this last night. I won’t write Luke off this early, but he is clearly not Superman. True freshmen QB almost never come in and play really well. Especially at QB. This is just a fact.

I felt bad for Gill. He had a chance to make at least three long, huge catches. Now one of them would taken a spectacular catch. And he almost pulled it off. The other two, I think he should have caught. Was he interfered with the one?

I’ve jave not seen a replay, but watching it live, it was clearly interference. Huge play in the game and the gutless refs swallowed their whistle. Shameful. Much along the lines of the lineman who called a couple holds about 10 seconds after any possible holding could have happened (and after it turned out we made a huge play). Things that make you go hmmm…

Anyway, Gill must be tougher, more physical, and fight harder for the ball on the long throws that end up 50-50. He really needs to get stronger.

Thought Cook was solid, as was Villari. Wish they were targeted more often. Allen and Willis are at opposite ends of the RB as a receiver bell curve. What a big drop off.

It’s a shame the offense struggled so much last night. It’s a shame special teams also had a really bad night. Because the defense played very well for an extended period, and really gave us a chance to win props to everyone involved on the defense for making major improvements. I’m not sure if the credit goes to Don Brown, Elijah Robinson, or someone else, but I suspect a big part of it is the increased playing time for some young guns. AD and Tremble are two of our best athletes on defense and they can make plays most of the rest of the team cannot. Peal looked solid. Perry made some plays. Kerr did some good things. And we even had some safety help on some passing plays. Thanks Duce for waking up and helping out some.

Thought Jobity was a force again and Reese usually gets the job done pass rushing. Also liked what I saw of Omopariola. He needs more PT. Bryant seems to slowly getting better. I guess it was a big jump up to this level of football.

Bottom line, this defense is very young and on the rise. I think there’s much hope for the future here.

I was very disappointed with special teams again.

Why return any kick off? We don’t block at all, we don’t run hard returning it, and we seem to make a penalty despite every time we try. Just take the knee and start on the 25.

Please stop making fair catches inside the tent. I’ve asked nicely. Don’t poke the bear.

I thought Stonehouse had another fine game. I don’t blame him for the punt return touchdown. You can’t expect him to tackle a guy who runs a 4.4 40.

I think this was the first big return we’ve given up this year, but it came at such a crucial time in the game. Probably was the biggest play of the game. Did we totally screw up the last minute of the half? Yes. Was time management horrible again? Yes, but I don’t think we even got a hand on that guy returning the punt. Just lots of blown assignments and carelessness. I should note that we did convert another onside kick, with a wild line drive off a Pitt player ride to one of our guys. That was very cool. Of course we couldn’t convert it into any points but it was a very nice play by the kicker. Overall special teams must do better.

In my humble opinion, the biggest factor right now holding us back from being successful offensively is the play of our offensive line. I have been watching Syracuse football since 1972, and I think last night was the worst performance by our OL in all the games I’ve seen since then. We couldn’t pass block, we couldn’t open holes on running plays, and we committed too many penalties, most of which were legit. Yes, Pitt presents problems for ay OL but this was a terrible performance.

To be fair, we were missing Washington. Mack and Ferguson was listed as probable, and they played, but I do not think they were near 100%. Mack was even taken out for one series, replaced by Bertrand, but I think his play was so bad, Mack was brought back in and stayed in the rest of the game.

Cruz really struggled but I saw him limping all game long. He also was clearly playing hurt. I think it should be noted that while these guys struggled, many were playing hurt for the good of the team. Just as an aside, Rice wasn’t even dressed i pads for the game last night. So he was not an option.

Collins might be our best OL this year but he went down early (pretty sure it was a couple plays into our first series) and I don’t think he ever returned. Miller replaced him and it appeared he was physically dominated all game long. He just could not hold his ground again a bigger, stronger, defensive tackle.

Now we get to visit Georgia Tech and play against the team that’s playing by far the best of any ACC school. Awesome.

Maybe the offense didn’t come to life because he was given a couple of series that featured handoffs, qb draws and short passes. He did all that he was asked to. To say that he is/was not ready is not a conclusion any person can draw from last night.

The level of deference for Collins (all while acknowledging- grudgingly - that he isn’t the answer) is breathtaking.

Just how many more games do we need to trust the coaches and allow Collins to figure out the basics of his position?

I agree with your analysis but GT shouldn’t be undefeated they were gifted the Wake Forest win. The best team they’ve played prior to Duke was Clemson at home and we had far more control in Death Valley. Duke moved the ball at will on GT and statistically outperformed them as did Wake and Clemson. They have benefitted from a Charmin soft schedule. They would get rolled by another top 15 team. I just don’t see it. Had Mensah not screwed up the exchange leading to the GT scoop and score that game has a different complexion, Barkate terrorized their secondary. They will be exposed sooner or later and it helps they dodge Miami, SMU, Louisville and while it makes me cringe to say it … UVA. Duke for whatever reason went numb in the red zone and they should’ve scored double what they put on the board.

To beat GT you can throw against them. McCord riddled their defense last year. Unfortunately, we have no passing game.

Coach Brown said it in the post game presser after Pitt: Collins is the best QB on the roster period. All this call for Carney is understandable...but according to the people, who's job it is to make these evaluations, has said Collins gives us the best chance to win! As bad as he has played, that is really discouraging...but it is our reality! With Angelli coming back next year and with 2 remaining years of eligibility left, do we want to burn Carney's redshirt.? I think Ricky is most likely not with us next year, we hit the Portal again for a game ready back up to Angelli, and see how Carney Develops. Syracuse needs two QB's who are game ready at all times!!

I’m well aware but that has nothing to do with what I wrote regarding GT being overrated in my opinion. The fact is they have at least 1 win they didn’t even earn but through the efforts of a historically bad officiating gaffe. If Robbie Ashford can light up your secondary what do you think a Mateer, Simpson, Sayin, or pick a top 15 QB will do to it?

You are only wrong on one thing. The chicken sandwich belongs to the makers, not me. I was told just to not it up more than once.

One day you need to see 76 trombones on the big parade... I'm a huge Sousa, and Music Man person myself, 110 coronets behind. No room for woodwinds :(

Yes. Gill was interfered with. I was at a sports bar with SU fans but some past college football players were there, and all said 100% pi and they showed the replay about 3 times. It was clear. Several passes were also at his feet. We discussed with the center out and the backup in that a lot of snaps were low, and maybe that was throwing Collins perception off when he had to almost pick snaps up off the ground, and then it made his passes low. There was the one where Gill needed to go up higher to make the catch. That was an unusual miss for him as going up high (and being a past high jumper in track) and we have seen him soar to make those catches, as has ESPN has noticed on top 10 calls. An unfortunate miss for him, which has been rare.

Yeah that was clear PI. Fran chewed out the ref pretty good on it.

Both the back judge and the side judge seem to have missed it, for whatever reason.

Was someone singing during the marching band? It seemed like it, and I was not exactly understanding what I was witnessing or hearing. I also was inebriated, but in all my years I don’t remember anyone actually singing during the halftime band performance.

You know what I think the biggest issue is on this team. We have NO true team leaders.

Angeli was developing into that but with his injury that has fallen off.

You would have thought that maybe Duce would have stepped up into that role but just has not seemed to.

I think Antoine and Samuel will become team leaders as the develop. I think you can make an argument that Antoine is already embracing some of the aspects of that role.

Losing McCord, Wax, Barron and Lequint was a loss talent wise but the biggest thing we lost with them was their leadership roles inside the locker room.

Samuels really had a great game. I think his play contributed a lot to the seven sacks. Last week that Pitt QB looked a like a future star, Saturday night not so much.
Agreed we held him in check pretty well… and lost by 17!

Peal played really well too. Kerr did a great job breaking on the INT too. Secondary is coming into its own.

I was really happy with the defensive performance. Given how much they were on the field they played really well (minus the one scramble QB TD).

"I thought Stonehouse had another fine game. I don’t blame him for the punt return touchdown. You can’t expect him to tackle a guy who runs a 4.4 40. "

good day for the punters. stonehouse was excellent with 7 kicks for 320 yds ( longest 55) ,0 tb's and 2 inside the 20. we'll forgive the missed tackle. shouldn't have been punting in the 1st place.
but let's also give an attaboy to pitt's punter caleb junko . 6 kicks for 287 yds (longest 60 )also 0 tb's and 2 inside the twenty. including one under extreme duress that we let bounce and roll .
also agree this is the second time i've seen us fair catch inside the 5. once you backpedal inside the ten...let it go !

one other point on the kicking game. we have now executed 2 totally unexpected onside kicks.
both done perfectly and caught the opponents totally unawares. well that's over. and if you look up the stats on recovery ratios for unexpected on side kick success versus expected OSK the difference drops from 20% to about 5 %. we done shot that bullitt. i predict every team has now seen the tape and will be prepared. nice while it lasted tho.

This defense would have been even better the last couple weeks if they had a chance to breath on the sidelines but with the offense being stuck in the mud, its really taking a toll on the defense.

Also, at what point do we start shining a light on Dale Williams the OL coach?

This OL has looked awful. We spent a decent chunk of $$ on some of these guys. I know the injuries etc but the false starts, the confusion. This is a direct reflection of the coach.

It is also painful to see Enrique Cruz go to Kansas and be one of their better if not best OL. How did we miss this potential here? What were we doing? Because under Dino Cruz was doing great and had not per pff given up a single sack. This is not a "we shouldnt have let Enrique leave" post rather trying to shine light on an extremely weak spot..

FWIW, Purdue fans did come and warn us about Williams.....

I hope to see this coaching spot updated in the offseason.

I agree with this. Based on what we're paying Williams to coach the OL, I'm not sure who we're going to attract unfortunatley. Williams is earning significantly below Daryl Agpalsa at Kansas.

Sure that maybe true. But when we have an OC who likes to have his QB drop back and sit in the pocket, I would think having a strong OL coach that we spend some $$$ would be worth it.

Something for this coaching staff to consider in the future.

I put this one on Fran and the coaches primarily. They seem to be coaching as if we weren't playing our backup QB. I'm sure the end of half has been discussed but I was incredulous at the time that we didn't kneel. The potential negatives vastly outweighed any potential benefit. With McCord or maybe even Angeli that would have been called aggressive. Without them it was irresponsible malpractice. Aside from that the coaches insist on making our backup QB's throw the 25 yard pass to the sideline, why? I believe you called the Carney pass to the sideline "conservative." I disagree. Carney had to put his whole body into the throw just to get it there. That was a gulp moment for me. Collins clearly has the better arm. A little more conservative use of it and a little more use of his legs is what this teams needs to do with Collins.
Lastly, someone mentioned "burning Carney's redshirt." Is that even a thing anymore? Are we supposed to save his redshirt so he can get an extra year playing somewhere else? Redshirting a player that can contribute to the current season makes no sense anymore. The kids that feel they should have played will be the first to leave.

Oh I don't disagree with you and I hope they do.
