I am tired but have a game to go to tomorrow so this post needs to be made now. It has to be short because I need to get some sleep soon.

I am disappointed and upset and my post will probably not be very rationale.

Another excellent tailgate. giacofan and company did a great job with their southern tier themed tailgate. All the food was wonderful and I ate too many carbs. If you got eat carbs, I say eat delicious carbs.

Conditions were very challenging. It was cold. It was really windy. It rained hard both of the time. We had a lot of issues. Somehow no one was killed and I don’t think we lost any canopies. One or two coats may been partially melted.

At the tailgate we talked a lot about Filardi and what might happen during the game. I think we were all pretty upbeat. Anything but Collins made us happy, and gave us hope. We were so naive.

SU announced a crowd of 37K, but I think about 25K were actually in the stands. It was a really poor turn off by the students and a similar poor turn out by the rest of us.

I get it. Halloween is a terrible time for a football game. I have great confidence as she did not want to play today, and told ESPN this. And ESPN told them tough beans. TV provides a lot of money for college football and it also causes a bunch of headaches. My wife was not happy that I was at the dome instead of helping her give out candy to kids and I wasn’t thrilled about it either.

11 tubas. What happened to the other 2? Do we have fair weather tubas? Do tuba players pull hamstrings? So many questions.

Okay, so the masses spoke, demanded a change and a change was made. People were convinced things couldn’t possibly be worse and guess what? They were wrong.

In retrospect, I wish Coach Nixon gave Filardi a few easy passes to get him started. He didn’t. Thought the first pass to Cook was catchable, but he could hold on to it. Early on, I think he had some time to throw but was nervous, rushed some throws and missed around 5 passes where his primary was open. After that, something horrible happened to the offensive line, and they lost their ability to pass block. I think it happened around the time TJ Ferguson got hurt. When he went down, Collins came in at center and Cruz moved from center to OG. That was the beginning of the end.

For most of the rest of the game, Syracuse quarterbacks entered a vicious, extremely fast pass rush on almost every passing play. It was strange, because for the most part, I think the SU office of line did very good job run blocking.

This has been a problem most of the season. The OL was reasonably good pass blocking early in the season but as the season has progressed, just about every starter has gotten banged up, and their performances have really declined.

I don’t think even McCord would be successful with the OL SU rolled out today. At least not after TJ was hurt.

We had a drop or two and I think one time Gill was interfered with, but he didn’t fight it off hard and so it wasn’t called. Our receivers could do a better job, but this was almost all on the OL and the accuracy of the QBs. And Nixon could have called a better game.

Thought the SU defense was really good for a long time. They got a huge turnover and even scored a touchdown. Had a bunch of stops in the first half. Really kept us in the game, despite almost no contributions from a very inept offense. They got worn down in the second half and fell apart, and this is not the first time that has happened this year. But when the office is completely incompetent, as they were again today, that’s gonna happen.

Samuel did a good job returning punts. He incidentally had another good game on defense. Looks like he is playing with a slightly separated shoulder. Awesome.

UNC got a long TD early in the second half. I believe that I believe it was on a screen play. Bryant really screwed up on this play. Not sure what happened but it looked like he declined to try and tackle the guy when he had a clear shot at him. Fran was furious, and screamed at him when he came off the field, and ended up throwing his headset at Bryant’s feet in anger. I don’t believe Bryant played again.

Does Filardi stink? He did today but honestly, he shouldn’t be playing at this point. I think this is a case of a desperate coach looking for a way to get a dysfunctional offense to work. He probably will do better if he gets another chance down the road.

All I know is I have been sitting in my seat at the dome for three games waiting for the offense to,score some touchdowns and in the last three games, have seen them score 2 against Pitt and zero against Duke and UNC. Not cool.

It felt like every time he threw the ball toward the sideline that things went bad. Where were the throws in the middle?

The rollout pass looked nice. Where has that been all year?

We actually did more than inside runs. They are in the playbook! And a power run with a fullback!

I think the Miami game you can give him a second sacrificice chance. Garbage time should go to Collins.

Then during the bye figure out where you are at QB between the three. Start the best one the last two games and letting fall as they may.

It would be nice to see Carney get a real shot. Out of the other two unleashed Pickie seems better as of now.

I just don't get the deal with Carney. Why haven't we let him throw? Is his arm worse than Filardi's? Is he Doug Womack? I am so confused with the talent or lack thereof at QB. Filardi wasn't in a position to be ready but we come out throwing with him. Carney has been here since the spring and all we let him do is hand off or run. Is his right arm a well dsguised prosthetic?

My guess is that they won't throw the freshman to the wolves in Miami and South Bend. I'd expect Rickie back starting and taking most of the snaps.

Fran may have just tried to protect him from the home crowd booing on a Friday night game. It was pretty bad at times at the Pitt game.

Maybe that's a dumb thought, I'll admit. But the whole thing is such a mess, who could really know. The only thing I'm certain of is that this staff thinks as little as possible of Jakhari Williams.

Tom, as late as it was and as disappointed as you were, you maintained a sense of humor. You are a jewel of a poster.

Good point about needing to give a new QB some easy throws to start the game. At any level, coaches usually do this. Strange that Nixon wouldn't.

The thing I don't understand is that his results haven't been bad.

He scored a TD on his one play appearance. He's gotten first downs on two of his other drives. He hasn't turned it over.

The ball has moved at least a little bit. But the staff wants to get him off the field first chance they get, every time. While the two other options lead the country in interceptions and have a completion percentage in the teens.

I don't believe Carney isn't capable of more. It looks like the staff is holding him back. Why?

Exactly this.

It makes no sense. Our other options are atrocious.

I’m in my 40s and Filardi may have been the worst QB to ever start a game for Syracuse football in my life.

Even if Carney isn’t good or not fully ready, who cares?
