Walked the dog after the game, then checked out the latest portal news for hoops. So this is a little late.
Watched on my iPad from Florida. So all I had to go on was the broadcast.
Matt Park and Adam Terry, the normal radio crew, did the broadcast. They were generally good.
As expected, there were a lot of screens and basic running plays. It was very vanilla. In this day and age, being one of the few programs to still do a spring game, the staff clearly did not want to make the broadcast an audition tape for the portal. Though I think there is no signing period just after spring football anymore, which should make programs a little more comfortable having a game. Hopefully next year Syracuse can play Colorado (or someone closer) in a spring exhibition game. This would be a lot more interesting for fans and help promote the game,
As for the game itself, I have no notes and only some general observations.
The game was a pseudo game. KOs and punts were not returned. Most or all the punts were fair caught by OL. Byron looked the smoothest.
The specialists worked for both teams. Jimmy Cregg punted. Looked like he did fine. Fran Brown Jr did the snapping. Thought he did okay.
The holder on pats and FGs was Cregg or ju’juan Johnson, a RB transfer from LSU who was a holder in HS. The placekicker and kickoff guy was Tripp Woody. He got good hang time on most of his kickoffs and usually got them in the end zone. Looks like his range is around 55 yards. I believe his leg is noticeably stronger than last year. The Orange team drove late in the game and Tripp made a long FG to win it for Orange.
I thought Zaid Lott looked big, poised and played well. Odom had some good throws but I think he had at least one pick. Nelson looked okay and looks like the fastest QB we have. Belin looked okay in the one or two series he had. Lauder was pretty solid too, and Matt said he wears 21 to honor the late great Lawrence Moten, which I really admire. Even if he came from Georgetown.
Overall, the QBs looked okay. A few bad picks but they made a lot of throws and their reads seemed pretty solid. Big improvement from last year post the Angeli injury. I look forward to Steve returning to action soon.
As for the WRs, Elijah Moore made the play of the day. Took a short pass over the middle and ran past a bunch of people for a long gain. The transfer from FSU appears to be a legit deep threat. Cole Weaver got targeted a lot and seemed to be open a lot too. Tonight anyway he was a possession receiver. I would guess he had more catches than anyone else. Hatcher looked big and fast and had at least one catch. Wilfong looked tall and skinny and had at least one catch. Boobie and Tyshawn looked like they mostly played in the slot. Darien and Merriweather got a lot of snaps and I think each had at least one catch. Outten played some RB late (I think we needed bodies there late). He made a good gain as a RB and another, which I think was a reverse or a screen. This guy can definitely run.
At TE Elijah Washington-Baker is up to 245 but at 6’7 still looks skinny. I think his blocking was improved. Clement blocked well. Noah Meyers, the transfer from Western Kentucky, got a lot of snaps. Looks like he can catch and block. Guessing he and David will share most of the TE snaps. I still have hope for EWB, Bowman and Dante Bacheyie.
At OL, let’s start at center. Hawn and Stewart were the starters with Cruz recovering from surgery. Both looked okay. If I had to guess, Hawn snapped it better and looked a little more polished. He is probably a bit ahead right now (though Cruz must be penciled in here for the fall). Looked like Brayden Charney is our fourth center.
Mack, Betrand, Scatcliffe, Shepard, Brown-Miller, Pringle and Akinshilo played OT. Washington, Rice, White, Harvey, Boeheim, Shevchenko and Mann played OG. Thought Shepherd looked fit and athletic, along with Scatcliffe and Akinshilo. I think the starters will be Mack and the transfer from Houston. Watch out for Shepard down the line.
Washington looked overweight but dominant at OG. He is surely going to start. Guessing Hawn gets moved to OG to be the fifth starter in the preseason. This assumes Cruz takes the starting position at center.
At RB, no one really stood out to me. Coleman got a big TD breaking a tackle and Johnson just looks like he belongs, This competition might go to the preseason. I think Johnson wins but it is too early to make that call.
As for defense, Kamron Wilson and Jaime Tremble were dominant and made a bunch of great plays. Was impressed by Bredell. The starting CBs were out but I saw Lawrence make some plays. Snowden, Eugene and Ward impressed me on some plays. I think it was Kerr that made a really nice pick.
D’Appolonia is an athlete. Fast and smart. Sackie impressed me. Good athlete.
They gave out a bunch of awards during the broadcast. Sackie got one. Believe it was for most improved defensive player. Darien Williams got the most improved player on offense. I think Matt Hawn and someone else I don’t remember got best citizen, or something like that.
Coach Brown went over two songs they are going to play. One was for went SU makes a first down and the other was for when we are playing defense. They were rap songs and I might well know less about rap than anyone on the board. There was a disc jockey at the game and I assume this is going to be a feature this fall. Not a fan of piped in music but if it gets people making noise, I guess it is worthwhile.
It was good to see the team, and I enjoyed the broadcast, even if it was a little cheesy and compressed. Thanks to all involved in playing the game. We Syracuse fans are lucky we are one of the few programs that still have a spring game. I appreciate the effort!
