My Take

Speaking of simplifying the playbook, was it Don MacPherson who said a few years ago that he was floored when he saw the complexity and number of plays on the QB's wristband, and that when he played they ran about 15-20 plays and that's it?

I know someone said it, and I could have sworn it was in reference to Syracuse...almost positive it was Don...

I've thought about this too. Actually today the 4G coverage was very good. Usually it's terrible and I can't check scores. Truth is that upgrading wifi can run into the seven figures and stadiums don't way to pay it because it won't bring in seven figure benefits.
you read all the articles and pro teams are doing it for less than 10 events a year. Su has triple that. we have to handle on avg 20-25K. it will be expensive no doubt.. but they should also be working with the cell phone companies in bringing in Cows so people can talk and Text..

Its an indoor stadium so the cost to install will be less, the new tech is here now so that would help as well.

I agree with you but on the other hand, will people buy tickets to games because the facility has good cell phone coverage? Probably not enough to justify the cost. That's why it's difficult for venue managers to do these upgrades.

solving the cell phone thing is zero dollar cost to SU. they need to work with the providers.. we do it all the time at our school. Wifi is a cost sync, but some of that is actually not very expensive since they already have the infrastructure and support team, they just need to build it out better.

they wany more people in the seats then making it a better experience.. i have to think it was an issue listed high on that survey we just filled out..

The wifi always works very well for me. Could it vary by section? I am in 310.

What happened with 2 rumored improvements people posted? I thought verizon put something nearby to help with signal and I thought SU did something in the Dome, even outside, to increase the wifi signal. Both are a little better, but not great. And it all drains the battery quickly especially when it's looking for a signal.

i imagine given the limited range of wifi that some sections are much better than others due to crowd density. i have yet to get any wifi signal this year so i dont try and more i just use cell and 50/50 whether the txts go thru.

That's about my situation.

I agree, simplify is a verb and not some rigid or frozen state. I felt like at end the second quarter they did simplify a bit and went back to their normal quick tempo offense and seemingly fewer new formations. I believe this came after the illegal substitution penalty which killed the nice field position after Hunt connected on a long ball with West. At the very least simplifying means the guys line up without thinking if they are in the right spot. You give them the best chance to succeed, and then you build on that and sprinkle in the more and more. You can simplify and be creative at the same time.

One thing I always fall back on with the offense, and this is appropriate with #5 at the game yesterday, SU never really had a strong offense after #5 graduated until 2012. Marrone and Hackett learned a lot along the way about what they could and could not do at the college level. They adapted and became more flexible while remaining stable, and now they work in the NFL where they have more time with the players who are pros and Marrone and Hacket can be more complex if they choose. At the end of the day it's about giving the players the best chance to move the chains and put points on the board and, of course, get a quality education! Learning the difference between what one can change on a week-t0-week basis and the rest that one may want to implement but one has to let go to another day is an ongoing challenge.

The defense looked played great. #3 going down disrupted Wake, but they failed to adapt. SU's defense was stout. I think Wake had zero first downs in the first quarter, and the defense played a complete game! They played hard until the end.

This team always plays hard to the end. I saw no quit 2 weeks ago, and I saw the same thing yesterday when they could have relaxed and risked giving up big plays and possibly some points. They finished the job.

^---- good post.

I was late to the tailgate because of a golf commitment. From what I could see it was well done and a big success.

Very disappointing crowd at the dome today. Poor turnout by the students as well as the regular fans. My guess is that the crowd was approximately 21K.

The good news is, the fans that showed were loud and supportive. Wake Forest brought a very small contingent. I estimate maybe 150 people.

We cut a huge perhaps season changing break when Campanero went down with an injury early in the game. Wake relies on him for their offense more than any player in the ACC. Losing him was devastating to them.

Still props must be given to the Syracuse defense for giving a great performance.

Thought the key to the game was Syracuse's ability to put pressure on the quarterback, often only rushing three defensive lineman.

Great job by Micah Robinson, Isaiah Johnson, and most especially Jay Bromley.

Nice job by the defensive coaches, who used a mix of man and zone pass coverages and well disguised blitzes to confuse the Wake Forest passing attack.

As good as the Syracuse defense was the first half, the Syracuse offense was horrible. Amazingly bad. Execution was bad. Play calling was bad. They often struggled to even line up properly.

I give credit to offense of coordinator George McDonald for being innovative and extremely ambitious. He has the offense using an amazing variety of formations. This new offense seems to borrow from every scheme known to mankind.

The problem is, it is too much for the kids to handle. Players look confused on a regular basis. Execution is consistently bad. There is a desperate need to simplify things. Frankly there has been for sometime.

This is not uncommon for a young offensive coordinator. Nathaniel Hackett ran into the same issue during his first couple of years calling plays here.

In the first half Wake Forest played eight or nine minimum box and dared Syracuse to pass. George took with the defense gave him, passed a lot, mostly bubble screens, with little success.

In the second half, the offensive had more success, using a mix of running and passing plays.

Someday in late November, perhaps we will look back to the first drive of the second half, as the hard nosed drive that defined the season and made the season a success.

Thought Hunt had a good game. Threw the ball quite well. Made good decisions consistently. He was a major factor in this game running the ball as well. Best of all he had no turnovers and was not close to making one. If he can play like thistle rest of the season, we will go bowling.

At halftime, the SUMB (10 tubas), did a tribute to Earth , Wind and Fire. Some unknown people sat in on the session and played some serious trumpet. Nice job: very enjoyable show.

After the very ugly first half, so was the game.
sorry Tom your 21 k estimate was way off still dissappointing but alot more were there then Tulane or Wagner Im sure of that seats were sold way high in the upper deck sidelines despite the gaps. endzones were about 60 % full . there wewre about 30 to 32 butts inseats. greast recap other then that
