First, wantsd to mention that tweeted almost all the plays from the spring game. Check it out if you like:

Sat in 116 with a big contingent of syracusefan.com people. A number of us went to J Ryan's after the spring game to watch SU beat Hobart on lacrosse. Good times.

Some general impressions;

Like the new different options for season ticket pricing and I like that they took the time to label the different areas and how much each cost.

Liked the idea of free food. They fell way behind executing the plan and a lot if people either had to come back or just gave up on getting a hot dog, but good try.

Getting into section 116 was a hassle because it was only open to season ticket holder and they only had one laptop to handle a lot of people. Lots just opted to sit elsewhere. I like the idea of trying to give people an incentive to but season tickets but it just wasn't executed well. Next year have 3 or 4 laptops instead of just 1.

Liked having Coach Shafer give a speech at the start of the game. The man is a good speaker and he got people fired up. Wish he talked more during the game.

Didn't like seeing only 6 tubas in the make shift SUMB in the end zone. Looks like we are gonna need a monster tuba recruiting class to get to the major number of 12.

Didn't like the play calling, which was almost completely built on screen passes to the line of scrimmage. I understand they don't want to show the outside world much but wow, that was screen-tastic.

Estime was impressive. He was always open and was a threat to score every time he touched the ball. Broyld also looked really good. It should be noted though that the defense was short CBs and a lot of the damage was done against walk-ons. Still, I look for those 2 to get the most receptions this season, followed by West and Parris. Kobena looked very good too, more confident than I have ever seen him in the past.

Hunt looked far, far in front of the other QBs today. Bigger, calmer, more accurate, and other than Eilson, his arm was a lot stronger than the other QBs. Don't think he tried to run even one time, probably by design to be sure he didn't get hurt.

Long struggled with his throws some. Needs to improve his arm strength. Was hampered, as all the backup QBs were, by poor pass blocking
by the decimated offensive line.

Kimble looked a bit more comfortable in the pocket and he looked agile, though not as agile as the fleet footed Long.

Wilson got the least playing time and looks like he is 4th string but he threw the ball really well and looked very smart today.

Whigham can really run and caught Estime from behind with a great diving tackle. He appears to be out best cover corner but Reddish, out today with an injury, might have something to say about that in the fall.

Desir was all over the field, as was Kelly. Kelly makes the spectacular plays while Desir is more old school being on the right place most of the time. Both are solid. Scissum runs well and has good size and looks like a future star at safety.

Hutchinson got off to a tentative start kicking FGs and PATs but showed a really strong and accurate leg. Was drilling 42 yard FGs before the 2nd half quite effortlessly. Ross has some competition.

Riley looked good, his hang time and flexibility appear improved. Should contend for all conference honors.

All the RBs looked good, not a lot to separate them but GM II appears a cut above the others. Good blend of speed and power.

I thought Winfield looked a bit better than the other frosh WRs, he just looks more comfortable out there, but they are closely matched right now.

Thought Welsh looked the best of the DL, followed closely by Robinson, Simmons and Coleman. Thompson was also very impressive, he can rush the passer. Crume was surely also good but he is more about clogging the middle than rushing the QB.

Davis was one of the dominant forces on defense, he is larger, still runs really well and hits like a truck ( he and Kelly are going to win some bones this season).

Fun time, good experience, good job SU to make it that way. I remain optimistic about 2014 at this time and give the team a cautious buy rating.

Great report Tom. Have to disagree about Welsh though. imo Thompson and Simmons are far and away better options then Welsh and Robinson. SugarBear was causing all sorts of problems, and Simmons was all over the place.

As for all the screens I think it has to be a mix of what you said and all the offensive line injuries. I don't think we wanted to get our qb's killed dropping them back in pass protection, and same for the running backs.

My suggestion on the lack of tubas.. War Damn Tubas

Based on small sample size- if SU has Wilson as a 4th string QB - we be in good shape at the position. Liked his arm and his body language.

have to assume they want that pure dual threat as an option. otherwise wilson looked great

Nice write up.

Unfortunately we had to go offense vs. defense and it made the event drag. I think if we ere able to have more of a game we would have been much more excited.

I sat right behind the DJ and Isaiah Johnson's dad sat in front of me. The guy is huge.

I was afraid when Miller and Hodge went down but both were back in and seemed great. Miller looked good at center. I didnt notice Emerich.

Two linemen that stood out were McGloster and Palmer. Both are huge and have some potential. I also noticed a #77 and couldn't tell who he was wasn't listed on the roster.

As you said Tom, it looked like they held most of the starters out of any major contact and kept the game very vanilla. Broyld and Estime were probably the best looking out of the receivers although, I thought the same a couple years ago, I feel like Flemming is my sleeper. Kid just looks the part if he can stay healthy. He reminds me of Mike Williams. Kobena also showed his speed on a nice cut back at the five. He was thrown a bubble and cut it all the way back to the other side. Macky was riding Spruill pretty hard on the sidelines.

There were quite a bit of post players on the sidelines. They all looked like they were having a great time. Macky and Bromley looked like two kids who were best friends just hanging out in the back yard. The comradery of these guys is amazing. Speaking of sidlines, I could have sworn that I saw Freeny on the sidelines and Steve Gregory walking out to the car. I could be wrong.

Ben Lewis has some nice size at WR. It will be interesting to see if he can get in the mix. Went to Avant a few times but it was mostly Broyld and Estime who got the call

I think the QB that impressed me the most is Wilson. I said this because they held Hunt out of most the game. If I was to assign roles after what I saw today it would be: Hunt, Wilson 2a, Kimble 2b, Long. Long looked like a freshman out there. Man he is a small fella. I hope that he is willing to stick around because there is a lot of work to do and maybe a position change down the road. He did a few nice things but had problems seeing over the line. He seemed to pout when he was on the sideline. I would have to say that Wilson threw the best long ball on the day.

Not much on the running back front. Morris had a few nice runs. I would have to say that McFarland looks like the fastest back out there. Not much from PTG although it was pretty much bubble screen all day long.

The DL got pressure on the QB a few times. Crume is going to be a stud and Coleman looked the best alongside him. Big Wayne has a way to go.

Thompson, Welsh, and Simmons looked good rushing the passer. I think we will have a good push from the DE this season. Although I think the one with the most potential is Isaiah Johnson who of course is on the sidelines.

As far as the LB's. There was not much to say. There was zero blitzing on the day. And not much to call. Hodge and Ollie Vigil look like they will do fine holding down the Middle. Kirkland showed some nice speed and had a few nice plays. Just like last season he was everywhere. It looks like he recovered from his injury.

Scissum and Kelly were the stand out players concerning DB. As of right now I would say that Estime is the Xfactor on offense; Kelley would be my Xfactor on defense. Morgan played well at CB. Saw him at the Mall after the game and he was pretty happy with his day. Didn't want to bother him to much being with his kinfolk. Did see Eskridge on the sidelines chatting it up.

Coaches really held the defense back and most of the scoring came on walk-on players. I couldn't honestly tell you much about this season after what I saw today other than this is Hunt's team. He just exudes leader. Not saying he is as good but I would compare his composure to the likes of Payton Manning, Elway, Staubach, etc... The kid really seems cooler than the other side of the shade and humble. He holds himself as a professional. This is his team for the next two years.

Lots of recruits on the field on the beginning of the day. Eric White was working his magic schmoozing with many of them.

It was cute to see the Shafer kids hanging out and chatting it up on the field before the game. They say the apple does not fall farm from the tree and seems as Scott has done just as great as a job in the home as he has for the program. I am sure that he would give credit where credit is due and point the praise towards the Mrs. I really am excited about this coaching crew. If we can keep them together they could do something special.

Edit:

Saw Rak, The Coon, Bj, Patterson, and Gbinije all whom gracefully posed for pictures and seemed to be having a great time.

I agree with you. Thompson and Simmons looked very good. By far the best DE's today. Both are fast off the edge. Thompson put a outside in move on Lasker that was nice. Believe he got a sack on that play

That was a great move he put on Lasker. without a doubt was a sack. big day for Ron

Somethings gotta give with this QB situation with Edouard coming in in a few months. Five QBs total, and I think the four who played today all did very well. Either a position change or a transfer for somebody after this season.

i still think Edouard will eventually become the #2 by next spring
His speed really pops off the screen in videos... But, he also could change to another position just as easily. Alin at cornerback could bring a smile to my face...
Little shocked at how small Long looked on the field this afternoon, and he's slower than Alin as well...

i think the last qb they would plan on moving is Edouard. he should be given every opportunity to be the future of Syracuse Football

Hey, I'm totally on board with that too... I remember when you first brought up Alin's name in recruiting, he's practically your recruit...

Caught the first half. I thought the wide receivers looked much improved as a group. The caveat is that in my opinion they were playing against only two game ready corners in Wayne and Julian. Corner has me a little worried. Would like to see depth- I think the freshman with dowels et al can bring it but would not mind seeing someone like Winfield moved over. Kobena I think would be ideal but runs a little stiff (although looked a bit more fluid yesterday also).

out of watching the high school film of all the present and incoming QB's. Alin was the one that showed he can make all the throws. He threw a great deep ball and showed great zip on intermediate routes. And add in the run factor.
