Besides the obvious, make it a 2 level foul.

Take the guy out of the game. Have the review handled buy someone other than the ref on the field.. handle the replay while the game goes on and if its changed let him play again if not nothing lost.. No reason to have a play like that delay the game for 5 min

you made a play, they called a penalty, enforce it, remove the player, decide if it was targeting worth removal from the game. if not he goes back in.

I get that sometimes they decide it wasnt a penalty, but the reward is he gets to stay in the game..

They dont review penalties like roughing the kicker for major or running or facemask so why is this reviewed any different..

Players should not be ejected for the entire game. Maybe on the second violation, but not the first.

What if they got scored on while a key defensive player is out and the review comes back no targeting ? That’s very unfair

not to me.. you put yourself in a place to get a foul. why stall the game for 5 min to review it then.

if it was hockey you would be out for 2 or 5 or ejected.. fball the same hit is just confusing with the time to decide..

lead with the helmet to the head you're done. simple rule. very dangerous to both players.

I would be fine with that. but since that have a review and over turn rule in place.. do it and let the game move on.. If he comes back great.. if it causes a score by being out then thats too bad.

i have seen several calls where the tackle itself seemed legit and/or the offensive player led with their helmet or changed planes on a slide whatever. the intent was to get defenders to learn to tackle differently than they did in the old school jack tatum "assassin" past. hitting and crippling defenseless players.
do i agree with all the ejections ? no. do i think we've made the game a bit safer for everybody ? yes.
perhaps a distant post mortem review of egregiousness could be conducted to decide whether a player should be allowed to return next quarter. but for now i'm cool with erring on the side of safety.
