Nait George in the portal

Who’s bright idea was that lol
Not surprising that it costs more to acquire a player than retain one. That's how free agency typically works.

Unfortunately, George stunk. I don't care if he got better in the last few games since the season ended with the BC loss in January.

Someone here warned us that his play at GaTech didn't match his stats. I wish Red and Kline could have seen that.

I do wonder how much tension teams deal with because of disparities in pay
oh it’s a big problem. The “opinions” started with Jesse E and Judah. That was ugly when it began. Quadir too. Especially after he hit the game winning 3 that one time.

Well again I preach you need to find the right group who doesn’t care about that and they come together and win like Michigan is going!

Donnie took a pay cut by a lot to come back. NG had a lot of suitors. Problem was he wasn’t motivated to win. Not many do once you get that kind of money. Set for life basically from one year of college ball
I get your point, but no one is set for life with $2 million at age 21. After taxes, agent's fees, lawyer's fees, etc. he has a nice chunk of money to invest, which will get him some financial flexibility. But these guys are going to have to work for a living, and there's every chance that SU money is basically gone within a few years.

I meant where money won’t be an issue or a worry, not retirement. Especially the way some of these kids spend. It’s crazy

Which with almost a complete roster reset probably is a help because you can manage a roster with more equity in starter pay to try and work though all that ( as best you can).

You mean like this arrangement in MLB:

The Chicago White Sox invoked a "diminished skills" clause in Frank Thomas' contract after the 2002 season, citing a decline in performance following injury-plagued years. This provision enabled the team to drastically cut his base salary and defer over $10 million, triggering tense negotiations, a potential free agency, and his eventual departure from the club.
Pay for performance is not NIL. Frank still got paid for his commercials, despite declining performance.

The thing is, his numbers weren't that great either. It was pretty obvious even with just a cursory glance that he struggles to score.

I think I said it at the time when we were recruiting him that the vision seemed to be putting him in ball screens with shooters around him where he could make the lob pass to our athletic bigs or kick out to shooters. And that as teams get a scouting report on us, they'd probably start to stay at home and dare George to make shots.

The ball screen and lob pass parts translated but we didn't really get the shooting around him that he needed to succeed.

JJ turned out to be an awful fit to play with George albeit bad in general too and then Kingz really struggled early on too.

I get it. But he'll still have money worries even if he has $1 million in the bank today. We all know life is expensive. A million bucks doesn't go as far as some might think when we're talking about the next 40-50 years.

Sometimes the best deal is the one you don’t do. It seems Misallocating whatever money you have and combining that with certain personalities can derail the team concept. Who would have known?😉

I do wish that folks who have a more critical, but measured, eye for talent weren't shouted down as regularly as they are here.

I didn't know a damn thing about George, other than his assist average. I recall a few people suggesting he wasn't the elite PG some were making him out to be, but they were quickly chastised.

I think there's a lot of truth to this, but it was also tough coming off the prior year because while guys like George and Desmond Claude who we were debating over had very clear flaws IMO, they were also huge upgrades over the transfers we had brought in the prior year.

I also think George seemed like a pretty good fit at the time because it seemed that we had the athletic bigs to pair well with him (which we in fact did) and were targeting shooters on the wing that would help open things up for he and those bigs (which we got with Kingz and sort of with Betsey but JJ and Kiyan playing next to George really hurt us in that regard.
