NBA Draft Toolbox: Syracuse System Puts A Shine On, Obscures Pro Prospects

From the article:

"Syracuse defeated a far more talented Florida squad earlier this season, primarily because the 2-3 neutralized the Gators' strengths (their ability to drive to the rim) and exposed their weaknesses (poor perimeter shooting)."

Uh, what?

First, 'a far more talented squad'. Really?

Second, Florida is the 10th ranked 3 pt shooting team in the country.

But but but...someone wrote it down...on the interwebs...& its about us, so...it MUST be true!!!

Actually, this is all you need to read in that article to know (while I agree with the premise) that it's a poorly researched by of crap:

Passing: Doesn't have skill level to make anything but basic unguarded passes. Has 12 assists and 23 turnovers this season.

That was regarding Fab. Let me make this clear: I have seen Fab make two passes this season that I have NEVER seen a C make at any level. At least that I recall. One I had to rewind to see if Fab made the pass.

Yes, Fab can turn the ball over but he hasn't been playing the game at this level very long. His vision and anticipation (when passing) is actually excellent and his mindset when he has the ball is unique. And, he can actually throw a bounce pass (an artform that doesn't exist as an artform anymore).

I don't disagree that SU players are not that good in the NBA (although I think Warrick is better than this guy thinks...I wonder how many Suns games he actually sees).

This guy is clueless. He looks at stats and evaluates guys games. I understand his premice which is fine but there is some rediculous stuff in that article.

Its funny when we read guys talking about one of our players because they may have seen them play what 3-4 games while most of us who post on fan sites daily have seen every minute of bball these guys have ever played in an SU uniform. I usually rewatch most games before the next one to catch stuff I missed or see exactly what we were doing that was working on offense or defense. The same goes for the team we basically study SU bball as a hoby while national medea types follow all the teams and simply cannot know as much about SU as we do.

All big guys turn it over and have a poor A/TO ratio, duh. Drummond has 9 assists and 26 turnovers.

JJ Reddick - topnotch college player, playing man to man at Duke. Crappy pro. Playing zone is not the issue. College game is not the NBA game. Success at one level rarely equates to success at the next level in basketball.

Redick is not a crappy pro. Averaging 12pts in 25 minutes. He has stuck in the league. There is some truth to your last sentence but your statement about Redick is incorrect.

Guys...he's right.

Fab is a terrible passer...
Fab is awful in transition...
Fab needs to work on his footwork...
Fab needs to learn how to play in the low post...

In other words...Fab needs to stay in school for another two years (at least) ;)

JJ Redick has a 3pt% of nearly 40% for his career averaging 8PTS and 1.5 AST. He is hardly a crappy pro.

Short of Carmelo Anthony...no one SU has put into the league has been as good as JJ. Take a look at Jonny, Donte and Wes Johnson's numbers.

In what era? Because I'm taking Seikaly, Addison, and Schayes over Redick. Dave Bing, too.

This guy has clearly never seen Fab take that 15 footer.

Outside shot: Career 44.4 percent free throw shooter with no business having the ball in his hands outside of the paint.

He says most of his points come cleaning up in the paint... This guy doesn't watch Cuse basketball.

Uses a turn-around J to score over smaller defenders in the post.

I've never seen Kris take a turn around J.

I heard some guys named Douglas and Owens played a little NBA ball too. :)

That "Crappy Pro" re-signed last year with the Magic for $5M per year guaranteed. As afree agent last year,he was in demand and had other options. Please use someone else in your example.

I was talking about over the past decade. Sure, we can go back over the past 30 years and find some decent pros. Overall, I would say SU guys have dissapointed at the next level.

Hak's career stats are better than Redick's. But Redick has played for better teams. Probably a push. Etan maybe a push too he was a good rotation player in his prime. Also JJ's first couple years he was no better than Wes, so jury is still out on that one I think.

Wes Johnson is a +3.82 rating this season. Thats re-defining the term "bust".

The ones that have disappointed really should have stayed in school, except for Carmelo. Flynn, Greene, Wes would've all benefited, though no guarantee they'd be more successful in the NBA. The bottom line is this, the NBA is a pure talent league and the fact is that if they had enough talent they would all be faring better. Interestingly, that guys like Douglas and Seikaly, who were never projected of having stellar NBA careers, actually had solid ones...they also stayed in school all four years. DC stayed for all four years too and also had a solid NBA career.

To me, just more of a testament of how great a coach JB is. SU has been successful over the years due to him and his system, period. We typically have not gotten Mickie D (NBA) type guys over the years, but rather solid players who fit & develop in JB's system, generally maximizing their talents.

And redick avged 5 points, less then 1 rb, and less than 1 asst, in 11 minutes per game, in his first 2 years. Wes may be crappy but at least he is on the court.
