Yep. So Because of my job I had access to actual turnstile counts for a period of time a few years ago.

I would laugh because people here were always posting estimates of crowd sizes at that time and almost universally, they would overestimate by large percentages.

Actual turnstile counts of 26k, and people here would estimate 33-38k. These were mostly fb games…but same with hoops. If I didn’t see the numbers myself, I would have estimated more as well. It’s deceiving.

If you put 15k actual fannies in the seats the dome, people would swear there was 20-23k. It’s even worse now because the same filled “visual space” is actually fewer people than it used to be.

The only poster that consistently was echoing what I was seeing was “unknownorange”? Who I assumed works/worked at the dome or somehow had access to the counts as well. (Sorry if I outed you). Because he/she was spot on.

I was at the Louisville game earlier this season and the crowd was similar in size to what I saw tonight. Maybe a few hundred more.

Attendance this year is gergian.

I looked at the clock above the basket during warmups and with about 8 minutes before tipoff it seriously looked like 500 people were there. Two of them were JW and Severud. Can’t imagine what they were thinking.

I have no criticism after a win, as there have not been enough of them this year and they need to be enjoyed. I will say that it was good to see the team not totally collapse and give up a sizeable lead when the other team made a run.

Autry should get his butt kicked up and down all offseason from the fanbase and everyone. They did not get better all year and that's not excusable.

However, Letting go of coaches after a 2nd year is just shortsighted regardless if he is a continuity hire or not. Too many people talking about not even giving Autry 3 Strikes.

People need to look no further than Keates running the table in the ACCT and to the final 4 (that's not us btw and not saying that will ever happen).

Point is that coaches hit a homerun some years and strike out other years. If you looked at that nc state roster and that coach on the court last night you would say this coach will never make the tourney ever, yet he was laughing to the bank all offseason having taken down Duke twice and UNC over 2 weeks in Mid March on his way to a Final 4 while going 0-3 to them in Feb.

Did Keate's all the sudden become a better coach in the span of 2 weeks in Early March this time last year? Nope his players realized they were more talented than they were playing and started talking, simple as that.
Our fanbase is so accustomed to thinking we just deserve to be in the tourney every year just because we always were there and that our players will always be better basketball players even with the whole sport has flipped upside down the last 5 years with the SEC, portal and NIL. I know people will bend my words and say oh this will be Dino all over again, 1 good season every 5 years, I'm not saying that either. Autry has one more offseason to improve almost everything with this program.

For me Autry can have his 3rd strike and if the product still stinks then he's out. If he makes the tourney then his seat is still hot and should be hot every year until he shows he's got the chops to be the Head Coach of the Orange.

Like everybody else they need NIL to play with the big guys. Can't develop players any longer, need to hit big in the portal and the bidding for good players is 10 years alary for a lot of people.

I think this is the most reasonable sensible take out there right now.

Do I necessarily think that Autry is the coach for Syracuse? Absolutely not. But you can not fire the coach after two seasons. The optics of that look absolutely horrible and trying to get a coach to come into that situation would be extremely tough.

Autry has this offseason to prove to ADJW why he deserves to be the coach. If Autry can not make the NCAA tournament next season he will be promptly fired as he should be.

Hope it works for Autry, I have little confidence it does, but I hope for Syracuse and my fandom that it does.

lol the portal pieces, except Eddie ( and yes, identifying and offering those is part of coaching) are just not ACC level players - so that's 3 starters right now who simply do not belong on a p4 roster

The difference with Keats is that he has proven results. We have a guy with no HC experience and no track record of success that finally pushed a teetering program into the abyss. Context is important.

Timing is everything.
Getting all these emails for me to renew my football and basketball season tickets this week for a chance at a prize - after reading all these negative articles about the bball team this week (team was left with its pants down on how to use and the importance of NIL, horrible talent evaluation, most players underperforming expectations)
Frankly they made me want to laugh out loud.
They did not make me want to grab my checkbook.
I will renew before the deadline but all these emails are not going to move the needle.

And I don't even want any of those prizes frankly.
I dont like lacrosse.
I dont want courtside tickets to the UVA game.

Hard disagree on this one. I think you can easily tell the story of the continuity hire gone wrong, I would also say that coaches who have made it to D1 level dont think they're going to fail so i dont think "how long will i get if i struggle early" is a question that enters their mind, especially when going to a school who's last 2 major coaches (prior to fran and red) got nearly 50 years and 8 years.

That being said, if you have another terrible season and you have further fan and donator attrition then i think you have a very difficult product to sell to a coach.

I doubt it. Coaches are mercenaries also. Coaches talk, but coaches like getting big pay days and opportunities.

Meanwhile, my concern is that give him Year 3 becomes give him Year 4 (like G-Rob). But at least G-Rob improved from Year 1 to Year 2. When we went backwards in Year 3, that should have been the end.

Red's scenario is different in that Year 2 was worse than Year 1. So Year 3 can be an improvement over Year 2, even though it is not even as good as Year 1 (which was already not the season that anyone wanted). If we win 20 games in Year 1... 14 games in Year 2 (possible, right?)... and go 18-14 next year... it would be easy for the admin to say he is still over .500 after 3 years AND improved 22% or 29% or whatever from Year 2 to Year 3. Meanwhile, we are still out of the Big Dance and nowhere close to respectability.

And let's say they fire him after being 18-14 in Year 3 and bring in Coach Y. Coach Y now has to win 19 games to show improvement in 2026-2027. If he took the job next year, he would only have to win 15 games to show improvement. In a world where the rosters rotate every year massively, no reason why it is better to take over an 18-win team vs a 14-win team. If the freshmen next year are the difference between 18 wins and 14 wins... and are leaving anyway... so be it.

I almost think that the key issue is whether Freeman comes back. If he goes to the NBA, so be it... who knows. But if he transfers, then I think that is a referendum on Red and what to expect. Forget what some coach says after stomping us about Red's coaching ability... the perception amongst players/agents is that Syracuse is not well coached and/or not well funded. If Freeman comes back, then fans should absolutely see that as a sign for hope in Red and the program generally.
