We always complain about how we schedule teams in the preseason who should be strong...beat them...and then that team goes on to tank in the year, taking value away from the victory.

Well it would appear that our road win at NC State (who now sits at 7-3 in conference) is actually looking pretty good thus far.

They have a tough stretch coming up against Duke, FSU and UNC. It would be nice to see them win 2 of those 3 games. It would be especially pleasing to see them beat UNC. I wonder how far Gottleib would move UNC up the rankings if that happen. Maybe he might actually consider moving SU ahead of UNC.

NC State's record is a little deceptive right now. They have exactly zero quality wins and have several bad losses (a home blowout loss to Georgia Tech among them). They are likely an NIT team this year.

who have they beaten? They need a scalp or two from Duke/UNC to make that win look like a high quality one.

NC State is 18-7 already. Say they go 3-3 the rest of the way, then win 2 in the ACC Tourney. 23-11 in the ACC is likely to get them into the NCAA. 23-11 might get them into the NIT if they were in the MAC I'll grant you.

Who have they beaten in the ACC? Their ACC wins have come against MD (terrible), Wake twice (terrible), Boston College twice (terrible), Georgia Tech (terrible), and Miami (decent). They've lost to every single good team that they've played against. They aren't tourney bound by any means unless they knock off UNC or Duke in these next two weeks, and that is unlikely.

Going one step further, the ACC teams that State has been able to beat have a combined 16-31 record in the ACC. State isn't a tourney team unless something changes dramatically over the next week or two, or unless they win the ACC Tournament.

So they are pretty much Va Tech...

Regardless of what you say, if NC State ends up in 4th place in the ACC with 22 or 23 wins they will make it into the tourney. You sound like the Asian-American kid with the 4.0 GPA and 2400 SATs who plays violin in the local Symphony but gets turned down by Yale while a 3.9 kid with 2280 SATs gets accepted. Sometimes it is about more than just the stats.

Not for the NCAA selection committee. Zero quality wins and several bad losses won't get you into the NCAAT. Just ask Va Tech.

Was wondering how far into this thread Id get before VTech was referenced. They are a prime example of team record not meaning for an NCAA bid, its all about quality wins and bad losses. Hell, see SU's 07 season as another example.
