What is a contact?
A contact occurs any time a college coach says more than hello during a face-to-face contact with a college-bound student-athlete or his or her parents off the college’s campus.

What is a contact period?
During a contact period a college coach may have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, watch student-athletes compete and visit their high schools, and write or telephone student-athletes or their parents.

What is an evaluation period?
During an evaluation period a college coach may watch college-bound student-athletes compete, visit their high schools, and write or telephone student-athletes or their parents. However, a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents off the college’s campus during an evaluation period.

What is a quiet period?
During a quiet period, a college coach may only have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents on the college’s campus. A coach may not watch student-athletes compete (unless a competition occurs on the college’s campus) or visit their high schools. Coaches may write or telephone college-bound student-athletes or their parents during this time.

What is a dead period?
During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.

What is the difference between an official visit and an unofficial visit?
Any visit to a college campus by a college-bound student-athlete or his or her parents paid for by the college is an official visit. Visits paid for by college-bound student-athletes or their parents are unofficial visits.

During an official visit the college can pay for transportation to and from the college for the prospect, lodging and three meals per day for both the prospect and the parent or guardian, as well as reasonable entertainment expenses including three tickets to a home sports event.

The only expenses a college-bound student-athlete may receive from a college during an unofficial visit are three tickets to a home sports event.
Boy would this be a handy pin for BB recruiting. ;)

Pretty telling statement... Not sure about throwing good academic standing in there...

Regardless, hooray for early signing!

It was posted that he said in the teleconference if a kid signs early but doesn't qualify don't get the scholarship back. That seems odd as kids have signed their LOI in Feb but if they don't make it still have the scholarship.

It might mean that they will continue to monitor a commit that's on the fringe of not qualifying and wait until the February signing period. If a player continues to show signs that they won't qualify, Babers has until the second signing period to find a replacement. If they player signs in December, then doesn't qualify in June then the staff lost that scholarship which they could have used to target a player before the Feb. signing period.
Just a thought.

After reading through this I think that is exactly it. Except this says the kid has until the beginning of Fall classes to qualify or enroll in a JUCO.

i didn't know the date, I just said June cause that's when kids usually graduate. I realize there's additional summer classes as a last attempt to qualify.
Maybe it just means that if they sign in December and enroll in January and are academically ineligible then, the scholarship is locked up.

the school doesnt lose a scholie when i kid signs. you can sign 50 but only enroll 25 in any year.. the issue is they cant fill the spot until they know for sure he isnt coming since its binding if he does qualify.

Recruits only enroll in January if they are ahead in their schooling and are able to graduate early. A fringe qualifying kid would have no shot at enrolling early.

yes that makes perfect sense

Just a reminder that in one month early signing starts.

NCAA recruiting rules for college football

With the new recruiting rules now in tact that includes an early signing period there is some confusion for many recruiting fanatics.

Schools used to be able to take more than 25 signees in a class with the loophole being they could count early enrollees to the previous signing class.

According to a college coach we spoke to, that loophole is no longer in effect meaning there is a hard cap at no more than 25 signees in each given class, provided a school can sign that many prospects and not go over the NCAA mandated 85-person scholarship limit.

Under the old rule, LSU would be able to sign 27 players in the 2018 class. However, 25 is the number that Ed Orgeron and his staff must juggle.

Some ask what happens when attrition strikes and schools fall under that 85-limit?

That is when coaches have to get some added bonues found in the transfer market. Transfers count only against the 85-limit, so they do not affect signing class numbers.

Recruiting periods and dates

Something else that fans have to keep up with is the numerous recruiting periods set by the NCAA. They constantly go from one period to the other throughout the recruiting calendar and must be strictly adhered to.

Recruiting is now in a contact period, which means college coaches can have one-on-one contact with a recruit and his family on or away from a college campus from Nov. 26 through Dec. 16.

On Dec. 17, a quiet period kicks in and in-person contact is allowed only on the college campus.

The following day is the start of a dead period and it is the most stringent of all as no in-person contact can take place on or off a college campus.

Just as it is with a quiet period, coaches can send letters, emails, text messages, direct messages through social media, and call prospective recruits. That runs from Dec. 18 through Jan. 11.

During the dead period, recruits can visit the college campus but cannot have any in-person contact with a coach.

Coinciding with the dead period is the first-ever early signing period for football that runs from Dec. 20-22.

On Jan. 12, the contact period is back in play and runs all the way to Feb. 4, which is the final weekend for recruits to take official visits before National Signing Day.

Once again, a quiet period is in effect on Feb. 4 and the final dead period before signing day starts on Feb. 5 and lasts until Feb. 8 – the day after National Signing Day.

NCAA rule on in-home visits

Another NCAA rule that coaches must deal with is one that has been around for several years – number of in-home visits allowed during a contact period.

A school can make a total of six in-home visits during the contact periods to a prospective recruit. Only one visit can take place in a calendar week or partial calendar week that includes Sunday through Saturday.

Each head coach is allowed to make only one in-home visit per prospect, but he can be accompanied by assistant coaches.

Assistant coaches have more leeway and can use the remaining visits.

The coaches can visit with the recruit at school then go into the home or some other venue on the same day and it counts as only one visit.

Just an fyi. The Dead period, no face to face contact on or off campus, starts on Monday 12/18/17. This will be that last weekend for Official Visits until 1/12/18.
