You need 3 more bowls for the semifinals and championship game

And tell me, which conference is going to volunteer to give up a few million dollars for a spot in a big bowl, so that they have a nice draw at the gate in Notre Dame, who doesn't play in their league ? When the Big East has 12 football teams and say, four bowls, how eager are they going to be to give the best one away to Notre Dame, who isn't really a member of their league ? Especially if there is no longer AQ status for the Big East, and they do away with it.

The Bowls are corporate entities. The conferences aren't going to divy them up, per se, they are just going to be legally responsible for the relationship between the bowls and the conference teams, rather than the NCAA. The bowls, just like they do now, will court the leagues. I think you are misinterpreting what the NCAA is saying.

Bingo. This is about oversight. It would be managed just like the BCS, which is overseen by 11 conference commissioners and the AD of Notre Dame.

I guess, but is the NCAA basketball tournament any worse for it ?

4 regions - 4 games each in the first round. Based roughly on last year's final rankings. East Region is like the West in hoops, and has to have teams moved to populate it. this may be one round too many, but the idea sure looks fun.

East Region
(1) Alabama v. (8) Penn State
(2) South Carolina v. (7) Cincinnati
(3) Michigan v. (6) Va Tech
(4) Kansas State v. (5) West Virginia

South Region
(1) LSU v. (8) Rutgers
(2) Arkansas v. (7) Auburn
(3) Baylor v. (6) Florida State
(4) TCU v. (5) Georgia

Midwest Region
(1) Oklahoma State v. (8) Texas
(2) Boise State v. (7) BYU
(3) Wisconsin v. (6) Nebraska
(4) Michigan State v. (5) Houston

West Region
(1) Oregon v. (8) Northern Illinois
(2) USC v. (7) Missouri
(3) Stanford v. (6) Clemson
(4) Oklahoma v. (5) Southern Miss

Rutgers? Clemson? BYU? Nebraska? Cincy? No. This is just overkill.
D1 college basketball has 350 or so teams -- three times as many teams as D1 Football.

I won't even get into the logistics of a 32 team "playoff" for football. It's not necessary. By the end of the regular season, it's pretty easy to pick the Top 8 - 10 teams in the country. Throw in the other conference winners and you have 16 teams. Anything more than that is too much.

Do you want Syracuse to ever make it ? If so, we need at least 16 teams.

16 Teams is ideal. I said all conferences winners and a few at large. Do you expect SU to never win the conference?

There very likely isn't going to be an automatic qualifier in a couple years. Have you not been reading the news ?

I read, I just don't like.

As long as their are at least two conferences that want Notre Dame to join, they will always be able to work out some deal with a conference to maintain access to desirable bowls. The only thing that will ever truly put them "on the clock" is if either the ACC or Big Ten give up on adding them and move to 16 without Notre Dame; that would kill their leverage and force them to join the other conference.

That said, it would be a strategically horrible decision for Notre Dame to wait that long to join a conference - they should join while they still have multiple options so they can get the best possible deal from their new conference. As much as everyone bitches and moans about Notre Dame, their business acumen is outstanding (it's why they've gotten such a sweet deal from the Big East, they know what they're doing)...I suspect they are keeping really close tabs on what's going on and will join a conference before they are "forced" to do so.
