NCAA Tournament Selection Discussion - Bubble Talk, ACC Teams, #1 Seeds, whatever you want to say

I think by noon Saturday, there is typically zero or just 1 team playing that would even be considered as a bubble team (there are bid stealers though). I don't think they are too lazy in terms of who gets in.

But for Sunday games, they are pretty much ignored from a seeding perspective. And they probably hope there are no bid stealers because they are often indeed lazy at the end.

A few years ago I saw someone post a clip of a selection show from the late 80s where there was still a game going on that had tournament implications as they were announcing the field. It was something like well if this team wins they’ll be the 11 in this region. I gotta see if I can find it

In 1989 there were like four or 5 conf tournament finals going on as they announced the field! Including the SWAC; whoever won that game would be the 15. I still think there may be another one

I found it! In 1987 Washington was playing ucla in the pac 10 tournament final. The 12 seed in a region was announced as Washington if they won or Houston if they lost. Can you imagine???

I think it’s crazy Miami OH is ranked but could be out if they lose in conference tournament.

They are ranked right now!!

If you don’t think they are good enough to play in March w one loss, then don’t rank them.

Ridiculous.

hate bubble GIF

TBF, you're talking about two (or more) totally different groups.

I think Miami (OH) is in no matter what. There is no way that they can keep a team out that finished the regular season undefeated, no matter who they played. If you want to put them in Dayton for the play in games if they lose once, then sure. But they have to be in no matter what. I'd like nothing more than seeing them beat 16 loss Auburn.

I also think Santa Clara is a lock as well after their huge win vs. St. Mary's last night.

They tend to burn mid majors … low majors on the bubble are so rare. But it is a thin P5 bubble in terms of teams pushing upwards so that should help them.

I think Santa Clara should be fine.

With Miami I just don’t know — it’s totally unique team. I think much of our their fate will come down to committee dynamics .. committees always have a few more louder people.. and there are those that are sometimes convincing even if their views are no better than others. It could come down to that.

There's a lot of talk that they tried to play better teams but nobody would play them. If so, I think they deserve to be in. If it's just talk, I wouldn't be mad if they were left out.

They are still in 114 of 123 brackets today per the matrix (a little surprising at first), but the teams below them are not overly impressive.

I'm not digging deep into things this year, but its more likely than not they get in if
a) If they beat Syracuse today
b) There is 1 or less bubble busters.
Would beating Louisville on Wednesday lock it up for SMU

If they lost in Conference title game to #2 seed Akron IMO the Redhawks would be fine. If Miami, OH lost before that it gives the corrupt committee an out.

Crushing losses for Stanford and Virginia Tech. The committee would have to make a highly non-consensus decision to let them in.

They were the consensus first and second team out entering yesterday (28% in and 13% in), but those numbers are going to nosedive.

SMU already locked. Even if they had lost to Syracuse, they are likely in.

Before yesterday, SMU was not locked in with a loss to Syracuse. But yesterday was a good day for them.
- SMU was helped significantly by two chasers, Stanford and Virginia Tech losing yesterday.
- And they avoided a loss, and got a modest Q2 win.

SMU really doesn't need to worry much about the P5 at-larges below the line right now -- it's a weak field. But I'm not ready to call them a lock yet, because they are still susceptible to bubble busters... as per my post above there are potentially 3 bubble busters this year, And if their is 3 (Miami, A-10, MWC) SMU might be left out.

But they should feel good.

Here was the consensus entering today per the matrix (Only considered 56 updates made today). So a fairly clear consenus was in place as of now

Santa Clara - 55 (out of 56)
SMU - 54
VCU - 53
Indiana - 40
--------- in/out---------
Auburn - 8
New Mexico - 4
Cal - 3
Cincy - 1
Oklahoma - 1
San Diego St - 1
Stanford - 0
Virginia Tech - 0

Not a great day for those in the "not certain" as of now group. If you are an SMU fan even with a loss to Louisville you probably feel content. There only real risk is probably bubble busters, not the teams below the line right now.

- Indiana who was the last in, lost to 15-18 Northwestern... so they are certainly concerned.

In terms of teams below the line.
- Auburn, first team out per matrix, did what they had to do beating a not so good Miss St team. Tomorrow is when they get the resume boost if they beat Tennessee. They are now 17-15, 4-12 in Q1 (2 elite wins in those 4) and 1 bad loss. Meh, I don't know about them, consensus likes them more than me.

- Cal had moved back into "mild" consideration before today. And Florida St crushes the hopes of another ACC team.

- Cincy blows a Q1 win chance against UCF

Florida St , out of nowhere is developing a decent resume. It not good enough as of now.. 3-7 in Q1, 6-6 in Q2, one bad loss. But beat Duke tomorrow and all of a sudden things look different very quickly..
