NET and KenPom Tracker 23-24 (SU = 84 3/9/24)

And this is the insanity of NET in a nutshell
Fortunately, in the tournament you still have to actually win the game to advance. Not a well you won you first round game, but based on our algorithm, you were the 33rd best team in the round of 64, so good luck next year.

It's stupid on the women's side too

SU is 39

Behind three Big Ten teams that are trash compared to SU

Yeah that is a flawed metric considering that NET translates to a 10 seed for the current 2nd place team in the ACC.

Take a break from pointing out the weaknesses of the NET.

According to today's bracket matrix, half of these unnamed teams are in the tournament. You are on the committee. Which teams do you think deserve to be in based on their resume?

It's very stupid to group 300 teams into four buckets and use it as a model input

Computers are pretty good these days.

Worrying about the difference between the lowest q1 and the highest q2 as if there is a meaningful difference shows how stupid the process is

Boeheim was right. All these teams are the same, they used dumb formulas, just add one more game and it takes away a lot of the stupidity

I think Road wins / losses over a top 30 team should be Quad 0...

I would also argue home games over 250+ in the Net should not even count or put them in Q5 and delete them. For Cuse it would be only Canisius.

NC State is 4 spots higher in the Net. Same with Wake and they are 27 in the Net. Look at this NonCon Q4 Below.

I have to choose half of these teams? I know my top 4-5 at first glance.

The only reason for quadrants is so they can tell whatever story they need to justify whoever gets in

It's story telling after the fact for quick and dirty analysis not for calculating anything

very true. Beating UNC is going to mean more to the committee than anything else we do all season. Doesn’t matter what Net or what metrics anyone else is looking at. Oh you beat UNC you’re moving up. Luck for us.

IIRC RPI didn't take into account margin of victory. The way some teams tried to game that system was playing horrid teams on the road.
Correct, road wins were worth more than home wins. It was also better to lose to a school with a good RPI than beat a school with a bad RPI.

What’s our current combined Q1 and Q2 record?

CBS podcast was saying wake forest was 6-9 in first two quadrants and St. John’s was 8-11. Just curious where we stand compared to those two

Edit: 5-8. Didn’t realize the rankings list grouped it for you.

Are quadrants actually used in the formula or are they just to dumb it down for taking heads?

I hope that oncologists don't use quadrants. You have between a 0 and 25% chance of this horrible cancer, sir

Yup. Our strength of schedule and RPI put us in. Just bonkers. Axe is interviewing Stevens today on his pod and he’s going to go in depth on it all with him.
Who is Stevens?
