I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 10 of our 29 misses = 34.5%
They rebounded 16 of their 43 misses = 37.2%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 12 points on 10 O-Rebs = 1.200 points/O-reb
They got 12 points on 16 O-Rebs = 0.750 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 15 turnovers – 9 steals = 6 unforced
They had 13 turnovers – 8 steals = 5 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 15 points from 13 takeaways = 1.154 points/takeaway
They had 12 points from 15 takeaways = 0.800 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 27 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.174 points
They had 24 points in 31 unsettled situations = 0.774 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 37 + 13 = 50
They had 35 + 15= 50

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 41 on twos, (51.2%), 5 for 11 on threes (45.5%) and 24 for 29 on frees (82.8%)
They were 16 for 35 on twos, (45.7%), 10 for 34 on threes (29.4%) and 12 for 13 on frees (92.3%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 34 PIP, 23 POP, 15 TREY, 8 TZ, 15 POTO, 4 FBP
They had 26 PIP, 36 POP, 30 TREY, 6 TZ, 12 POTO, 6 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 4 FBP in 43 opportunities (9.3%)
They scored 6 FBP in 35 opportunities (17.1%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 41 FCP and 12 SCP
They had 44 FCP and 12 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 73 points and our bench scored 8 points
Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 29 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 13 of our 26 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 19 of their 26 field goals = 73.1%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 81 points in 71 possessions = 1.141 points/possession
They scored 74 points in 72 possessions = 1.028 points/ possession
It was a 143 possession game.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

17-10, 19-17, 16-22, 29-25

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 41 two point shots, scored 34 points in the paint, attempted 29 free throws and were fouled 24 times = 1.71; 1.42; 1.21
They attempted 35 two point shots, scored 26 points in the paint, attempted 13 free throws and were fouled 13 times = 2.69; 1.23; 1.00
We were more likely to draw a foul on two point shots and in the paint and got more free throws out of it.

Comments:

- This was the first time Oshae was the O-Dog and led in scoring efficiency. Tyus led in the first 7 times and the second 8 times, but never Oshae before tonight.

- This was the first time we lost the rebound battle, (the way I figure it) and failed to win “manufactured possessions”.

- We had 27 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.174 points. They had 24 points in 31 unsettled situations = 0.774 points. In a close game a better response to unsettled situations can make a significant difference.

- In the first 9 games the fact that we couldn’t make threes and couldn’t stop them was the team’s biggest problem. In the last two games we are 15 for 34 (44.1%) and the bad guys are 12 for 51 ((23.5%)

- This team is not as good an offensive team as last year’s but we are scoring 74.3ppg and we can make it tough for the other teams to reach 75. We were averaging 77.9 at this point last year. We are just 4 points short of that. And we’d lost 4 games by this point last year.
