I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +31NP in 32 minutes = +232NP in 302 minutes = +30.7NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +20NP in 31 minutes = +98NP in 301 minutes = +13.0NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +10NP in 37 minutes = +92NP in 319 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +14NP in 22 minutes = +69NP in 280 minutes = +9.9NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima +8NP in 8 minutes = +35NP in 77 minutes = +18.2NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak +8NP in 20 minutes = +20NP in 78 minutes = +10.3NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +7NP in 12 minutes = +55NP in 151 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season
Chris Bell +4NP in 22 minutes = +23NP in 204 minutes = +4.5NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor -2NP in 16 minutes = +45NP in 172 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Maliq Brown 0NP in 0 minutes = +44NP in 66 minutes = +26.7NP/40 for season
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +7NP in 59 minutes = +4.7NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 16 points and 10 assists = 26

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 20 points – 4mfg – 0mft = +16

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 20 points of 28 = 71.4%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Joe Girard 37 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 11 of our 30 misses = 36.7%
They rebounded 15 of their 39 misses = 38.5%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 39 points in 26 unsettled situations = 1.500 points/situation
They had 29 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.208 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 35 + 15 = 50
They had 34 + 9 = 43

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 27 for 46 on twos, (58.7%), 3 for 14 on threes (21.4%) and 20 for 21 on frees (95.2%)
They were 16 for 34 on twos, (47.1%), 6 for 25 on threes (24.0%) and 14 for 16 on frees (87.5%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 46 PIP, 20 POP, 9 OL, 8 TZ, 20FT
They had 22 PIP, 14 POP, 18 OL, 10 TZ, 14 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 14 FBP in 42 opportunities (33.3%)
They scored 6 FBP in 25 opportunities (24.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 34 FCP and 15 SCP
They had 24 FCP and 20 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 72 points and our bench scored 11 points.
Their starters scored 62 points and their bench scored 2 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 20 of our 30 field goals = 66.7%
They assisted 12 of their 22 field goals = 54.5%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 83 points in 68 possessions = 1.221 points/ possession
They scored 64 points in 67 possessions = 0.955 points/possession
It was a 135-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 83 points in 70 possessions = 1.186 points/ possession
They scored 64 points in 67 possessions = 0.955 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 83 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +52
They scored 64 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +25

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 83 on 46 two-point attempts, 14 three-point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 95 of a possible 155 points = 53.5% of possible points scored.
They scored 64 on 34 two-point attempts, 25 three-point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 66 of a possible 159 points = 40.3% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 46 two-point shots and were fouled 19 times = 2.42
They attempted 34 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.27

Comments:

- My all-time NP/40 for a season is Derrick Coleman’s 28.5 in 1988-89. Jesse Edwards, through 10 games, is at 30.7. I don’t expect him to remain at that rate through the ACC schedule but It will be interesting how long he can continue to be above Coleman’s mark.

- 39 points in unsettled situations is a lot- we’ve only topped it once with 40 against Richmond.

- Against Illinois, we made 27.0% of our two-point shots. Since: 62.5%, 65.4% and 58.7%.

- Against Illinois, PIP, (points in the paint) were 18-26. Since then: 34-18. 58-38 and 46-22.

- The two teams made 34 of 37 free throws.

- We won “bench points for the second game in a row and the fourth time this season.

- We also won assist percentage for the second game in a row and the third time this season.

- It was close but it was the 9th consecutive game in which the ratio of two point attempts vs. fouls called on the other team favored the opposition. How did Jesse Edwards attempt 14 shots and never get to the line while Qudus Wahab attempted 8 shots and was 4/5 from the line.
