I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +16NP in 33 minutes = +143NP in 207 minutes = +27.6NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima +6NP in 4 minutes = +29NP in 61 minutes = +19.0NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +6NP in 23 minutes = +34NP in 101 minutes = +13.5NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +1NP in 4 minutes = +24NP in 50 minutes = +19.2NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak +1NP in 9 minutes = +8NP in 40 minutes = +8.0NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +1NP in 30 minutes = +37NP in 210 minutes = +7.0NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland 0NP in 3 minutes = +7NP in 48 minutes = +5.8NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence 0NP in 13 minutes = +31NP in 123 minutes = +10.1NP/40 for season
Joe Girard -2NP in 20 minutes = +48NP in 223 minutes = +8.6NP/40 for season
Chris Bell -2NP in 27 minutes = +18NP in 160 minutes = +4.5NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz -8NP in 34 minutes = +58NP in 211 minutes = +11.0NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 9 points and 5 assists = 14

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Mounir Hima 4 points – 0mfg – 0mft = +4

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Benny Williams 8 points of 18 = 44.4%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Judah Mintz 34 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 12 of our 41 misses = 29.3%
They rebounded 17 of their 47 misses = 36.1%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 13 points in 19 unsettled situations = 0.684 points/situation
They had 22 points in 34 unsettled situations = 0.647 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 42 + 7 = 49
They had 46 + 17 = 63

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 10 for 37 on twos, (27.0%), 5 for 17 on threes (29.4%) and 9 for 17 on frees (52.9%)
They were 13 for 28 on twos, (46.4%), 11 for 39 on threes (28.2%) and 14 for 22 on frees (63.6%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 18 PIP, 15 POP, 15 OL, 2 TZ, 9 FT
They had 26 PIP, 33 POP, 33 OL, 0 TZ, 14 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 5 FBP in 38 opportunities (13.2%)
They scored 5 FBP in 42 opportunities (11.9%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 22 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 50 FCP and 4 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 38 points and our bench scored 34 points.
Their starters scored 54 points and their bench scored 19 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 11 of our 15 field goals = 73.3%
They assisted 21 of their 24 field goals = 87.5%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 44 points in 61 possessions = 0.721 points/ possession
They scored 73 points in 67 possessions = 1.090 points/possession
It was a 128-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 44 points in 71 possessions = 0.620 points/ possession
They scored 73 points in 77 possessions = 0.948 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 44 points, missed 39 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net -3
They scored 73 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +32

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 44 on 37 two-point attempts, 17 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 44 of a possible 142 points = 31.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 73 on 28 two-point attempts, 39 three-point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 73 of a possible 195 points = 37.4% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.47
They attempted 28 two-point shots and were fouled 22 times = 1.27

Comments:

- The “Net Points” tell it all: Edwards +16, Hima and Taylor +6, Ajak, Brown and Williams +1, Copeland and Torrence 0, Bell and Girard -2, Mintz -8. I don’t keep single game historical records but -8NP might be one.

- By NP per 40, this is our beat line up: Edwards at Center, Brown at PF, Taylor at SF, Mintz at the 2, Torrence at the point. I’d like to see us try that.

- Another first: Our ODOG had negative net points. Judah Mintz tied for the lead in scoring with 9 points and added 5 assists, (I think I remember one of them) but offset it 13 missed field goals, 3 missed free throws, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls. He had 2 rebounds and no steals or blocks.

- Yup, Mounir Hima, our back-up center, was our most efficient shooter. He dunked in two shots for 4 points in 4 minutes. +4. Nobody topped that.

- And to top it all off, our most efficient scorer was Benny Williams, who scored 44% of the points he would have scored if all his shots had gone in.

- Judah Mintz, the guy who played the worst, played the most minutes.

- You can win games where you hit 29% of your three-pointers. You can win games where you hit 53% of your free throws. If you hit 27% of your two points shots, you are going to be) for everything.

- You also aren’t going to win when you get out scored 22-50 in initial sets, (First Chance Points) or our starters get out-scored 38-62, (as they were by Bryant) or 34-54 (by Illinois).

- For those who think assist ratio is a measure of a well-functioning offense: We assisted on 73% of our baskets and the Illini 87.5% the highest ratios for us or our opposition. Was that a good offensive games that you watched last night? The scorers are looking for shooters who don’t have to move once they get the pass. Outside shooters. But it’s harder to be consistent out these. But when you score, the guy who gets the pass gets an assist. Most games are won in the paint.

- The trend continues: For the sixth straight game, the ratio of our two point attempts to drawing fouls is greater that our opposition’s and by significant margins. Over that stretch we’ve attempted 252 two point shots and drawn 89 fouls, (2.83) while the other guys have attempted 187 two pointers and been fouled 94 times, (1.98). Put differently, if we got fouled at the same ratio they did, we’d have been fouled 127 times, 38 more than we did. That’s more than 5 a game.
