I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Joe Girard +14NP in 37 minutes = +251NP in 720 minutes = +13.9NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +8NP in 20 minutes = +167NP in 308 minutes = +21.7NP/40 for season

Chris Bell 18 points – 3mfg – 0mft = +15
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)

Joe Girard 37 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 5 of our 29 misses = 17.1%
They rebounded 6 of their 36 misses = 16.6%
Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 18 points in 14 unsettled situations = 1.286 points/situation
They had 23 points in 19 unsettled situations = 1.240 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 35 + 10 = 45
They had 30 + 17 = 47
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 39 on twos, (53.8%), 8 for 18 on threes (44.4%) and 2 for 3 on frees (66.7%)
They were 20 for 42 on twos, (47.6%), 6 for 16 on threes (37.5%) and 14 for 23 on frees (60.9%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 38 PIP, 28 POP, 24 OL, 6 TZ, 2 FT
They had 34 PIP, 24 POP, 18 OL, 4 TZ, 14 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 10 FBP in 41 opportunities (24.4%)
They scored 7 FBP in 36 opportunities (19.4%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 52 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 49 FCP and 2 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 62 points and our bench scored 6 points.
Their starters scored 67 points and their bench scored 5 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 17 of our 29 field goals = 58.6%
They assisted 20 of their 26 field goals = 76.9%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 68 points in 70 possessions = 0.971 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 65 possessions = 1.108 points/possession
It was a 135-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 68 points in 58 possessions = 1.043 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 69 possessions = 1.013 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 68 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 1 free throw = net +40
They scored 72 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 9 free throws = net +31
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 68 on 38 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 3 free throw attempts = 68 of a possible 144 points = 55.6% of possible points scored.
They scored 72 on 42 two-point attempts, 16 three-point attempts and 23 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 153 points = 41.2% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 38 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 3.55
They attempted 42 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 2.47
Comments:
- Chris Bell led the team in NP for the first time this year and improved his season average by over a point, (7.4-8.5), which is hard to do at this point of the season.
- There wasn’t much offensive rebounding in this game, (11 of 65 misses). I think the teams wanted to get back on defense to defend against the fast break. I think it hurt Maliq Brown’s game as he only got off 2 shots in 20 minutes.
- Yes, we out-rebounded the mighty Tar Heels 35-30. But we were -7 in turnovers. We usually negate rebounding deficits with turnover surpluses. This time UNC did that to us.
- We missed 18 two point shots, on none of which we were fouled. Benny's miss was an 'and one' 38 seconds into the second half. Judah made two free throws with 5:36 left, so 18 of our 19 misses were not fouled.
- That 3.55 between 3 point attempts and fouls was our largest in 12 games. Carolina’s 2.47 was normal. For the season SU and the opposition have attempted 1,588 two point shots and been fouled 640 times, (2.48).
