Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 8 of our 29 misses = 27.6%
They rebounded 21 of their 40 misses = 52.5%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 10 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.250 points/O-reb
They got 16 points on 21 O-Rebs = 0.762 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 14 turnovers – 7 steals = 7 unforced
They had 13 turnovers – 6 steals = 7 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 7 points from 13 takeaways = 0.538 points/takeaway
They had 15 points from 14 takeaways = 1.071 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 17 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.773 points
They had 31 points in 34 unsettled situations = 0.912 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 27 + 13 = 40
They had 42 + 14= 56

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 10 for 28 on twos, (35.7%), 8 for 18 on threes (44.4%) and 5 for 6 on frees (83.3%)
They were 12 for 35 on twos, (34.3%), 5 for 21 on threes (23.8%) and 12 for 16 on frees (75.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 18 PIP, 15 POP, 15 TREY, 2 TZ, 7 POTO, 6 FBP
They had 24 PIP, 26 POP, 24 TREY, 0 TZ, 15 POTO, 8 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 6 FBP in 32 opportunities (18.75%)
They scored 8 FBP in 29 opportunities (27.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 28 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 15 FCP and 16 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 43 points and our bench scored 6 points
Their starters scored 40 points and their bench scored 11 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 9 of our 18 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 9 of their 17 field goals = 52.9%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 49 points in 55 possessions = 0.891 points/ possession
They scored 51 points in 56 possessions = 0.911 points/possession
It was a 111 possession game (We are averaging 133 a game)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

10-3, 18-16, 10-14, 11-18

Fouls

(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 28 two point shots, scored 18 points in the paint, attempted 16 free throws and were fouled 9 times = 3.11; 2.00; 0.67
They attempted 35 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 16 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 2.33; 1.60; 1.07

Theye were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots or scoring in the paint and e got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- The egregious error on our last possession was made by the guy who was easily our best player in the game. It’s almost like the old saying that God never gives you something you can’t handle. Maybe Tyus was the guy who could best deal with this because he was our best player. A lesser player might have ahd an even ahrder time with it.

- That said, aren’t we better off running our offense for a last shot and getting the ball to one of the big three than isolating and having our best player esstnially go 1 on 5?

- We out-shot them at every level but had 7 fewer two point shots, 3 fewer 3 point shots and 10 fewer free throw attempts.

- Which was because we got killed on the boards, 27-42. If you have the ball all the time, you can overcome your mistakes. If you have it rarely, every mistake is going to matter. Our 14 turnovers meant much more than their 13.

- Notre Dame had 15 points in their initial sets, (first chance points) – and won!
