I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 15 of our 33 misses = 45.5%
They rebounded 14 of their 53 misses = 26.4%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 15 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.00 points
They got 4 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.29 points

Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 8 steals = 2 unforced
They had 10 turnovers – 5 steals = 5 unforced

Points from Takeaways
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 12 points from 10 turnovers = 1.20 points
They had 6 points from 10 turnovers = 0.60 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 54 + 10 = 64
They had 32 + 10 = 42

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 24 for 44 on twos, (.545), 13 of 24 on threes (.542) and 14 for 21 on frees (.667)
They were 14 for 43 on twos, (.326), 5 for 27 on threes (.185) and 16 for 22 on frees (.727)

We had 38 PIP, 49 POP, 39 TREY, 10 TZ, 18 FBP, 12 TOP
They had 22 PIP, 21 POP, 15 TREY, 6 TZ, 18 FBP, 6 TOP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 59 points and our bench scored 42 points
Their starters scored 25 points and their bench scored 34 points

We assisted 25 of our 37 field goals, 67.6%
They assisted 12 of their 19 field goals 63.2%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 101 points in 74 possessions = 1.365 points/possession
They scored 59 points in 75 possessions = 0.787 points/ possession
It was a 149 possession game

Breakdown by Quarters

They attempted 43 two point shots, scored 22 points in the paint, attempted 22 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.69, 1.375, 1.375

Comments:

- For the first time this season we had a really dominant rebounding game. The total was 54-32. They got 14 offensive rebounds to our 15 but that represented 26% of their misses while we got 45% of ours.

- And we did more with our offensive rebounds, getting 15 second chance points on 15 O-rebs to their 4 on 14. Often, when the other team rebounds their own shot they find it easier to score because the defense isn’t settled. But in this game, it didn’t matter.

- The same was true for turnovers. Each team had 10 but we got 12 points off of it to their 6.

- SCS had 8 steals to our 5, which seems strange until you see how our big men handled the ball. Again, you’re as tall as where the ball is.

- Both teams had 18 fast break points, which surprised me.

- We had more bench points 42-34 but their bench out-scored their starters, who totaled only 25 points. Our starters played 99 minutes to 105 for theirs but out-scored them 59-25.

- Jump shots produce assists, which is why we had 25 to 12 for them. We had 49 POP, (points outside the paint), to 21 for them.

- We had 10 points from the Twilight Zone, (between the paint and the arc. We now have 42, meaning 21 made jump shots form there in four games. It gives us an extra dimension, makes us harder to defend and keeps defenders moving, which opens up other opportunities. If you try to do all your scoring from the arc or at the hole, you are too easy to defend, like a football team that just runs up the middle or throws deep, (know any teams like that?).
