Jesse Edwards +4NP in 5 minutes = +32.0NP/40
Joe Girard +2NP in 22 minutes = +3.6NP/40
Jalen Carey +1NP in 18 minutes = +2.2NP/40
Buddy Boeheim +1NP in 32 minutes = +1.25NP/40
Bourama Sidibie -1NP in 22 minutes = -1.8NP/40

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Elijah Hughes 14 points + 1 assist = 15

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 2 points – 1 FGA – 0 FTA = 1

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Elijah Hughes 14 points of 43 = 32.5%

Sat Us Down
(Who scored the first SU basket of each half?)

1st Half- Bourama Sidibe lay-up at 18:32
2nd Half- Buddy Boeheim jumper at 17:20

TACO Bell MVP
(Who scored the point that got us to 70, which gets you free tacos with your ticket stub)
We could have made it 35 and no one would be listed here.

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Marek Dolezaj and Elijah Hughes 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 8 of our 42 misses = 19.0%
They rebounded 10 of their 29 misses = 34.5%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 9 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.125 points/O-reb
They got 6 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.600 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 9 turnovers – 4 steals = 5 unforced
They had 16 turnovers – 5 steals = 11 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 10 points from 16 takeaways = 0.625 points/takeaway
They had 4 points from 9 takeaways = 0.444 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.792 points
They had 10 points in 19 unsettled situations = 0.526 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 28 + 16 = 44
They had 47 + 9 = 56

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 28 + 5 + 3 = 36
They had 47 + 4 + 4 = 55

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 8 for 26 on twos, (30.8%), 5 for 29 on threes (17.2%) and 3 for 7 on frees (42.9%)
They were 16 for 24 on twos, (66.7%), 4 for 25 on threes (16.0%) and 4 for 6 on frees (66.7%)
Combined percentages were: 909 (308 + 172 + 429) vs. 1494 (667 + 160 + 667) = -149

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 16 PIP, 15 POP, 15 OL, 0 TZ, 10 POTO, 4 FBP
They had 26 PIP, 18 POP, 12 OL, 6 TZ, 5 POTO, 2 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 5 FBP in 16 opportunities (31.25%)
They scored 2 FBP in 18 opportunities (11.1%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 17 FCP and 9 SCP
They had 36 FCP and 6 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 29 points and our bench scored 5 points
Their starters scored 32 points and their bench scored 16 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 7 of our 13 field goals = 53.8%
They assisted 14 of their 20 field goals = 70.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 34 points in 59 possessions = 0.576 points/ possession
They scored 48 points in 58 possessions = 0.828 points/possession
It was a 117 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 34 points in 52 possessions = 0.654 points/ possession
They scored 48 points in 58 possessions = 0.828 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 34 points, missed 42 field goals and 4 missed free throws = net -12
They scored 48 points, missed 29 field goals and 2 missed free throws = net +17

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 34 on 26 two point attempts, 29 three point attempts and 7 free throw attempts = 34 of a possible 146 points = 23.4% of possible points scored.
They scored 48 on 24 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 6 free throw attempts = 48 of a possible 129 points = 37.2% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

2-10, 17-15, 8-12, 7-11

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 26 two point shots, attempted 7 free throws and were fouled 7 times = 3.71; 1.00
They attempted 12 two point shots, attempted 6 free throws and were fouled 12 times = 2.00; 1.00
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots. But we got more free throws out of our fouls, which suggests that more of the fouls we committed were possession fouls, rather than shooting fouls.

Comments

- This was SU’s lowest point total since Temple beat them 49-31 on February 21, 1945. Jim Boeheim was 4 months old.
- Our missed three pointers were glaring but they missed about the same amount, (24 vs. 21) and hit a lower percentage, (17%-16%). We lost the game inside, where we got out-scored 16-26.
- The Cavs out-scored us 0-6 in the “Twilight Zone” between the paint and the arc, a larger area of the court this year. Last year we usually won this stat.
- It always interests me that the more aggressive defensive team gets called for the fewer fouls. Part of it is that aggressive defenders get to where they need to be first. Part of it is that referees tend to call what seems excessive. If aggressive defense is the norm, they don’t call fouls for aggression. If passive defense is the norm, they do.

Thank you for doing this. Always interesting.

Note: Hughes played 40, not Buddy.
