I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.
I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
POSSESSION
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 12 of our 38 misses = 31.6%
They rebounded 8 of their 32 misses = 25.0%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 10 points on 12 O-Rebs = 0.83 points
They got 9 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.13 points
Turnovers
(Total turnovers – steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 7 turnovers – 3 steals = 4 unforced
They had 13 turnovers – 11 steals = 2 unforced
Points from Turnovers
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 15 points from 13 turnovers = 1.15 points
They had 2 points from 7 turnovers = 0.29 points
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 36 + 13 = 49
They had 34 + 7 = 41
SCORING
Shooting

We were 15 for 38 on twos, (.395), 6 of 19 on threes (.316) and 20 for25 on frees (.800)
They were 14 for32 on twos (.438), 8 for 21 on threes (.381) and 10 for 12 on frees (.833)

(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points)
We had 28 PIP, 20 POP, 18 TREY, 2 TZ, 10 FBP
They had 28 PIP, 24 POP, 24 TREY, 0 TZ, 10 FBP
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made, courtesy of Pat. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 28 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 33 FCP and 9 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 55 points and our bench scored 13 points
Their starters scored 42 points and their bench scored 20 points

We assisted 10 of our 21 field goals, 42.1%
They assisted 21 of their 22 field goals 95.5%
Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 68 points in 65 possessions = 1.05 points/possession
They scored 62 points in 64 possessions = 0.97 points/ possession
It was a 129 possession game
Breakdown by Quarters

We attempted 38 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 25 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.38, 1.75, 1.56
They attempted 32 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 12 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 2.13, 1.87, 0.80
Comments:
- Two freshmen, Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson, led the team in net points. Please don’t read this NBA!!!
- I’d wager we will win any game where we have 11 steals and 7 blocks.
- We crushed them in points off turnovers, 15-2. The points per turnover are even more revealing: 1.15 vs. 0.29. When we got the ball on a turnover, we scored. They didn’t.
- In the three prior games against the Hoos since we joined the ACC, we got out-rebounded 24.0% to 38.8%. . We turned that around to 31.6% to 25.0%.
- We were -25 in manufactured possessions in those 3 games and +8 in this one.
- Which allowed us to win despite being outshot, percentage-wise outside the arc, inside of it and from the line.
- Assists are the only stat that is an opinion. Virginia had 21 assists on 22 made baskets. 95.5%. Really? Really??
- Could we please get off to better starts? I know it was 8-2 at one point but that didn’t last long. We were 10-21 after 10 minutes vs. Gonzaga and 8-12 in this game. If we are going to beat North Carolina in what will be a fast paced game, we need 20+ points in the first ten minutes and at least 40 by halftime.
- We got 25 free throw attempts on 16 fouls. They got 12 on 15. All that driving to the basket, as awkward as it can look sometimes, pays off.
